Oh lordy, it's that time of year again. The Christmas Decos go up in shops, Noddy Holder screams "So here it is, merry christmas" from every de-tuned AM radio and it's time to start thinking about the Game of the Year poll.

This year I want to do something similar to last year's but I'm looking for better ideas - after all, last year's results were interesting to say the least and got a little bit skewed because of the structure of the poll.

So what I'm aiming to do is an F1-style points table (no you can't skew the results by causing people to speed in the pitlane but you'll get the idea).

For the actual game of the year you'll get 10 votes. No replicated games. Just ten games ordered from 1 to 10 with 1 getting the most points, 10 getting the least.

Simple no?

Also on the lookout for other categories to give the article a bit of flavour. Stuff like "Stupidest goatee in the games industry" or "Most original design achieved by joining up all Peter Molyneux's Liver Spots with a permanent marker" sort of thing so suggestions gratefully received.

It's too early in the day for the poll to go up but expect something Mid to Late December when most of the big titles are out and around.

I honestly don't think I've played 10 new games this year to be able to do that!

The new scoring system sounds good, I actually did something similar with the data you collected last year when I was horrified not to see Shadowrun on the list, and obviously had too much time on my hands. It was a while ago so I can't remember exactly how it worked, but here's how it worked out:

1.Portal / Orange box (65)
2.Bioshock (50)
3.Super Mario Galaxy (44)
4.COD4 (35)
5.Mass Effect (32)
6.Halo 3 (29)
7.Crackdown (15)
8.FIFA 2008 (12)
9.Flat Out (8)
Stalker
11.Guitar Hero 3 (7)
Shadowrun
Okami
14.Assassin’s Creed (6)
15.Ocarina of Time (5)
Skate.
Slitherlink
Space Giraffe
19.Ratchet and Clank (4)
Pokemon

That's not too shoddy a list. These things are just a bit of fun, I still reckon that results get horribly skewed - mainly because I keep forgetting what stuff arrived this year and what arrived the year before!

Tis crazy!

Hopefully a points system might negate the number of "ties" as well.

The deadline was cut short last year too, I was still thinking about my choices when the scores went up. I'm a shameless procrastinator though, so I'd probably have never got around to it anyway.

Yeah, points system sounds good, although there's been very little of note this year

And to keep up the tradition, I can still pick Gradius V, right?

In all honesty, and all kidding aside, I don't think there's been anything better anyway.

I was seriously tight for time last year, what with my nipper's imminent arrival, and AATG going into meltdown with GamersUniverse kicking off. Though it was a fuck of a lot of work last year I'm willing to step into the breach again. This time though the deadlines for submissions will be extra tight and cut-off at Dec 31st so the article can go up in the new year.

Best / worst handheld game.
Best / worst downloadable game.
Best / worst plastic game peripheral.
Most innovative / irritating game mechanic.
Game of the year (if you only played the first 30 minutes).
Best game that didn't have an annoying user interface.
Best game where the devs bothered to spend more than 5 minutes on the single player mode.
What could have been game of the year if the publisher didn't shit all over it.
The game that would have been voted as "game of the decade" if it was an exclusive on the other platform.

Most significantly raped childhood (possibly Bethesda as the only significant nominee this year - still pending)

WTF story of the year (MGS4 has a good chance, despite everyone claiming that it explains everything)

Best game no one will play (at least until the cult status forces a reprint in 5 years)

This year's lens flare (you got specular highlighting all over my ragdoll)

Best new use of old technology

Best old use of new technology

Best thing Peter Moore ever said to Yuji Naka.

Or, to be more generic, best Peter Moore quote.

His "I killed the Dreamcast" line I read as though he's Scar confessing to Mufassah's murder.

Most broken on day of release game?

I'd say Mercs 2... but Ubisoft still has a couple of stools to push out this year...
