I'm trying not to choke with rage at the fact that someone's taken up Douglas Adams' mantle, let alone that it's Eoin (kiddybook) Colfer but for those interested, Radio 4 are doing a reading tonight with Stephen Mangan and Peter Serafinowicz:

Choke down your bitterness

Might be alright.

I enjoyed the Artemis Fowl books a lot better than Harry Potter. Mixed feelings about Colfer handling H2G2 though, but I am kind of looking forward to it. Out today, isn't it?

I'd agree Colfer's a far better writer than JK Rowling but he's going to have to go some to match Adams' superbly observational wit and subtle hilarity.

Serafinowicz as the velvety voice of the book is a good move though.

Adams couldn't do plot to save his life though- his books are the written equivilent of Monty Python and the Holy Grail- a lot of hilarious set pieces with a terrible story tying them together.

After the third book yeah I'll give you that, but that is tantamount to a treasonous statement all the same. Bah, thread needs more Boo in it :)

Oh I love his stuff dearly and the dictionary gag in the first Dirk Gently novel is unsurpassed imho but he went the route of getting more interested in emerging media than staying with writing books as there was less pressure on delivering a product :)

(Much like George RR Martin has done)

Love 'im or hate 'im though, I don't think I'd trust anyone else to pick up where he left off. Then again I'm not a big fan of modern authors taking on the classics and doing sequels either.

Slight interest in this to see how good a job Colfer does but it's still sacrilege :)

I wouldn't count myself as a fan (the most I've ever done with any HHGG media is read a bit of the first book, which I did enjoy), so take this opinion with a pinch of salt, but I tried listening to the first episode of this new sequel, and it was terrible.

On the iPlayer, up till Monday.

The last few Douglas Adams books were pretty incoherent and shitty though tbh.

But better than this, far better.

I ended up listening to all 5 book for bed time instalments on the iPlayer. It seems like a fan-fiction piece, name checking as many aspects from the previous books as possible.

It's a shame because reading the interview Colfer did on b3ta made me more positive than I had hoped to be.

Aye, I read that but gotta agree, far too much "feelgood" name checking in there without actually bothering to add anything to the series at all.

What a shame, had been keeping half an eye on this since I first heard about the project. What are Eoin Colfer's main books like, anything one should have a look at?
