Brief timeline of events:

- Immersion sue MS and Sony for not paying fees on rumble technology.

- MS settle with Immersion and continue releasing rumble pads

- Sony don't settle and instead release Sixaxis

- Sony realise their mistake, settle up with Immersion and create the Dualshock 3

- Microsoft cash in their bonus card and claim 20 million dollars from Immersion

Don't MS own some of Immersion now as well?

Bit stupid of them to take a bunch of money from MS under teh condition they don't share their tech with Sony and then turn around and sharing it with Sony. What do they expect MS to say?

"ooh, according to the document we signed you now owe us $15 million but what's 15 million amongst friends eh? Why don' we just say you owe us one."

Yeah, if it's that straight forward then it's a bit of an odd move from Immersion. I prefer to blame Microsoft for now, though, in lieu of actually knowing what's happened.

Well according to the article linked to:

Kotaku reports that part of Microsoft’s deal with the firm required that Immersion cough up $15 million in the event that Sony subsequently decided to jump on board with the rumble firm.

Hmm, presumably Immersion made more than $15m out of the Sony deal, then. ^_^

$80million, just over, is the figure that Immersion got from Sony IIRC. And MS own a significant chunk of Immersion too (But don't own them outright)

Someone on EG is saying it's actually $97m that Immersion got from Sony. I know it was a lot though.

Read on:

Immersion's agreement with Microsoft contained a clause requiring it to hand over a slice of any settlement with Sony -- a minimum of $15 million, plus percentages of any amount over $100 million. Immersion said the agreement with Sony did not trigger that clause, but Microsoft disagreed, and filed suit last year in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington.

So maybe they got more than $100m, hence the extra $5m+.

Basically, if the amount over $15m is still measured in millions, then it was a no-brainer for Immersion, surely? However, then not going on to pay MS the promised $15m+ would be a bit of a whoopsie, given that they surely expected some retribution after draggin MS et al through the procedures. Very odd way of conducting business, I'd have thought.
