Controversial statement time; I didn't rate SMG as highly as almost everyone else did.

I thought it was good, but the wow factor didn't last long for me. I thought it was like playing mini-game levels for a whole game. I much preferred Mario 64 and also Super Mario Sunshine. I didn't suffer with the camera in that like so many others seemed to (which appeared to be the main reason so many people disliked it) and it was just an all round better package for me.

That trailer had me feeling nostalgic. I wish I hadn't sold SMG :(

Bee Mario is back! Yaaaay!

Wish it were on the PS3, though. Call me a trophy whore, but I dread spending such a long time on a game with no tracked achievements. How do Wii owners cope with their console being so offline?

Hum, personally I thought Mario Galaxy was a return to form after Sunshine, which I felt was a bit lacklustre and lacking in 'spark'. It's true that some of Galaxy's levels were a bit short and veered a bit too often in the direction of being gimmicky but it was so rich in imagination and enthusiasm that it was difficult to be that bothered about such minor problems. I also found it had a hell of a lot more memorable moments than Sunshine, which I struggle to recall any of at all, apart from the Koopa battle on the rollercoaster, and even that was a bit annoying. :/

The one thing I really found disappointing in Galaxy was the hub world - even compared to the hub in Sunshine, the hub for Galaxy was tiny and really lacking in much in the way of hidden stuff. And both pale in comparison to the genius of Mario 64's castle.

The Galaxy music though... utterly awesome. Anyone know if the soundtrack ever got released over here?

I'm a great fan of Mario Sunshine too, but the fact is Galaxy is a much more polished and refined game. SMS had difficulty spikes, buggy levels, lack of imagination at times (fighting the exact same Shadow Mario boss on every level FTL), had those blue coins - a great idea which encouraged exploration, but not when some of them were 'hidden' in stupid places - and was overall clearly a bit of a rushed job. The good parts were very, very good though (mainly those classic void levels) and I loved the setting and atmosphere, which is why I was able to overlook some of the other flaws the first time I played it.

Anyway... back to SMG2, for which my excitement level is ridiculously high. As I've said (quite a few times) in the EG thread I really hope they use it as an opportunity to improve on the first game, instead of just making it more of the same. The hub, for example, really has to go.

Media summit trailer. June 11th release.

I tried not to watch the trailer, but I couldn't resist. Plenty of new ideas in there, and the levels shown in the video seemed trickier and more intimidating... good stuff.

Typically over-the-top box art. Love it. :)

That's it: media blackout time. Probably won't get it until after the World Cup, though.

Notice the starred letters in the logo?

Some guy at Nintendo actually had to deliberately change it from the first game. Which means Nintendo were all to aware of the original hidden message :D

Same here; I completed all the standard levels but that was enough for me. I doubt I'll be buying SMG2 for more of the same, no matter how wonderful EDGE think it is.

I absolutely adored Galaxy 1, it was justso utterly stuffed full of joy and brilliant ideas, was constantly surprising and endlessley playable.

Can't wait for this, and it's been quite a while since I've said that about a game, actually. :)

^^ Nice subtle backhanded compliment, there. ;)

Edit: That was obviously aimed at NY, but the post took too damn long to write (I got preoccupied, okay?)

That desire to experiment is this astonishing game’s most dangerous achievement. As the adventures soars onwards, its various spaces become increasingly warped, and the final levels switch the emphasis from perfecting the 3D platformer to deconstructing it.

:O

I know Edge can be prone to hyperbole - particularly when it comes to Nintendo games - but I'm now confident that this will indeed be the super-awesome improved sequel that I was hoping for.

The question on everyone's lips: will ilmaestro finally get around to actually playing the first game, and not simply listening to the orchestral soundtrack?

I loved the whole Bee bit.

And it's easily the prettiest Wii game.

Speaking of which, Jett Rocket seems to have been heavily influenced by SMG and, although not quite as pretty, looks amazing for a WiiWare game.

Good grief, along with stuff like Lost Winds, you have to wonder why WiiWare stuff can look that delicious, when the majority of Wii mainstream boxed releases look like this

Jesus. If that video had Mario as the main character you could quite easily convince me that it a trailer for SMG.
