Wow. It seems even when I try to stay away from EG I'm never far away from rubbing someone up the wrong way. Have had my own personal Darkfall moment courtesy of a review I wrote (a really bad and hurried review admittedly but a review nonetheless) of Shatter for another site. For giggles and shits, here's the site / link and some of the comments (particularly enjoyed the "You need a new career" one):

Shatter review

Sort of related to Rich's front page smash hit of late, the stuff about games journalism and its decline, it made me think long and hard about why the fuck I bother to write reviews. Part of it is about sharing something I'm passionate about. Part of it is a bit of a sales pitch particularly in the case of a game you've loved to bits / hated the sight of, and trying to win people over into buying it / experiencing it for themselves or avoiding wasting their money on it. In the case of Shatter, I thought it was a relatively slick but utterly soulless take on brick breakers and aside from rez-like visuals and a by the numbers soundtrack, it all felt like something I'd seen way too many times before (perhaps that's another problem, I've been playing games for too damned long so very few games feel fresh and amazing any more).

So whaddaya think, trusted AATGers?

(background info. Played the game for about 3.5 hours. Have been spending a lot of time playing better and more exciting stuff and also juggling looking after a sick missus / daughter this week so the review couldn't have come at a worse time).

Do people just not like reading anything negative about games any more?

I refer you to John Gabriel's Internet dickwad theory.

Although, to be fair even though your circumstances were unfortunate, I think they may have had a point :-s Even the shit games need playing, I got through about 50 levels on Hysteria Hospital..

I've added a comment, so hopefully it gets through.

Anyways: haters gonna hate. And the Internet is made for haters.

In their defence, you give the context for how much time constraint and stress you were under here, but they can't be expected to know that, and they're reading the review from the perspective of "will I enjoy this game at my leisure, if I take my time with it."

It's like saying a movie is awesome but neglecting to mention you watched it while high.

And I can definitely sympathize with their frustration: I think back to the EG review of Resi 4 Wii Edition. Now, obviously, the review was just the reviewer's opinion, and he's entitled to it. But when he's spouting his opinion with an air of authority and I, the lowly reader, disagree with it venomously, there is an element of "and who the frick are you, and who made you king of scoring this awesome game?"

Finally: the internetz are clearly serious business ;)

Plus, how seriously can you take a guy who writes "Are you really play the game?"?

I don't see how a bad review of Shatter could fail. The game's utter crap, doing nothing new with the concept

Added a comment too. Should appear soon :P

It's not a real criticism but you do seem to take comments a bit too much to heart. As long as you believe what you've written then I see no reason why you would have an issue with it, it's not like internet people tend to be the most rational or intelligent.

Excluding AATGers, of course. They could all rule the world.

I've read the review peej and I can't see much wrong with it.

You didn't like the game because you found it too repetitive, which can often happen with this style of game.

As Micro said earlier I do think you take the critical comments too much to heart. You will always get people who will criticise your review especially when you give a game a low score. This being the internet most of that criticism will be less than constructive!

As long as you enjoy writing the reviews that is all that matters, since you are doing it as a hobby.

Cheers all (and loved NY's comment - mind you, you should see the ones they DIDN'T let through)

Cheers to Micro for backing me up. TBH I would admit that I didn't put as much effort into reviewing Shatter as I could've - and DD's probably right, you should play through even shitty stuff to the bitter end just to ensure you're not missing anything, but after nearly 4 hours I couldn't face any more. It was just so bloody mundane.

Anyway, just done a Fat Princess review for 'em. Bet no fucker comments on that.

Douche bag! You suck at life!

Sorry, wrong website.

I actually can't remember the last time I visited a site to read game reviews. I'll pick up the occasional mag - but the only place I actually read other people's thoughts is this site's front page. I like hearing what you fellas think, but that's about it. I seem to have fallen out of sync with the rest of the internet. (Which, with my gaming tastes, isn't hard, obviously.)

Ditto. An opinion expressed here on AATG (or in some cases, on the EG forum) is worth ten of any review.

I was a little harsh on you there peej. I guess what I really mean is it's understandable if you don't want to play a shit game for a long time... Just don't be surprised if someone sees through it.

"OMG What do you mean you didn't see the final boss on Generic WWII shooter #32mil??? That's when it gets good, you n00b, you haven't played the game."

Maybe I missed something great in Officers, or even Hysteria Hospital... But I would be damned if I were to play them any more to find out!

Aye. I guess it's the danger of writing for sites that don't have a reasonable set of editorial guidelines - though we don't really have 'em here at AATG and we seem to do OK (mainly because we seem to have fallen under the tard radar so far).

It's back to the old argument - should a review be timely and put up as quickly as possible while the game's still relevant? Or should someone chunk through the whole thing before putting pen to paper? With something like Shatter - a PSN Arcade Title - I doubt I'd have found some earth-shattering (tee hee) amazing gameplay dynamic that would've changed my views.

For a bit more background info - the site were contacted by the developers to ask why the reviewer was so down on it, but they didn't let me reply to them directly - and just shot out a second opinion piece that gave the game 9/10 rather than 4/10. Amazingly not one person commented on that review saying "that's more like it, great job, at least you played it" - could it be that people just like whingeing? :)

If I see a good score for a game I'm looking forward to, I don't bother commenting on the reviewer: it'll be more a comment like "can't wait for this game".

If I disagree, then yes, the reviewer's suddenly a tard. Though the only time I've cared enough to say so was with the Resi 4 Wii review on EG. If they'd given it a good score, I wouldn't have complemented the reviewer. What the heck do I care about the reviewer?

How stupid am I? I came into this thread expecting to read about a game called "My Own Personal Darkfall".

Take no notice Peej. You shouldn't have to play a game like Shatter for 20 hours to be able to write a proper review.

Meh, Breakout isn't that fun in the first place (unless there's a naughty pic behind the bricks, of course: that's always fun).

Any YouTube link to the supposedly terrible music?

That's just it, I didn't actually say the music was terrible, just that it was like the demo tune on a casio organ.

Bit soulless...

Officially replied to the commenters at the behest of the chief (a decent chap by the name of Neil who basically said "let 'em eat cake"). Wonder if I'll end up with a jihad after that...

I can review 90% of games from half an hour of play. Not that I would ever do that for AATG but if the designers haven't worked out that the opening is the most important part of bringing you into the game.

Some, like Bioshock, obviously need more.

one thing that I really enjoyed was how liberal Shatter was with extra lives. It seemed like every time that I got killed I was able to earn an extra life really quickly which was definitely appreciated

Then of course there was a boss battle with the “Xenon Queen” which definitely kicked my butt on my first attempt.

The developers kept things unique and challenging enough where nothing ever seemed really repetitive.

having an extra life here and there will definitely help your cause.

From unique and creative levels to really fun boss fights it is a really solid package and a game that everyone should definitely experience.

I really hope this game does well as I would love to see a sequel

Arrrgh you have a really limited vocabulary which definitely sucks.
