I just read this on a Belgian news site.
I babelfished it & polished up the translation a bit. Apologies if it reads awkward at points:

do 23/04/09 17:54 - electronics producer Appele has removed the iPhone gamne " Baby shaker" from its online store. The aim of the game is to shake a baby to death so that it's silent.

" Baby shaker" since Monday had been offered to buy on the Internet. Gamers must make an end in the game to the continuing yowl of a baby by shaking the iPhone hard, so the virtual baby gets brain trauma and dies.

An organisation which fights against lord lesions at baby' s condemn the game and required " apologies for the parents of victims and survivors". Independent bed cherry has already developed 10.000 games for the iPhone, but they must be approved each time by Apple. Apple will download billionth soon its in its onlineshop to celebrate.

So basically a really bad taste game got pulled.
I don't see a problem there.
I can also understand that there is an organisation which is trying to work on theis problematic issue of young babies being shaken to death.

What I find very strange is that the organisation demands apologies for the victims, survivors and their parents.

Isn't it a bit odd that people who shook their baby to death or nearly did so demand apologies because someone has gone and created something in very poor tatste which re-enacts what they've done?

If you create a rape game and rape victims complain and demand an apology. Fair enough. This one's a bit weird though no?
Or is it just me?

I covered this for Flytrap (no, my name isn't Doree) -

There's a video of the game through there. Not exactly a scandal of Hot Coffee proportions but it's a bit chilling.

I'd cover it for AATG (I love controversy, did you notice?) but it didn't seem much of a game, rather a funny thing you show your (childless) mates.

I was with you up to there. If the baby shaker devs don't need to give an apology, neither do the rape-game devs.

Oh, and if I had the time I'd make a Youtube vid of the app running to the backing theme of the chorus of Metro Station's "Shake It". It'd be lawls.

Oh dude you gotta do it and write a ludicrously sensationalist article to go with it. Then we'll put it on N4G and Digg and the site will be over-run with tards.

Oh...

Dang, the vid had 251 views within the hour of uploading. Included a link back to AATG on the Youtube page.

Oh, and sorry to all the offended groups around the world - Hell awaits me. :)

Haha. I did consider suggesting that it might be worth an news article as I can imagine it brings a few visitors. :-)

NY ... I'm not saying that some devs should or shouldn't apologise. I can imagine some groups demanding one. For this group to demand one seems odd. If you're a member of the "I shook my baby to death" self help group, you're not exactly a victim. You're a baby killer.

Now teh babies. Yes. They could theoretically be upset but then .. they're babies.

I suppose, but for every one baby killer there's loads of domino-victims in the family. I think it's them who'd ask for an apology, if anyone.

Just a random thought: you know what? We're cool with killing pedestrians in GTA.

Just throwing it out there.

I love that song. :)

1800 views, whoop. Bloody good time for Digg to go down, though. Instead of the link back to AATG working, like it should, it just goes to a "sorry, Digg's down" page.

The vid is now featured on fourms the world over! Yay!

Betcha a tenner if VG247 cover it, they won't link to us ;P

BTW I avoid the pedestrians in GTA unless they're really really bloody stupid.

Well, to be fair, it's not as though the footage* or story is original. I don't think we're owed a link-back for a story we didn't break :)

I avoid pedestrians too, but I do think a lot of gamers are calling these guys "sick bastards" without remembering that they battered a virtual hooker to death a few months before.

*let me be clear, actually: that's not my hand. Though it is a nice hand, I must say.

If you google for 'babyshaker ipod' we're #1 via Digg.

:D

Also, anecdotal evidence of the success of this, my mate must have heard about this story on the radio and just searched for it on YouTube and found your video, came into my office and asked if I made it as it's fucking brilliant.

By pure coincidence.

Interesting moral debate on this going on over at touch arcade. I don't know what to make of the "game's" defenders falling back on the "Oh but you shoot people in Brothers in Arms - those people were babies once, so how is it any different?"

On that basis, where do you draw the line? Touch-enabled rape sim? Guantanamo Bay Torture game (actually there is one of those already but not linking it here).

I dunno, spose being a dad makes me super twitchy about this shit but I'll stick with the line that anyone who finds it funny or entertaining or has it on their iPhone / iPod touch has a bit of a screw loose :)

York, you are a fucking genius :D

Nice spot Salaman.

Hairy, you have to make a banner for this and stick it all over the front page :D

It made me laugh lots, I still think it'd be a better game if the picture changed to a broken baby after shaking, instead of those red 'x's.

Just me?

Oh.

Completely unrelated to the app, but one of our 4th year project students is running a project to determine tissue damage caused by shaking a baby. You should see the test rig for the experiment, it's horrible..

Even if you complete disregard it's very dubious message as a game in itself it's just crap.

Why would anyone pay 99 cents for something like that?

Add in the fact it's fucking distasteful subject matter and you have something that it boggles the mind ever got out of the programmer's head and into reality.

I guarantee the sole reason would be to show it to your mates and have a naughty giggle over it.

peej: See, I prefer my GTA comparison, as in that one you really can go kill innocent people without any storyline justification, and you can do it by bludgeoning them with a freakin' baseball bat.

And there are rape games. Obviously they cause a similar reaction and such a game would be pulled from the appstore, too, but there's just something about the baby killing that's striking an emotional cord with people.

I'm just playing devil's advocate, though. I wouldn't bother with the app (perhaps if it were free my curiosity might tempt me) but I do think that a lot of the gamers calling "sicko" at this game are the same gamers who don't mind the violence in a lot of games, and even defend gaming when people like Jack Thompson/Keith Vaz run their mouths, and I think those gamers need to explain why they aren't hypocrites.

Yeah, no joke, search baby shaker ipod in any configuration and my vid pops up in the Google results, like 3rd or 4th. Which is freaky as the vid I got the footage from has been up way longer and has about 50,000 views. I guess the kids just like Metro Station.

The AATG story is probably via digg.com as I linked back to AATG from Youtube via one of those cute little digg.com short URLs.

Thing is, AATG's URLs are way too long, dude. I mean, they contain the entire freakin' title!

I wish it were over a less morbid subject matter, but I'll take that :)

The longer URLs are for a reason! You can actually remove the title=EXTRAORDINARILY_LONG_ARTICLE_TITLE from it and it still works, as long as it has article_id=3453452 etc it'll be just fine.

Not if you're consistent with the URL.

I'll consider removing it from V3.0 - it's in because it's good for the search engines. Apparently.

Just saw the vid - who came up with the AATG jingle then? Like it. :)

Definitely funny seeing the logo on a video with 6k views though, I'm guessing it must have increased page hits by quite a bit.
