I'm planning on settling a bet with the missus again next year. A whole month without gaming. I haven't looked at the release schedules to figure out which month it'll be but an iPod Touch is at stake. If I make it through an entire month without gaming, looking at games sites or posting on 'em - I get the iPod. If I don't manage it, I dont't get one.

So could you manage a gaming sabbatical? I know a few here have done so in the past (Binky, Rhythm) - and if you did take one, what would you fill your time with instead? (Me - A lot more Uni work and a lot more sketching and drawing)

I could but would really struggle with boredom. I can do other things but none of them are as much fun as playing games. Unless I take up skydiving or something.

Quiet easily. I recommend the month June, July and August for it. Good weather, plenty of other things to do.
I'd probably go on holiday, which I have from July to August incidentally. :)

I can find any number of things to replace gaming but it's whether they'll be as satisfying as gaming really...and as relaxing (if there's one thing that chills me out more than anything else, it's slumping in front of a console and twiddling my thumbs for a few hours - perfect antidote to a boring work day).

If I fill in the gaps with art stuff I'm always trying to finish, that would work to some extent but sometimes it's hard to get inspired enough to draw anything new.

I could just about but I couldn't do a month away from AATG - I don't know what I'd come back to. Well actually, I do. A wasteland.

So it's not really in my best interests to do so.

Oh who am I kidding? I'm properly addicted to CoD 4/5 online.

I do it all the time - I tend to spend several months not playing anything at all and then a few weeks or a month intensively playing a few games, then I've had my fill and I tend to not buy anything for a while again. Don't really find boredom's a problem - I tend to spend most of my free time playing my guitar or reading anyway.

Mind you at the same time I also play games at work so technically if I were to take a sabbatical I also wouldn't be able to get much work done...:)

Not visiting here would be hard. Not visiting EG for a month - piece of piss.

Not reading up on games - Now I'm going to find that hard, because every day I trawl through the usual gaming news sites for interesting gobbets of info (and post a few on here now and again) so that's going to take two things - Honesty (the missus works here but she doesn't work in the same building so I'd have to be brutally honest to myself and not sneak onto gaming stuff while at work) and stubborn donnkey-like willpower.

I've got both in spades so I reckon it'll work. Either that or I'll go even more nuts and end up roasting my co-workers over a hastily constructed barbecue pit in the middle of the office.

I have taken a number (5) sabbaticals over the last 3 years. Oh hang on, - should be posting in the RROD thread!

Seriously, the odd break does help the old sanity and I usually find my appetite is reinvigorated when I catch up with a few gems. Certainly aids the quality threshold by not playing all and sundry.

Not trawling the gaming net is another thing entirely :)

I took a 5 year break from gaming between the Megadrive and the PS1 eras, and it was weird because I can't actually remember what the hell I used to do with my time (probably drank a lot)

Yeah, I often go a week or more without playing anything so a month's not a stretch.

That said, I've owned an iPod Touch. I'd recommend throwing the bet early so as to not have to subject yourself to using one.

I reckon I can easily do it. I've gone weeks without playing anything a few times this year.

Not posting on here + reading about games would be nigh on impossible though. That's what I rely on to get me through the boring periods at work.

And don't listen to Rhythm, the iPod touch is fab!

Yeah I reckon not posting or reading about games would be the hardest part. I mean what's the alternative? Do some actual work?

Yup. Got a stack of training to do next year and a complete overhaul of our entire intranet site. So for the first time in...grud knows how many years...I intend to spend as much of the day working as possible for that one month.

My boss will probably have a coronary.

I took 3 years off gaming once, between mothballing my SEGA Multimega and getting a PS1, but I couldn't do it at the moment. I've got a backlog of unfinished stuff it would probably take me 3 years to clear though, so I could probably stop buying games and not be short of anything to play for a long time.

Not sure if I could to be honest at the moment. I think I may not have enough other current hobbies to fill up the weekday evenings. I think not being on here and a couple of other sites would be the most frustrating.

Might be a good experiment to do though, see what other interests I might rekindle.

Yeah, I reckon I could probably do this too. Although not posting here would be a bit annoying. I could probably manage but it does break the day up nicely. :)

...er, I mean - I looove you guys and couldn't bear to be away! :)

Heh, for a month? Of course I could. I thought you meant a year+ in which case I also think I could, but wouldn't want to, unless it was for a very large bet.

Yeah, I missed the bit about not posting. It fills my breaks at work and I like the people here - wouldn't want to miss out on that.

Well, I may be on an enforced sabbatical next year. Life's changing and I'm being forced to find somewhere else to live. Just had an excellent offer of lodgings, which is all I'll be settling for, cash wise, and I'm applying for a new career in Sept, which will be more money...

Just won't be doing much gaming/net stuff for about six months. I imagine I can write two novels with all that free time.

And find a new woman. ;)

Would you be able to post in non-gaming threads?

Been about 10 days since I last played a game as I've been up to my eyeballs in PGCE stuff.

Doesn't make me want to stop posting in things like the Dexter thread at E.G.

Ahh.. too easy - this months Edge has that end of year emptiness about it!* :)

*spot the non-PS3 owning, non-Uncharted 2 playing generalisation in that statement.

Man, you missed some of the best stuff!
(assuming you didn't get a MD- released 1990, PS1 released 1995).

I hope you've rectified that in the interim.
