So, er, it's a DS, but with two (slightly smaller) touchscreens, two cameras, an SD slot, no GBA cart slot and it's a bit thinner.

As the saying goes - "what".

Also, obvious thought, where was the last time I heard something bandied about as Nintendo's "third platform"... oh yes, that would be the "original" DS.

So, if this is a third platform, presumably Nintendon't are now going to put resources behind games that can only be played on it. Again, my only reaction is "what".

Whether the hardware itself is a success, or deserves to be a success, or is actually really excellent regardless of success, or not, my gut reaction is that this is the biggest, most offensive kick in the teeth that Nintendo have dealt to their customers since... well, actually, it's pretty much classic Nintendo wallet raping.

And it's SMALLER!! (caps used for both emphasis and irony) We might as well hang on for March when I expect them to release the DSmIcro, complete with magnifying glass so that you can actually make anything out on the screens, and a team of baby ants to crawl across the screen and hit the controls for you.

(note to self: don't read news stories that you know will only incense you at this time of the morning)

Oh, I now realize that the screens are bigger, but the machine itself is smaller. I'm not really sure that that's any real comfort.

And it'll have a store like the (insert console of choice) from which you can download games. That's about the only really good thing, it seems, but once again smacks of Nintendo's intentions to phase out anyone who doesn't upgrade to this new, completely separate, "third platform".

Eh? Sure it's a comfort.

Anyways, bring it on. If it's any better than a Lite+R4DS, I'll have one.

Nothing different to what they did with the GBC. Not that anyone has actually said that games will specifically be made for it, but so what if they do?

And now photos are turning up, it doesn't actually appear to be any smaller. Slightly wider to compensate for the bigger screens, slightly thinner now they removed the GBA slot.

Hopefully this means I can upgrade my Phat to a Lite quite cheaply now - there are bound to be plenty of people trading in to get the upgrade. Maybe this also means I could pick up Guitar Hero On Tour second hand as well for next to nothing?

Hey if it works, it works...!

Seriously though - this is going to sell like Sex Juice on a Sex Farm in the middle of a Sex Drought.

Glad I put off upgrading my DS phat (Yes, I'm still going along with a launch unit) over the Summer. This seems like a DS Lite but with bigger screens, SD slot for some extra, stupidly cheap storage and some pointless cameras that will be mobile phone useless (at least that'll be my guess).

Price seems to be around that of the current DS Lite so it makes sense to think most new purchases will just go to this SKU unless they seriously discount the old Lite and keep churning them out.

I've still got my Phat too. Mainly because the R4 works in it, and it does the job I want it to.

New screen? Yeah that would be nice. Camera? Fuck off I've got one ta. Two touch-screens? Yep great, split the fucking devs down the middle as to which unit to support. No GBA slot. Not bothered.

Smaller and thinner? C'moaannn! The Lite was flimsy enough as it was.

Haven't heard anything about two touch screens.

It's in the first post of this thread. IlMaestro says "Two slightly smaller touch screens"

Which just sounds completely daft - surely it'd be a huge mistake to change the hardware that radically?

Nah, there really is no mention of two touchscreens on DSfanboy or Kotaku or even the pinnacle of games reporting, AATG.

Probably a byproduct of ilamestro's knickers being slightly twisty :P

Say, fellas, have you heard the the one about the new version of the Nintendo Wii? You heard this?

It's called the Wiii.

LOL! :D

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the Wii got a similar re-jig, though it'd be the first "under the telly" console that Nintendo did dick about with like that (I think...I seem to have a vague recollection that the SNES was redesigned at one point but I could be wrong).

NES and SNES both got smaller v2 models. Not much point of that on the Wii, but surely multiple colours will be launched when sales start to flag.

Some fintness thing that comes with a pedo-meter.
A 3D picross game
Mario and Luigi RPG 3
A new Warioware title (though Wario isn't in the name, or something).

What? News of a new Punch-Out is great! The NES + SNES versions were awesome.

And ilmaestro, what's this about Nintendo's third platform? They stopped talk of that years ago, when it became clear that the DS was successful enough to replace the GB as Nintendo's main portable brand.

And finally... erm, how is this different to Sony announcing another version of the PSP less than a year after the last one? Or indeed all those models of the PS3? Not to mention the 360 'Elite' and whatnot versions. You really must not be a morning person, or something. :)

I think you'll find that it's a WiFi Peado-meter. It's carried by a parent and activated when certain words or phrases appear in the Pictochat on the DS it is linked to.

I think you have the morning problem - Ninty have actually used the phrase themselves to describe the DSi ;-)

The DSi adds a new element (the camera) that is available, and actively encouraged, to be used in games. Also, they've taken away something (the GBA slot) that current gen games are already using, like GH On Tour, for example.

All of the other platforms just had hardware refreshes (smaller, lighter, better, cheaper) and had no radical changes to their core feature set.

Well, the PS3 kinda lost b/c twice (once perfect hardware emu, once software/GPU hybrid) and the 360 grew HDMI. But agreed that this will be potentially used as a complete platform with their own range of DSi games and DLC and so shouldn't be seen as a straight up revision, even if it isn't enough of a change to call it a full new generation of product either.

Really? My mistake then. I just skim read the features, and assumed that the camera is just there for taking pics and stuff.

Also, I wasn't aware that GH required the GBA slot... and that's a recent, very heavily advertised game too. Bit silly of Nintendo, then.

NewYork - a polite "fuck off and apologize" is in order here, methinks. ^_^ The early word in the reports was that both screens were touchscreens. It now has been clarified that they're not, which makes this announcement at once less useful but slightly more reassuring.

Kay - Nintendo's words, not mine. Again, in the reports I've read, Nintendo have been cited as calling this a "third platform" and not a DS replacement, another clear entry in the Nintendo bullshit hall of fame. And people have a go at Sony's PR! Sheesh...

Sweet trailer for upcoming DS games.

Not that I'll end up playing many of them, but still, I like trailers like that.

Crikey, if this is true then it could be dead on it's arse before it even starts. Not only will it not play GBA stuff but it won't play half the titles in the average exchange racks at Game!
