Could 2009 be the bleakest gaming year yet?

A quick glance at a few "what's coming up in 2009" lists makes for some pretty bleak reading. Sequels, sequels and more sequels (some to games that are barely a few weeks old as it is), bland shooters, bland sandbox titles. Very few gems amongst the dreck.

Does anyone else think that, with the current spate of layoffs at the biggies like EA, THQ, Sony etc, that we're heading for one of the bleakest gaming years in the last 25 years in 2009?

Cheer me up. What's upcoming that's got your attention? Could it finally be the year that "attic developed" stuff gets a bigger slice of the pie than big-budget but disappointing triple A stuff?

Well, 2008 didn't look too good a year ago and look how that turned out.

Guess the time of year doesn't help. With all the big shots having blarted their content into space over the last couple of months, it's bound to go quiet.

Was thinking more of the economic downturn affecting big publishers and projects. It still amazes me that dreck like WET gets funded and will get released when other stuff, more interesting stuff like Ghostbusters etc, gets shunted onto a siding.

i can never get my head around all the sequel hate. obviously if devs (or more likely publishers) get complacent about something selling and let the quality drop then that's not a good thing, but i'd say it's quite hard to get excited about a new ip as it is an unknown quantity, whereas a sequel to something you like makes it easy to have an idea about what to expect.

bland if definitely bad, but a bland sequel is no worse than a bland new game. with the exception of ico after playing the demo on an opsm disc, all the games that i've looked forward to release the most have been sequels. dating back to elite 2 :)

and over the course of the year, no doubt some decent new ips will eventually surface, but as someone who doesn't game much, i'm happy just to cherry pick a couple of decent new games and a few decent sequels to things i've liked and be done with it.

Doesn't matter for most of us though? I'm sure I'm not the only one with a huge backlog and there are plenty of games out there that I'm waiting to hit the magic price. I could probably game to 2011 without the need for another new game to be released :D

I think there's a limit to just how many sequels a dev / publisher can squeeze into such a tight time frame before people will just stop bothering. The Guitar Hero 5 thing got me. Where the hell is there left to go with it? What was wrong with just keeping the World Tour game and producing more tracks for it, what's the point in a whole new game?

Reinvention is the key though - Activision are promising quite a substantial reboot for the next Tony Hawk game so let's hope they can deliver on that promise.

So far I've got nothing preordered for 2009 except for Skate 2 - which hasn't quite reached the "one sequel too many" status that so many other titles are beginning to have.

Nah, 2007 was off the chart, and 2008 was off the newly made chart, so I expect 2009 to pull through for us again.

I would say the two games likely to end the gen as my two favorites (or at least in my top five) are due this year - Yakuza 3 and Final Fantasy XIII (not exactly going against the sequel grain, but still ^^;).

There's just no real value for publishers in getting us all excited about next year's games right now when they want us to be buying all of this year's. :) The first few months of next year are bound to reveal a few unexpected corkers in addition to what we know about.

Surely there's a modest hope for the new Team ICO game next year too?

APB and Jumpgate Evolution will be out next year, they should keep me occupied, anything else is a bonus.

The Team Ico game's a given. Definitely cannot wait to see what those guys do with the PS3.

APB's got a modicum of interest. I guess I really wanted the thread to be about big upcoming projects that may well end up like Fracture etc. Big budget games that just don't sell.

Er I'll shut up about that now though... :)

some sequels aren't really sequels.

let's be clear, there is a huge difference between treadmill sequels and something like RE5, Killzone 2 or Riddick.

Oh aye I agree. I'm directing most of my ire at Activision.

Maybe saving a little side-salad for EA but forgiving them because they're doing SSX 5 next year and Skate 2.

I'm absolutely bricking it about BG & E

After PoP I really am more than a bit concerned that it might turn out to be one of the biggest disappointments since Danii Minogue told me I couldn't have her phone number.

I'm really still not expecting much from KZ and Resi apart from gentle evolution of their last-gen versions - no problem in Resi's case, but KZ needs to be better than that to be of any relevance.

Same thing happened in the build up to the first game, though. One of the most unexpectedly hyped games on the PS2, I thought.

Bits I've heard about Resi from people whose opinions I trust have me more than a bit worried about that too. It looks stunning but I can't grab the demo any more, so I'll just have to take their word for it that despite the looks, it's got more than a few things wrong with it.

Killzone 2. Once again I don't quite understand the heaping adulation it's getting. The first game was pretty naff and by the numbers, and though the sequel looks super-uber-smooth to the point where you'd truly believe that guerrilla are the second coming when it comes to pushing the PS3 to its limits, it's still just an FPS...A fucking luscious looking one sure, but where's the innovation for the nation, station?

Don't you remember, that was the quote I gave that Ian McKenzie guy at the Radio 1 PS3-a-thon.

Which is probably why they didn't choose my audio quote and chose tomo's instead :)

What home icon is this?

Anyway, I saw KZ2 at the other place's Expo. It was sat next to Resistance 2, and graphically it just blew it away. The environment they were using looked more interesting, and there seemed to be some decent AI at play (else good use of scripting). I'm not going to buy it, because it's just an FPS - but for all those people that do buy FPSes I'm pretty interested.

Killzone 2 looked amazingly good and it being right next to Resistance 2 did the latter game no favours at all.

It looks leaps and bounds better than anything else I've seen on the PS3.

Without wanting to come across as a PS3 hater, which I'm not, I just don't have the time for two consoles.

Mine's not been switched on in about 6 months and I have MGS4, LBP and R2 on my desk completely untouched.

So to be honest I don't mind that there's nothing on the horizon as I have a glut of 360 titles to play.
