Hold on, I know this mostly not be a new idea, but I don't recall ever seeing a 'rewind' function in driving games.

Come on! Seriously? Forza 3 was an insta-buy for me until I read that you can rewind and re-drive if you took a bad corner, or whatever.

This is all kinds of wrong, isn't it? Especially in a game being classed as a Sim.

Dunno whether in game you'll be penalised for it in terms of points/prizes but I think its proper good fun as its reteaching me the art of proper driving games after too long at Burnout and Ridge Racer :)

Obviously it wont work online. If they did it instead of rubberbanding, it would be a very good idea but from playing forza 3, it seems to be as well as....

I disagree. That rewind feature is just one of the many reasons why I'm thinking of pre-ordering Forza 3 - amongst other things it's a very useful learning tool. You have to remember that it won't compromise time trials (as 'rewound' races will still place lower than slower normal times), not sure how it'll be implemented in SP arcade/career mode though.

And no, not the first time it's been used - I think GRID was the first one to use rewinds, but apparently Dirt 2 and NFS: Shift also have the feature.

Didn't GRiD or one of the other Codemasters recent (2007/2008) TOCA games do that as well ?

EDIT - beaten to it by Kay !

It says something about the world's attention-deficit gamers where a track's apex, break-points and driving lines were learnt over time and careful driving.

It's just another dumbing-down of games, isn't it? I can see what you are learning by re-playing the same turn over and over, but what you are not learning is more subtle: You're not learning the skills to quickly reason and spot the above in a track.

Yeah GRiD was to my knowledge, the first racing game to implement this - and it was brilliantly done in GRiD. It's also now in DiRT2 but to me - and I need to re-evaluate GRiD to see if it's identical - it seems somewhat clunky and clumsy. But, I'd still rather have it in than not.

Personally, if I fucked a race up on the first corner, I used to hit reset on my console and load it up again if it wouldn't let me quit to the menu, and I've done that since the PS1 days. Like I said, if the rubberbanding is such that it wont make a difference, theres little point in having/using a feature like this but on time trial stuff if it saved me restarting, I'd be happy :)

Grid was the first game to have it, Dirt2 continued with it and Forza 3 borrows it as well.

I think it's one of the best innovations in driving games for years. Far too many times I've made silly mistakes near the end of a race and had to redo do everything, which can be bloody tedious.

On the highest difficulty levels in Grid and Dirt2 you have zero flashbacks as well.

Forza's implementation isn't the same as the Codie's titles though, there's less fine control over where you rewind to but you can at least keep going back in time rather than the short window you have in CM's. Another difference is that any use of rewind in this game negates your time for leaderboards.

Well okay then. You all seem to be fans of it, maybe I'll give it a go.
