Hey, that Metroid one is damned good!

Nice idea, and I'd love to see more games which actually looked like that. Braid comes close in some ways, yet some people still go on about it looking like a SNES game :/

Yeah, hopefully he's going places in future, i think it's all starting to kick off for him recently. Some great work indeed and he's been interviewed for Nintendo Power according to his thread on NeoGAF.

Saw the sonic ones on another site. Why oh why oh why can't we have a new sonic game like that instead of the usual dreck we do get from Sega?

What, remake Super Metroid? That picture's so dark I can hardly see anything. :)

Stunning images though, the Sonic ones in particular look like they could easily be in-game shots from an all-new HD 2D version. Wouldn't be surprised to see them on UK Resistance actually.

To be boring about it for a moment, actually in the case of things like Mario and Sonic I'm bloody glad they don't. One of the most vital aspects of their presentation is the clean, legible way it represents the size and boundaries of everything in the game world, making it very clear what you can and can't stand on, what things will kill you, etc. Those images, whilst nice to look at (although not totally my sort of thing tbh), would be an absolute nightmare to be able to work out where you could stand/jump/etc.

There's a really good real-life example of this too - the Donkey Kong Country series. One of the biggest problems of Rare's series was the fact it was so visually lush it was bloody hard to work out just which pixels would kill you and which wouldn't.

Hmm that is a good point - I wouldn't mind the background stuff looking a bit more like that though - sort of worked for Braid a fair bit...

I do wonder if this bloke will get any work out of having his stuff seen in so many places...just about every gamer I know seems to have linked to that bloke's site...

I think some of them are hosted locally still over at Kotaku if you wanna go searching through their godawful site.
