EG beta hands on

Company of Heroes in a Warhammer 40,000 setting sounds great to me.

Beta is available for everyone from the 28th, anyone else looking to play this? I'd be well up for some vs cpu co-op.

That would be fantastic, though I am not sure my laptop would be able to handle the game well enough.

Might try and have a look at the beta.

As a Soulstorm owner I think I'll give this a try this evening.

Beta is Live! If you didn't buy Soulstorm on Steam then read the following!

THQInsider wrote:
On 21 January, the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War II Multiplayer Beta launches exclusively for Soulstorm owners. The Beta features all four races, five multiplayer maps and Games For Windows LIVE TrueSkill Matchmaking.

How to get started...

1. Open up Steam (if you don't have steam you can download the client and create an account for free at http://www.steampowered.com).

2. Go to the "My Games" area on Steam, and choose "Activate a Product". Here's where you enter your Soulstorm registration key. Adding Soulstorm as a “Non-Steam” game will not work. However, you don’t need to install Soulstorm if you don’t want to, it just needs to be registered on your games list in Steam for the Beta to work.

3. Install the Dawn of War II Beta (it will appear on January 21st, and will appear in the "My Games" area as “Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War II – Beta”). Select the game to begin installation.

4. Whilst you’re waiting for the Dawn Of War II Beta to install, go to http://www.gamesforwindows.com to create a free Games For Windows LIVE account. If you already have an account (either on your PC or Xbox 360) you can skip this and just log in when you start playing.

5. Once the Beta has downloaded simply click the "Launch" button in Steam and log into LIVE. You can then choose a ranked team battle, or host a custom public match online.

Enjoy :)

If you don't own it at all it's £5 on Steam at the moment.

I rather boldly stayed up till near 3am and played a quick 1-v-1 as Space Marines against easy mode computer controlled Tyranids, after quickly capturing a lot of nodes i went up against what I assumed would be an easy to defeat enemy stronghold ... ERP! there was feckn hordes of the bastards, I have no idea how they had that many but they did, then the proceeded to bum me for a while but I got spawned a Dreadnaught which got me back into the fight and has a well cool (nicked from the original DoW intro) special ability and took them to task, they beat me by getting more points than me though I'm not 100% sure how as I was half asleep by this stage.

Online multiplayer seems to focus on two team but up too 3 people can be on each team on the map I played yesterday. Each side also has 3 types of hero/commander units that you select depending on your style of play so play styles seem quiet varied.

I was able to max the graphics on my rig at 1920*1200 so everyone should be able to run this nicely :D

I'm definitely getting this and will be up for some multiplayer over the weekend if anyone else is around then.

The first Dawn of War is excellent and I've finally bothered playing through them. These and CoH are the best RTS games I've played in recent years - you actually need to do more than tank rush so I hope they've done the same with this.

/rambles some more.

I didn't play the original very much but I have played a bit of CoH recently which it reminds me of a lot..... but with robots and shooty aliens ftw.

Only briefly so far, 1 vs the CPU and the other in a 3 vs 3 team game.

It seems like it's a reskinned version of CoH with a bit more flexibility and depth in the options available. CoH did have the advantage that the weapons and names of things are obvious as to what they mean and how good you can expect them to be, this doesn't always manage that.

Giving the option of different hero types is nice, although for the team based games, some of the choices are pointless unless your team is determined to work together. Being a healer when the other members just wander off and leave you is slightly irritating - don't know if the CPU does that yet.

It's going to take longer to get into all of the options and decent tactics, but it's a definite sale.

I'll try to remember to throw out some invites so we can get some games going, sometime. XBL/GfWL tag is dirtylake.

Ah your dirtylake, been meaning to message you on Steam to find out who the fuck you were ;P

Will add you on GFW and hopefully get a game over the weekend?

Playing 1v1 on the 6 player maps can be rather entertaining.

Definite launch purchase for me, it just seems more visceral than CoH.

I think I was on from about 7:30 until 1:30 last night and it was excellent fun, especially the 3v3 and 2v2 games we managed to set up.

Very frenetic, but at the same time it draws out the skills and some cunning when it comes to making use of cover.... nothing like watching a couple of Bolter units mow down a mass of advancing infantry from cover without casualties.

Resisting the urge to just throw whatever you have forward when you slip behind is difficult but it's very rewarding when you actually get it right.

Not that I manage that often but still, it's fun.

Pretty swish. Been playing a load of vs CPU games to get the hang of it. Really hectic on the larger of the two maps 2player maps, I feel a bit out of my depth at the moment. 3 v 3 must be crazy.

3v3 can be a little manic to say the least, I think it's going to take quite a while to work out the best army and hero that suits your playing style as well given the large differences in how things work.

Played a fewe 3v3s against bots and it is more hectic, but oddly I found it easier to deal with. Knowing that I didn't have to be everywhere, doing everything as the bot players on my team are also about doing things, improved it for me.

I reckon I'll be buying this now, it's a great laugh.

It'd be great with some kind of campaign map attached.

Woo, was able to give this a quick try. It seems fun, though I am usually more interested in the campaign than online stuff with DoW. I'm having to keep quite a bit of the settings below high but it still works well.

The ability of tanks to go through most walls even when it's not necessary is annoying I agree.

Is this available to pre-order on the EU steam? Only the beta shows up here, I hope it's not a region locked release.

Might have to get my mum to mail it me as Amazon are doing it pre-order for £22.

Sod that! I'll buy it for £23 off play or somewhere. I imagine they'll allow you to register your cd key on Steam soon enough and get the best of both worlds.

I hadn't realised that due to technical issues they've stopped do it until Monday so you're fine!

The codes they sent out yesterday were wrong, they resent them to the 100 people who got them, one of which was me.
