:D

FF would be so much better with that sort of dialogues.

I'm assuming the black dude, at least, will end up sounding pretty similar :)

Looks like he's the goofy comic relief character.

Maybe I'm stereotyping about Japanese racism, but it doesn't strike me that Japanese devs and black characters will ever mix too well. :O

I never had a response as to whether anyone wanted to run through the demo and provide a write up for the site?

The theme for the Western release will be sung by Leona Lewis.

Some Japanophile fans are getting worked up because this means the original Japanese theme won't be included.

I prefer understanding the lyrics and having a big name attached, but that's just me.

I'm a bit confused by the choice of Leona Lewis, TBH. Still, if it helps it come out sooner here then all the better

First European cover to diverge from the Japanese style, I believe.

I'm not too fussed, but if you're a Japanophile with OCD, this will make you tear your hair out.

Okay, this one's worth checking out :P

FFXIII is almost comically linear. (Check this map! Site is NS4W)

Criticisms levelled at the game by a very honest gamer:

The whole game is completely linear until halfway through [approximately 20 hours].

There are hardly any towns.

The party is always fixed. The whole game just repeats the movie-battle sequence over and over [In fact the progression is closer to movie-run-battle-run-movie-boss-movie-run-battle…].

There are rather a lot of movies.

Moving around is like a long marathon.

The whole game system is just a clone of FF10.

You can’t flee battles [You can’t avoid most battles either as there is no sneaking past enemies, including weak ones].

Your party is completely healed after each battle.

If the main character in your party dies it is game over [There are only ever 3 characters in battle, often less, and often fixed].

The best tactic is almost always endlessly attacking. There is next to no strategy or skill involved.

The summons’ transformation scenes are a joke [i.e. Odin turning into a horse].

The story is rubbish… [Spoilers omitted, but complaints centre on Snow’s constant and cringe inducing insistence that he is a hero and will “protect” whatever it is the antagonists are menacing this time]

Shopping is only done at “online” shops on save points, with no proper shops to be found.

However, this doesn’t matter as you hardly ever get any money [and you can never buy anything more powerful than what you already looted].

There have been next to no changes from the demo.

The status screen displays no real information.

There are only 8 items usable in combat [For that matter, there are hardly any weapons or accessories, and the “crafting” system mostly consists of spending drops to upgrade their 2 stats].

There are no levels.

Oh dear :O

Yikes that sounds dreadful.

I need to get back to FF12, though I might get an English language copy to make it a bit more easy going.

TBH all those criticisms are a relief to me.

I've always preferred the games for their story*, and the less technical stuff I have to worry about, the better. Multiple paths irritate my gamer-OCD.

Reviewed today on Gamecentral.

Not quite what I was expecting... although I have to agree with York to an extent, I think it may actually be better suited to me, I've really gone off JRPG mechanics recently.

Yeah, I'm more suited for this type of thing where I don't have to worry about micromanagement, or being screwed over by bad decisions.

The only thing that really has me worried is this supposed "20 hour tutorial" everyone keeps talking about. FFXII had a freakin' long tutorial section as well.

But again, the main draw for me is the whole spectacle, the gloss, the production values. Ever since FFVII, I've always been a cutscene-to-cutscene player :)

Same here. There are quite a few games where I'd almost gladly cut out all of the gameplay and just experience the story, as you said above really, I don't know why I don't just watch a film :)

FF is one of those series where I've always wanted to enjoy them but I've only ever found them to be plodding, clumsy attempts at an RPG. The mix of gameplay and cutscenes doesn't work for me, either one on its own would probably be fine.

Cutscenes longer than those in the God of War, Darksiders or Uncharted games are generally nothing more than irritating, especially when the quality of the story is so weak in 99% of games. It's not a masterpiece in those but at least it's fun and interesting.

After reading plenty of reviews and comments I took the plunge and bought FFXIII today. Not sure if it was a wise decision as I've never played a JRPG before let alone a FF game!

I think what tempted me to finally give this genre a try was the fact that quite a large chunk at the start of FFXIII seems aimed a newcomers like myself. It is definitely a world away from the type of game I usually go for.

I look forward to my first ride on a Chocobo ;-)

From what I've read FFXIII is a radical departure for the series, and JRPGs in general, though. In fact it's more of an action game now apparently.

The Edge review (5, incidentally) reckons you have to put around 20-25 hours into the game before you actually get to properly play it. And I thought FFXII started slowly!

Just not interested, particularly as Mass Effect 2 arrived this week and that's compelling almost from the moment you switch it on.

Still, Square-Enix made a similarly inauspicious start on the PS2 with FFX and they finished that generation with FFXII so here's hoping that FFXV (in about 5 years time) is a world of awesome...

Unfortunately FFXIII has more development ties to FFX than FFXII, which'll explain it.

The director from FFX-2 returns to direct this game, and wrote the story.

The battle director from FFX returns as battle director (and it shows).

The director of FFX returns as a producer.

The co-composer of FFX is the composer for this game.

You can thank Yasumi Matsuno for FFXII (and FF Tactics and Vagrant Story), but he bowed out of the development of FFXII midway due to "health issues" (I think there's an implication of a falling out) and subsequently left Squeenix altogether. He was last seen as a "story developer" on Madworld for the Wii :)

I'm really tempted by this, having never played a FF game as JRPG's don't really do it for me. The production on this looks immense though, and I know the mrs would show an interest too.

What are the battles like? Are they more Zelda, or turn based?

So far I am really enjoying FFXIII.

The production values are fantastic, but if you don't like numerous cut scenes this isn't the game for you ;-)

The game does ease you into proceedings and by the time you get to chapter 3 (which took me 3 hours) you'll have been given tutorials on the full range of combat and character upgrade systems. This is just the beginning though as it is going to take you hours to unlock all the different abilities on offer.

So far the game has been very linear in it's design, but that hasn't been a problem for me. After hammering ME2 and Dragon Age it is nice to play a game where you can focus on the story and not worry about searching every inch a the world in case you miss something important.

Also I knew the game was going to be linear and this being my first FF game I didn't have any expectations of what it should be like. The game is definitely getting the thumbs from me and I'm glad I took a chance on it.
