I am :(

I don't think that factors in to how close a shave I can get, though :s

The only way to get a proper close shave is to shave against the grain - i.e. upwards. Yes, it's not recommended (especially if you have sensitive skin), but that's just the way things work.

I recently switched to a new regime that works for me. After shower, soak beard in hot water, and then spread a few drops of KoF oil all over the face. Then use KoF shave gel on top, before carefully shaving upwards using Mach3 (no need for more blades imo). Finish by rinsing with cold water, and then applying moisturiser. Aside from the odd nick, it's resulted in super-smooth irritation-free shaves for me, and I've got super-sensitive and dry skin (hence the need for moisturiser). I do it every three days, usually.

HairyArse said:I use those Gillete Mach 4 shavers and they make my face feel like a baby's bottom. Admittedly Ionly have to shave once a fortnight.

How on earth do you get away with that? Any longer than three days and I start to look like a tramp.

Yeah, I always go against - it's the only way it even seems to work.

I concur with the oil + foam approach, but I've recently switched from using a Gillette Mach 3 Turbo to a Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 and am loving it. Oddly, the 'hydro' feature after which it's named, is pretty useless but I get a great shave and the blades last for ages (thank fsck, 'cos they're not cheap).

Wilko razors cut me to pieces.

I've tried various makes but Gillette seem to be the only ones that don't knacker my face to pieces.

Still going with the shaving oil though the Mach 5 gel is pretty good stuff. Just ridiculously expensive

I'm fully bearded at the moment, but if I ever cut any beard off completely I just take the guard off my beard trimmer. Wet shaving gives me a neck rash.

I just use Tesco Triple blade razors and cheap shaving foam. Works perfectly well and doesn't require me to remortgage my house.

Yeah, I never suspected the problem was in the blades or the foam. Blades are blades are blades, and foam is foam is foam.

I think it's my technique that is lacking. :s

I disagree; I've used plenty of disposables in my time and have never liked any of them. Also can't stand the King Of Shaves 'Azor' which at first glance is quite cleverly designed, until you try using it to remove hair from chin. Not a fan of the old-fashioned, single-bladed 'safety razor' either - it's tricky to keep the angle correct (although I'm sure this improves with practice) and shaving seems to involve going over the same bit again and again and again...

Remembered this thread while shaving this morning so took note of my, er, 'technique': it turns out I generally shave with the grain, then go back shave against it under the neck to finish off. As I said, with a Hydro 5 and some gel, this gets me a pretty good daily shave and cartridges last me between two and three weeks (I struggled to make Mach 3s last a fortnight).

Problem solved!

I just popped a new set of blades in. I guess the previous set were getting a bit old.

Perfect shave! Whoop!

Gilette and Wilkinson razors aren't that great. You should look to one of these:

Upfront cost is high but the blades cost next to nothing and last longer. It's almost impossible to cut yourself, despite how they look.

Technically, we all are. Except Peej. If this was 200 years into the future he'd be incarcerated on the Alien3 prison planet for having two X chromosomes.

Hair related. Just had my hair cut (sorry Peej ;-) ) after leaving it for 4 months. Number 2 at the back and sides. Came home, looked in the mirror and I have a dirty great solitary hair growing out the top of my ear. Its about 2 inches long and is usually hidden by my normal hair.

Should I leave it or give it a good plucking?

btw really really no need to apologise for having hair, talking about hair, being hirsute. I really don't miss it. I did really stupid things with it and I looked ridiculous with hair. Trust me.

One of the senior partners at work has something similar growing flush to his nose. it sprouts about a third of the way down his nose and ends just before the tip. Ever since I saw it I can't unsee it or look anywhere else :(

That's called the Car Accident Syndrome (or CAS), you know there is an accident a few meters in front of you and you promise you won't look, but you can stop looking when you pass it!

Going slowly bald since 16, but lucly my body decided to compensate me by giving me more and more and more chest and back fur to a point I really hated tha made me start waxing it off!

My beard usually goes from perfectly made to people giving spare change in the street lenght... :(
