I'm (hopefully) getting a 360 at the weekend with some of the Gamestation vouchers that I've had stored up for the past two years. Now that the Premium has dropped to 169, I was going to go for that over the Elite.

But then a thought occurred. I haven't been paying much attention to it previously as I didn't have a 360, but I now remember reading about forced installs of games. If that is the case, and if I haven't completely dreamt that up, is 60gb likely to be enough? What are the typical install sizes? Are they really forced? And exactly where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

I'll probably have close to 15 games going at once, but then I probably won't install all of them I shouldn't have thought. Loading times don't really bother me, unless they're absolutely huge. I use that time to press F5 on the forum to see what's happening.

Fecking delete post button in Firefox doesn't delete the post, it adds another one!

Micro Explosion wrote before I clicked on the wrong post to delete!: There will be no forced installs but there will be an option to install them to reduce load times, it won't make much difference on newer games because they're designed to handle the drive speed and stream ahead pretty well. They haven't implemented it yet but it should be in the autumn update.

From what I remember them saying, installs aren't likely to be massive so 60 gig will be plenty unless you want to never uninstall or have 20 games going at once.

I iz stoopid.

It's the PS3 which has forced installs; the only 'forced install' I'm aware of on the 360 is the extra DLC content for Oblivion which comes on a seperate disk.

The upcoming update will *allow* you to install games to HDD if you want to, but will still require the disk in the drive to verify you own it.

Good news then!

I'm hopefully going to be a proud owner of a 360 this weekend. Although I'm still wondering whether I should wait to see whether they do release a 60nm chip version.

The price cuts are almost certainly preceeding the new rev, so if you can wait a month, you stand a good chance of getting a new one. Is 'jasper' the name of the all-65nm version?

Disk drive will still whine - I'm certain of that. :o(

True, and a bit crap it is too. Soul Calibur IV lets you opt to install but it does fuck all to improve load times. You're still waiting 3 or 4 seconds between stages :-(

Hmmm, I think I might wait for the hardware revision as I've now heard quite a few times that we should start seeing them dribbling (which is usually a feat left exclusively to the staff) into stores around October time. I can wait. I still have about 30 games in my collection that I haven't even touched yet so I don't NEED one. I just WANT one.

Another month won't hurt.

o_O

How did you keep them for so long without all the printing rubbing off?

In an envelope in my work drawer. If you leave them in your wallet, they rub off within about 2 weeks. They say they won't replace them, but all I used to do was go in and buy Gift Vouchers before they rubbed off.
