Finally cracked the cellophane on my copy yesterday. Only put about an hour into it - I just wanted to dip my toes in as I've actually got Batman Arkham Asylum to finish first. Managed to do the tutorial, check out the Nexus and set foot into Boletarian Palace. Got about ten minutes into the palace then backtracked to the Nexus.

Will put it to one side to complete Batman and IL-2 (only got a couple of hours of each left to do) then I'll get properly stuck in.

So far the atmosphere and the fighting mechanic are very impressive. I never expected the swordplay to be quite as quick and responsive as it is.

I still have this weird RPG-blindness when it comes to anything with a whiff of sword and sorcery in it. I should be looking at this, should be looking at Dragon Age, should be looking at Torchlight but as soon as I see "wizards, beards, swords" the shutters come down.

Haylp!

Cor blimey this is getting good. 9 hours in and currently at soul level 23. Some serious "WTF!!!" set piece moments encountered.

The entrance fee is worth it for the atmosphere alone, but the whole package is extremely rewarding. It is tough but never unfairly so, and the fighting system is responsive enough to give you the right sort of feedback at any particular point.

This is brilliant (and incredibly time-consuming)! :D
The swordfighting (or axe in my case) feels just right and it actually is important to parry or dodge an attack unlike in other games where just press attack repeatedly until the enemy dies.

You really shouldn't play this with the volume turned low, it can cost you your life.

"Ding"

Me: "What's that?"

"Ding!"

Me: o_o

DING!

O_O Wah, a Chtulumonsterthingy!

Ding, ding, ding

The singing voice in that level freaks me out.

Ooh! Gonna be a white Christmas for Demons' Souls fans... the servers are being set to pure white so the game will be a bit easier and all kinds of secret areas will open up.

That's it. I need to get this fucking PS3 back online... even if only for a few days.

Got a new Ps3 and back to this, very good fun. Starting to get the hang of it a bit more now, but need to find a list of what all the icons are on equipment.

Got my shitty PS3 back online for a night and shoved this in... first time I've seen the online implementation.

It's genius! Takes the game so far beyond the (brilliant) single player experience. Got completely hung up on watching all these other phantoms drift in and out of my game, reading messages and tips and the bloody graffiti of other's deaths.

Game of the Year doesn't do this title justice. It's phenomenal.

It is snazzy, I love games like this. It's got the bits of PSO and Too Human I really loved but with deep combat, and a real sense of tension due to there being consequences for failure.

Oh, the tension, yeah, that's what makes it. First time venturing into world 3-1? It's survival horror more than an RPG.

I've been playing the Asian version unpatched up until a couple of nights ago. It was so bastard hard that they tweaked a couple of things. I'm finding it a bit easier now... but I just need to sort Flamelurker so I can start the heavy duty upgrading of my gear.

I'm on the Asian version too, I'd only just got passed 1-1 when my ps3 died. So everything is new to me still.

Gunna try out some of the co-op stuff next time I play.

Managed to beat the Tower Knight after a mammoth Effort. A stack load of arrows got him down to 1/3 health then had to get in and chop at his ankles. Pretty nerve racking running about his legs when it had taken so long to weaken him.

I only the last level of the Boletarian Palace left to do. At some point the game turned into a walk in the park (except for the annoying giant goblins and occasional invader).

Might try to replay this as a magic based character next time.

Bah, hate those black phantoms that for some annyoning reasons only invade me just before I kill a hard enemy I've been trying to overcome for ages. :/

Do the Black Phantoms start at the beginning of the level? I've only met two but never know where they're going to come from and get stabbed in the back.

I think they do. At least they almost always sneak up from behind me. Of course they could have got ahead of me, because they are invisible until they lose some health or come very close, which is why you should never invade with the magic sword makoto equipped.

Heh I've never even seen a magic sword. I'm still using a broadsword. Not enough time to play games at the moment :(

I've only recently freed Freke and seen the mechanical spider.

Finally got it! I'm so psyched. I even got my PS3 fixed for the occasion. I couldn't quite believe it when I saw a wrapped copy on the shelf in my local indie.

Yes, I've missed the boat again, late to the party etc etc.

Ah well, I'm pretty excited to have it. Just played the tutorial, very carefully, up until some boss in a room...who killed me with two quick hits and sent me to the nexus. Was that scripted or did I just get my arse handed to me, Demon's souls style?

I'd like to take it online but it seems I have all manner of updates to negotiate before I can (haven't used my PS3 for a year at least).

It's not scripted, it's just very, very hard to beat that boss.
I guess everyone who plays it for the first time dies there.

What class did you choose?

Knight - it's not too late for me to start again if you advise it though!

I've been playing mages and other classes in RPGs recently, so I wanted to go back to basics and also definitely get involved in some melee action which just looked very satisfying in this; it is.

Good choice or bad choice?

I've never played as a knight, to be honest, but I don't think it's a bad choice. The class you choose is only really of importance for the first few levels (your levels not the levels you play) since you can pretty much evolve your character in whatever way you want. It's of course good to start with a class that has stats you will likely use most later.

Definitely recommend playing while connected to the servers. Not necessarily to play with or against other but rather to see the hints or bloodstains left by other people.

Very useful wiki site should you get stuck.

PS: Use your shield. ;)

Cheers, I used it continually in the tutorial, figured it would come in handy. I also enjoyed the roll, which is slightly less than skilfully executed in all the armour :-D

Update done, dinner eaten, about to go check out the nexus.

I know I should be vaguely ashamed of myself but I'm taking a break and heading to the wiki - some dragons have turned up and I don't want to risk being blazed back to the start at this point... do I head along the ramparts where the guards are and the dragon swoops in or go to the grassy knoll where there seems to be a lot of loot but two dragons?

Having been killed twice by a pike-wielding guard..not a boss but clearly significantly more levelled than the rest...before taking another route, I'm now feeling a bit cautious to say the least.

It's totally living up to expectations so far. I've already become a much better player as a result of replaying the level several times and it's - not yet - a chore. I *love* the fact I wandered off, cut some chains (in response to a message left by some kind soul) and opened up a significant shortcut, should I do and go back to the start. Great atmosphere - strangely focused and spartan, but totally absorbing.

The first is the way forward. You have to be very quick and time your run. ;)
You can always return to the dragons at a later stage to collect whatever you find there, but you will most likely die there if you try to get close to the dragons.

Well, you can go back, but chances are that you will die sooner or later and get back to the start that way. :)

PS: Imo, using a guide for this game is totally acceptable.

Thanks - that's a good wiki too. It was, for one, good to know that I can come back to this later; I'm a bit of a completist so it was frustrating feeling I was leaving areas incomplete. Also, that pike dude is a Red Eye Knight. Or something.

Break over, back to the game. Loving it.
