...integrated the forum into the front page ala this?

I'm considering ways to maximise the site's potential and as the vast majority of traffic is through the forum it's as good a place as any to start. However, I'm also wary of alienating the people that use the forum because it's very subtle and discreet.

For those of you that are against the idea, would you approve if I kept the fairly work-safe version of the forum up and running but changed the forum link to the integrated version? That would mean that those of you in the know could bookmark the subtler forum but new visitors would just view it via the main site not knowing any different?

Also I know it's my site and I can do whatever the hell I want without anyone's permission, but I am more than happy to seek opinions from you guys because after all, AATG'd be nothing without you all.

I'm all for it.

Means I visit the front page more often. :)

Works for me but I don't use it at work.

For the work-safe people, is there any way that it could have that page so the colour scheme is slightly different and any images are more subtle? I'm sure those that use it at work will have more of an idea of what it is that makes it 'unsafe' for them than me though.

If you've tried something like Hulu.com (where you can 'turn down the lights') then that's what I mean i.e. they click a button and it makes the rest of the page around the forum part more subtle for worky people.

/may be waffling

Sounds cool to me. As long as I can use the work-safe option! :o)

Go for it.

Ooh! Speaking of integration, ever think it'd be a good idea to have all new front-page articles come up as new forum threads, too, so that the front-page comments and forum thread posts would be one and the same? With a digg link in the forum thread, as well (but obviously for the actual article as opposed to the thread). I reckon that'd encourage commenting and digging. Eh? Eh?

good idea on the posting in the forum as well as the front page, but it might cause a pit of forum spam depending on how quick the articles come around

I only use the forum at breaktime now I'm freelancing in someone else's office, so no problem for me, although it looks a bit busy.

Now that is a good idea. I've seen this done at another site, basically all front page news bits are harvested and dumped into forum posts. It's not a bad way to generate a bit more traffic and get people who just use the forum to comment on front page stuff more easily. Good call.

That only really works if you then incorporate the forum replies into the comments section on the story, otherwise there's two touch-points for people and conversations then tend to break down and it can also make your homepage article look bare, otherwise.

I certainly wouldn't object to integrating the front page articles into the forum view - but the other way round I'm not convinced about. It would save me a lot of time being able to see the forum and new articles and new comments from one view, but you've done a great job on the front page as is, and I think the articles should be the main focus of anyone who just visits via the main url. They can already see that the forum's active via the 'latest forum activity' box.

sure go for it, though I might go for the safer option depending on where I am. Good ideas coming through here.

Well, yeah, the front-page posts and forum posts would have to be one-and-the-same.

But it would get a bit spammy, I guess. Perhaps if it were optional, or summat.

Nice idea, but I would be one asking for the link to the "current" layout for my bookmarks.

As you included an option to go straight to the forum in traditional discrete form, I don't see a problem.
