Some thoughts on the BG&E characters here.

You have to wonder whether Ubi really have the ability to make the sequel live up to the standards of the original these days, both because of their recent track record and also because of people's fond memories of the original raising expectations.

Was Beyond Good and Evil really all that good?

I remember playing it for a couple of hours and thinking it decent enough but it didn't grab me enough for me to get anywhere near completing it.

I loved the Pey'j character though.

It didn't really bite me until a few hours in, when you start being able to explore a decent chunk of the world and you start seeing the results of your first few missions having an actual impact on the world around you - most satisfying. Got a bit bored towards the end though, it all gets a bit silly for liking.

Was it really that good? I've no idea to be honest. Brainy Gamer are currently playing it as part of their Vintage Games Club and I was loathe to join in lest it ruin my rose-tinted memories. The GameCube is still plumbed into the television, so maybe I should have another playthrough while there's not much else on the horizon.

What is certain is that the spiraling text-entry system has to my knowledge, never been duplicated, nor bettered.

Still sat on my to do list all these years later. Don't think it is 360 backwards compatible so I best pull my finger out before my original xbox finally gives up.

Remember picking it up for £19.99 back in the day when new software at that price was a novelty!

Ooh yeah I'd forgotten about this - absolutely cracking system, it was.

Knock it off, fuzzballs. I don't eat flies and I harbour far too many filthy thoughts about Jade to be "related" to her.

I thought I'd give this a spin yesterday just to see how well / badly it's aged. One thing about Ancel is he's got a lot of ability to raise the tension in a game to almost ridiculous levels with some very simple gameplay dynamics and that comes across in spades in BG&E.

Even though I was playing the PS2 version, it still doesn't look too shoddy for its time (but I seriously don't remember it tearing quite as much - maybe this-gen of consoles has just got me looking for that stuff as standard).

It plays really well. Not a fan of the insta-kill stealth bits, and some of the aspects of the hub-based stuff could've been done better but the photography side-quests and the majority of the set pieces are still quite stunning, and I can't help but think that Ubi are going to do something truly horrible to the sequel that'll put them right back at the top of my shitlist.

Heh. I had a couple of hours on it last night too; started right from the beginning and got to the end of the Black Isle mission.

No tearing on the the GC version as far as I can see, but for some reason I did find the camera controls (the game camera, not Jade's) to be counterintuitive; I kept rotating them the wrong way. You're right though; low-res textures aside, it does look remarkably good.

One thing I had forgotten about was the one-time chance to photograph bosses; just like Metroid Prime, the last thing I want to do when I meet a new enemy is whip my camera/scanner out. Collectibles that once missed, can never be obtained, should be banned from games.
