Got an idea for a series of features so I thought I'd float it here first.

The idea is to discuss where certain game IPs have disappeared to. Games that are more than ripe for a this-gen makeover and remake, but are conspicuous by their absence. I've already bleated on and bemoaned the lack of a decent SSX title this-gen but can anyone think of any more?

My short(ish) list:

Interstate 76
Syndicate
SSX
Rallisport Challenge 2 (or any decent off-roader)
Mech Warrior
Theme (something that doesn't suck)

Good call on WaveRace 64. I mean can NO ONE do a decent Jetski game?

Pikmin Wii and BG&E2 are coming soon, aren't they?

I'd like to know where this gen's Elite (or other space trader game) is. I'd love to even play something like a beefed up Colony Wars

Well yeah there is that.

Remember EG covering a story about a new Syndicate and a new Desert Strike game AEONS ago? I think it was Rob that did the write-up. I might PM the bugger just to make sure I'm not going mad.

Just PMed Shinji and like a thoroughly decent bloke he did actually fill in some of the gaps as to what happened to Syndicate and Desert Strike. Basically Syndicate got canned early on as being a bit too sandboxy and too close to GTA. Whereas Desert Strike was to be penned by Pandemic, but got canned in favour of Mercenaries.

Hmm, pity.

If they managed to turn Syndicate into a GTA clone, then it probably deserved to get cancelled.

Forgot about Desert Strike though, that was a good game. Thinking about it though, there really aren't that many flying games anymore.

Where is our nextgen mission-based helicopter game like Desert Strike, or a 3D space game like Forsaken or Descent, or flying shmup Space Harrier / After Burner style, or failing that, just a plain old next gen flight sim?

I'd love a next-gen Tie Fighter, or yeah, Colony Wars will do.

There is a flying one coming out - it's a Tom Clancy endorsed thing isn't it ?

HAWX

Not looking that hot. More arcadey or like Ace Combat than anything else. But with you on the Tie Fighter ./ Colony Wars style game, or for that matter Freespace 2.

A WRC would be good, but I guess there won't be one anytime soon. Or as Peej said RC3.

I can't remember who just nabbed the rights to the WRC stuff. I've got a horrible feeling it might've been EA but I'm sure Sony lost the rights to it a while back - which could at least mean we'll see a decent rally game at some stage. I loved the Evo Studios WRC stuff though, really wish they'd done another one this gen.

RSC3 is just a hope in a hat, I can't see it ever happening. Hell, like just about every other 360 owner I'd just settle for an RSC2 patch that allowed me to play the feckin' game on the 360 again.

They teased a new SSX in Burnout Paradise. No idea what happened with that.

That'd be all I want, btw.

I suppose the limiting factor to all these games would be how many functions they can fit on a joypad that we can actually remember, otherwise they'd all end up like that damn Star Trek game on the 360.

Wasn't a huge fan of Freespace mainly because I didn't get on with the mouse control. A pad would be better, but a flightstick would be the ideal. Either they'd have to do a crazy peripheral like they did with Steel Battalion, or at least release a flightstick and allow keyboard connection. They sell steering wheels for the consoles, so no reason why a flightstick couldn't work.

I'd love a decent off-road bike game, in the mould of ExciteBike 64 but with a decent frame rate. But that's not lost IP - there have been loads of motocross games, just none of them have been much cop as far as I know.

I haven't seen a RC game for a long time now. Last one I can think of was Re-volt, and that was a couple of gens ago.

Weird you should mention Re-Volt because that's actually going in the article early on. With Acclaim seemingly rising from the ashes it'd be nice to see it revived. Though there is a light at the end of the tunnel, there's a 360 RC game on the way though hopefully it's not shit.

A this-gen Motocross Madness would be ace.

Possibly an interesting variant on the idea is looking at the way that genres have come and gone, not just the obvious ones (platformers, for instance), but also things like the Max Power era of driving games (there seemed to be loads of them a few years back, where are they all now?) and the GTA clone (okay, so there's still stuff like Saint's Row 2 but the more recent trend seems to have been putting open-world play into other genres like driving and FPS'es rather than the more direct GTA clones we were seeing a few years back, presumably because everyone realised it was actually a lot harder than Rockstar made it look...)

Just a suggestion, anyway.

Tis a good suggestion. I mean wherefore art thou, military sim? I can remember the early to mid 90s where you couldn't move for Tank, Plane or even Submarine sims but now they're rarer than hen's teeth.

Lost Genres has more of a ring to it than "Where's this generation's....." anyway.

I believe the Strike series is still alive and kicking - just wearing a different colour shirt. Developer bloke gave a speech at this year's Gamers Day in London and mentioned working on the single player mode of a PS2 Strike title, only for it to metamorphose into... the Battlefield games. Shock and Awe indeed.

We badly need more Colony Wars-style space sims - there was something vaguely similar planned for the PSP (via PSN) not so long ago, I believe. It'd be nice to see a decent Soul Reaver update sometime, too. Oh, and of course - GPOLICEGPOLICEGPOLICEGPOLICEGPOLICE

It's not really a genre, as such, but arcade style games in general are vanishing. I'm not just thinking of the ultra difficult £1 per play style game here, but rather old-school light games. Apart from brief flashes on PSN, XBLA or PSP, people don't seem to have any tolerance for the pick-up-and-play titles - this includes propert platformers (Pandemonium / Crash / Sly / Klonoa), simple sports games (Sensible Soccer / Speedball), basic driving games (Outrun, Sega Rally), mindless blasters (Serious Sam) etc. Even hack'n'slashes are getting mocked out of existence now.

The problem is that consumers have seen it all before and find them tedious now, and developers can't think of ways of spicing them up without turning them into a FPS or GTA clone. It's almost like games need to have vast amounts of depth, 20,000 button combinations, or 40 hours of random map exploration to be accepted now. (Battlefield = nextgen Desert Strike? Really?)

And this would doom any attempt to revisit any of the games listed here - unless they came out as a £3 download, reviewers would leave the games languishing in 4/10 hell, consumers wouldn't touch them with a bargepole, and the devs give up even trying.

(Of course, I'm not ruling out the possibility that I'm just old, miserable and too stuck in my ways for my own good...)

It doesn't really matter to me who makes the next decent Rally game as long as some one does it. All the rally games of this generation - Is there one apart from Dirt? I don't think so - haven't really had the same ... spirit some rally games on older consoles had.

/is disappointed by the "next-gen"

Motorstorm could count as a rally game from this generation, although DiRT is the only 'sim' rally game there is and from what I played it's not simmy at all.

What was the name of the other Sim rally game that came out on the PC a couple of years ago, the one with the rally driver that died from cancer? That was excellent, if impossible to drive in a straight line on.

I'd love a remake of this. Keep the same graphical style and soundtrack, a much larger game world, free roaming gameplay and online co-op.

Groove Champion FTW!

Also another franchise I would like to see return is Wing Commander. With Mark Hamil and Biff from BTTF of course ;-)

I was thinking this the other day and started trying to make something in flash. Elite is one of the first games I played and still has a place in my heart, I was hoping to make something in a similar vein, but 360 degree movement in 3 planes is beyond my feeble brain. So it's 3d ish with sprites like privateer at the moment.
