Sorry to ask such a question on a Sunday, but i figured this would be the easiest way to get a few more respondents before I have to hand in the assignment later this week. :-)

So, what does democracy mean?

Democracy means that rather than having traditional methods of choosing a leader (occasionally based on ability, judgement and suitability for leadership), a country is left with the person that knows how to manipulate the media and the population to get put in charge.

The British system is slightly better in that the person has to have managed to get through their party through back handed deals and occasionally their ability. The American system is nearly always a popularity contest/smear campaigns and rarely is a good person elected.

Both countries are so open to corruption through 'secret societies', gentleman's clubs and lobbyists that the concept of democracy doesn't truly exist in either instance.

Democracy, despite the nice side of it (people being given they're important in the whole process) is a terrible system. In some ways dictatorships are much better but that's dependent on the dictator being someone who wants to do the right thing and does it. Someone who isn't open to corruption and does listen to their people but doesn't believe it's about popularity.

The traits required to be a dictator often rule this out from happening.

In summary, democracy means having the person in charge being someone with strong political connections and a pretty face who can say what people want to hear and do what the people with money want them to do. It's a massive compromise that may or may not be worth the obvious benefits.

Thank you.
By the way, what you wrote is more or less what I think democracy is these days (Not that it ever was much better).

No, that would have been more than fine as well. :)
I just need to link your answers later to different theories of democracy or say that they can't be linked. So any answer is a useful answer.

I agree in that I don't think it has ever been much better than now it's just that the media interference is so much more obvious now (whether it has more or less of an impact than in the past, I dunno). There is too much focus on soundbites and dumbing it down to the lowest common denominator rather than assuming the audience knows something or can think for themselves.

Democracy consists of choosing your dictators after they've told you what you think it is you want to hear
-Alan Coren

Under democracy, one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove the other party is unfit to rule - and both commonly succeed, and are right.
-H.L.Mencken

Democracy. The perfect example of why anyone who WANTS to be elected to office probably shouldn't be.

Rule by vocal minority?

Why else do we have more disabled bays than Parent and Toddler parking in supermarkets?

Don't ever get me started on those spaces. We don't bother calling them Parent and Baby / Disabled parking bays, we call them BMW / Audi / SUV Owner spaces (Non disabled, and too fucking pig ignorant and ugly to ever be parents)
