Apparently spammers don't work on weekends either. I was almost worried that our resident french spammer had been banned.

I think there are laws in France to prevent people spamming at weekends or after 6pm on a weekday. :D

He's a persistent bugger, that one - I've been deleting his threads pretty much every day for the past couple of weeks. You make a good point though - I've never consider banning the user id (not sure I have that ability - I just occasionally delete the odd post and thread when they're obviously junk).

Yeah, turns out I can't do any per-user moderating, just threads and posts. Hairy, do you have any ability to ban the guy? Another two threads this morning... :/

At least he limits himself to post only two threads per day. :)

Typical- he's probably being specifically paid for two threads and no more.

Does anyone here ride a fixie/single speed bike?

I'm looking into buying a bike at the moment and those turn out to be the most affordable ones. Mostly interested in getting one for exercise purposes.

I don't own a fixie/single speed bike but I do ride quite a lot and I'd say if you're looking to use it for exercise then a good-quality but basic hybrid or touring road bike would be a better choice as you're far more likely to go on longer and more varied rides using that than a fixie or single speed bike. Having even just five gears is a world of difference from just one, although I think you'll struggle to buy a bike that has less than ten.

Hm, yes. I've been thinking about this a bit more as well. All the single speed bikes in the stores here have very slim and slick tires. They are also tend to have pretty flashy color schemes, which isn't exactly ideal in this town.

I remember being quite proud of the fact that my bike had five gears when I was around 10. Now 16 seems to be the minimum for most bikes with MTBs going up all the way to 30 gears. :)

Yeah,18-21 seem to be the most common. To be honest the I think they're overkill mostly - even riding around in the Peak District I've only used the very lowest gears on my bike a couple of times (that said, the times when I did use them I was very grateful for them :)).

Unless you're going to be riding off-road a lot I'd recommend not getting a mountain bike as they're heavier and usually come with suspension these days (which is great when you're going over a lot of bumps but is incredibly inefficient when you're riding on a road since every bump loses energy that you then have to put back in by pedalling).

Another tip would be to go to a (good) shop and get them to measure you up so you get the right size frame - having a frame to big or small can be an absolute killer when you're riding, causing all sorts of muscular problems. For several years I struggled with back pains from cycling, which I was able to almost completely cure by getting a proper sized bike (and setting it up properly).

Started replaying the original Command & Conquer and I noticed the water well explode like they're full of explosives in a Michael Bay movie...

Does anyone remember any similar strange situation on a AAA game?

Games used to be a lot happier to make basically anything explode, before everyone got all realistic and serious about it. :)

Regarding the bike, I got the Rockrider 5.0 and am really happy with it if that helps:

It's pretty reasonably priced and not a bad bike at all for the money (apparently)

Wow, bikes are comparatively cheap in the UK by the looks of it. The cheapest (new) one I can find here costs almost three times as much as the one you linked to.

PS: In fact even used bikes are generally more expensive than that one. :(

If somebody has the ability to ban users it would be great if they could do that with montreguess and bijouxpanda, both of which are pretty regularly posting 2-3 spam threads every day. That's not a big number, I know, but they've been at it for a couple of weeks now and I'm sure folks would prefer to not have to deal with them every morning (me included).

Denied!!! Found my circa 1999 Logitech Wingman Formula Force in the loft. Weighty force feedback steering wheel/pedal combo that cost a couple of hundred quid back then. After an hour of fiddling with hacking Saitek drivers, I got it working in Windows 7 64bit but hardly any games recognise it out of the box. Apparently it's not really a USB device, it's a serial device with a USB adaptor.

Think I'll skip it :/

Went to the bookshop to find something to read. The people responsible for writing the synopses at the back of a book really could be a little more creative.

"[Protagonist] was at rock bottom, until one day a mysterious/beautiful person walked in his/her live/office/home and changed everything!"

I had like ten books in my hands with similar synopses. All trying and completely failing to grab my attention. Of course, all the books may have had very similar stories, but then it's even more important to come up with something that sets them apart so uninformed readers like me can make a decision.

(Ended up getting Life of Pi and another one Ian Banks' Culture novels.)

They seem to have a bad rep but I've been using them for years - mainly ebay purchases but also taking payments the odd time - never had an issue.

I feel like with the exception of a few specific, relatively high profile cases, PayPal's bad rep comes from practices about ten-fifteen years ago that have completely changed now. I also use it regularly, in a variety of ways, and have never had a problem.

Burgled last week. Suspect trying to sort out the insurance claim will be at least as traumatic as the actual burglary :-/
