Does anyone have a better design/suggestion?

They are to replace scores out of ten.

I guess Jaffa Cakes would look equally as gash (though half a jaffa cake would look good as a half score)

I don't object to the stars in principle, just the graphic. How about replacing the stars with 5 AATG logos?

Don't remember which mage it was (ACE possibly), but it had a different picture for each score, 5 was Mutts Nutts with a picture of a dog licking it's bollocks, it was great.

ACE scored out of 1,000, so it was unlikely to be them :)

I think that might've been FHM or Nuts. Or possibly Zoo

I'm trying to encourage more people to write stuff and I think there's a certain stigma associated with a score out of ten that means you have to write more. So hopefully 5 stars will make people more inclined to contribute.

Also, the 5 star system tends to work better.
3 is average, 4 is good, 5 is SUPERAWESOMES.

Has anyone else ever heard of this stigma? I haven't!

Erm, keep the stars, if you want, but perhaps use more conservative ones (less cartoony).

Really? Then what's the point of the five word reviews + scores then? ;)

Also, it's true that it obviously is easier to rate out of five than out of ten, but to be honest that's not exactly the hardest part of writing a review. :)

But bigger! And maybe with the (big) word "Score:" next to it, because they're kinda just sitting naked at the bottom the moment. :)

If I had my way it'd be the method that Monty Python used to grade youth hostels in their papperbok. ie 5 pairs of breasts if the landlady's likely to jump all over you as soon as the lights go out.

How about general-style stars, like the ones on vyvyan's head in The Young Ones ?

I must admit I preferred the rating out of 10, but there you go, and it never made me feel as though I had to write more (see W&G: Flight of the Bumblebees review).

Quick question though, have you rounded up all of the in-between scores to the stars above them? For example a '7' becomes a '4 star'? Asking because my Battlestations: Pacific review is now a 4 star, and if we're using 5 as a score now, I'd only give it a 3. A four star rating is out of context with the review, as I would imagine most 7's would be.

I'd recommend anything 1-3 gets a 1*, 4-5 gets a 2*, 6-7 gets a 3*, 8-9 gets a 4* and 10 gets a 5*.

Do we need a score guideline as well, especially if we want more people to contribute? I would argue that a '3' shouldn't be average (it's very non-descriptive as a word), instead it should be 'good but flawed'.

My stab at it:

5* = Instant buy. Better than sex with Shakira and without the risk of getting a pube stuck between your teeth

4* = Highly recommended and good value for money. One of the better examples of its genre.

3* = Approach with caution. Some may get a lot of enjoyment out of it, but there's either not enough content or too many flaws to recommend it to everyone.

2* = Mediocre. Unless you see it excessively cheap, it's not worth adding to your collection.

1* = Remember that missing pube from the 5* rating? Well this is like flossing with it.

/not to be taken seriously, just to give an example

Maybe we should have half-stars (which technically allows you to rate out of ten, while still getting rid of this "stigma").

Says empire:

5 = Classic
4 = Excellent
3 = Good
2 = Fair
1 = Tragic

KM - you're right, I rounded them up and in hindsight should round them down.

I'm in a quandary at the moment to be honest. I still maintain that 5 stars is the way to go but it seems the majority of you guys prefer the out of ten rating.

As ever though, the problem with that is that everything is either a 7 an 8 or a 9 and there's not really any in-between. I personally believe the whole range would be used more if we rated out of 5.

I'd prefer an out of 5 rating personally and definitely no half marks. Ideally I'd prefer an out of 3 really- don't buy, buy if you like and definitely buy :)

With a five star rating I will probably always have the LBP definition of them in my head.

5 - Must play
4 - Very good
3 - Worth playing
2 - Needs work
1 - Not recommended

I prefer 5 over 10 to be honest.

My 10s rating goes like this anyway:
9, 10 Very good
7,8 Good
5,6 Alright, don't buy if you are not sure about it
3,4 Don't buy.
1,2 What did they think?!

PS: Out of three would be a bit too limited, in my opinion.
3 - Buy
2 - Rent
1 - Forget

I'm cool with 5. Means I only have to take one shoe and sock off to work out which little piggy gets to go to market.
