Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, but still there's time for a thread about all those gaming "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU" moments. What moments of joypad-chucking frustration have you experienced this (or any) year?

Me:

The magic carpet bit in LittleBigPlanet (PSP)

Trying to stop Faith from killing goons in Mirror's Edge (I just cannae do it captain and if I try it makes me want to kill small furry animals)

Leading the pack on Grid on a Le Mans race, only to stuff up the last corner by over-egging the accelerator, with no rewinds left.

You?

I have had so many of those moments in FIFA 10 recently, it's not even funny. I've had great games where I've kept on top of things, defended well, taken all the chances in front of goal etc. only for me to inexplicably fall apart in the next game. Just like real football then, I guess.

Still - when you're suddenly 4-0 nil down in the first twenty minutes, on the back of a 7-8 game losing streak, it's understandable to get a little frustrated. Doubly so when your next opponent decides to ragequit when you're winning 2-0 and actually playing well... I didn't break my disc though, I just sent a complaint to Live. :)

Not quite what you are talking about, but I'd say waving my 360 off to Frankfurt on Monday morning ranks pretty darn high up on the gaming frustration ladder!

This year - the end of the Killer Croc bit in Arkham Asylum. For some reason I was never quite in the right place to trigger the set-piece, so I had to do the last bit of the chase about 8 bloody times.

All time - playing Activision's Ghostbusters for hours on the Spectrum or C64, only to fail to get past the Marshmallow Man to get to the end battle.

From aeons ago, a game called Hero of the Golden Talisman. It was sort of an Indiana Jones type thing, with a little animated blokey running around collecting stuff. For some reason the designer thought it would be funny to have every jump a pixel perfect jump, with the guy falling into a huge drop, then water if you missed the jump. From there you'd have to swim right back to the start, climb a fucking massive ladder, then attempt the jump all over again.

Even describing it now, it makes my blood boil. I remember my little brother describing the game as "the man who falls in the water" game.

GRRRRRRRRNNNN!

Skate is a good candidate for this.

But the most frustrating thing was to lose 30 hours of work on an LBP level.

Oh my yes! Spend an hour making an object, spend another hour making a backdrop. Accidentally glue the object to the backdrop, unglue it...AND THE WHOLE FUCKING THING FALLS APART>

They really ought to release a PC application for that game. Or add mouse/keyboard support.

Mouse support would be lovely. As would image import. Or some sort of clever-dick integration of the same tech in EyePet.

Still, why develop anything like that when you can sell sackboy costumes ad infinitim for 2 squid a pop

Both of these for me, but I'd also add playing GT PSP, in the time trial challenge with a brilliant time, only to get too excited and mess up.

The Dark Daxter bit in the Jak & Daxter: Lost Frontier demo.

Even the greatest games of all time have moments like this.

That fucking piston puzzle in Ico. That stopped me completing the game for about a year.

Ha, thanks for reminding me of that. Never finished Ico because of that. Never will now because I don't have PS2 or old PS3 anymore.

A lot of people have trouble with that.

Fun fact: it's only in the European version!

Know what you mean - I get that with FIFA and PES. Sometimes I'm just not with it or on form. As you say, like real football.

Best rage moment for me was playing a 4 player game of Bust-a-move on the N64 just after Uni. We'd had a long and heavy drinking session, about 16 hours I think, and 3 of us subconsciously started ganging up on my mate. Not known for his patience, he lost it completely, much like a 2 year old would, and jumped onto the sofa and started beating his fists against the wall. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard. A little bit of wee even came out.

I know. I found out how to do it after a lot of trial and error. I just started the game up one day, tried it and accidentally did it on a fluke.

Felt much better afterwards. The rest of the game was a breeze!

I think most of my gaming FFFFuuuuuu... moments this year have come from buying a sequel to a game and realising, very quickly, that I prefered the original. Seems to be happening more and more.

Well, that and powercuts and shitty internet connection dying at bad moments. Oh, and trying to shove a game on to be told I won't be playing it for the next hour because something essential needs to be patched in. Thanks.

Knowing what to do at the end of Uncharted 2 but not having the coordination to do it within a sensible number of restarts (yes, I know its obvious, but that's where the frustration kicks in). Not guite up to the COD4 postcript but still.... nnnnggh. I lost my voice for the day - fortunately I was home alone and the neighbours were at work.

It was also a pretty tired way to end the game (the 'Bioshock' syndrome)...

The end of Resident Evil 5.

SPOILERS AHEAD
--------------

As fucking usual, it comes down to the usual boss fight - this time it's a hepped up Wesker, who can move like a cheap extra from The Matrix, and mutates into a kick ass fuckwad - and fights you and the useless Sheva in a fucking Volcano. Oh did I mention that the game waits till you've got NO FUCKING AMMO LEFT to chuck this at you? Did I also mention that SHEVA IS A FUCKING USELESS FUNTCUCK and keeps dying because she seems to think that the best way to deal with Wesker is to run straight into his open inviting arms and give the twat a cuddle? Did I also mention that the game WAS DESIGNED BY THE SAME LITTLE BASTARDS THAT PUT STRIPS OF BAMBOO UNDER THE FINGERNAILS OF POWs in WWII?

No?

10 quid down the drain. Thank fuck I didn't pay full price or I'd have turned the disk into shiny shards of airgun target.

Seem to be don't I! Though I'm sure St Evas would be a little tricksier with his lingual skills and the swearing would be funnier.

Fuckcunts though, the lot of 'em. If I ever show any signs of being interested in a Resident Evil game in the future, cut my hands off (or more sensibly, cut my cards in half!)

Comedy FU moments usually occur when I'm playing things like MarioKart on the snes with friends.

THe more annoying FFFUUU moments include failing the last time lap challenge in Burnout 3 for the millionth time. You had to get an F1 race round the track on permanent afterburner. One nudge of the railings and that was it. aarrgghhh. Last event I needed to complete. Never did.

Yeah I didn't like that bit either, in fact I think in the end just so I didn't end up stuck like I am with Resi 5 I just dropped the difficulty level and got back into it.

Speaking of Batman, I just had a bit of an FFFU-etc moment myself. I really wish I hadn't read EG's retrospective on the game from just before Christmas, as the very last paragraph spoiled - if I read correctly - what sounded like an absolutely awesome twist. What a truly memorable moment that would have been if I hadn't expected it, but now I'll be waiting for it to happen whilst playing the rest of the game.

Don't want to go there to read it but I'd love to know what that twist was. Having completed it, I can't actually think of anything that was in the game that broke with the comics, or what we know of the characters...

So if you want to stick it on here with spoiler bits either side of it, that'd be ace.

It doesn't sound much like a storyline/character twist as such, more of a gameplay one. Anyway, I'll just quote the bit from the article:

***SPOILER***
But it's the moment where the game freezes, reboots and starts over with Joker as the hero

***SPOILER***

That would have been a real 'wow' moment for me, if I hadn't expected it. Doubly so if it happens in the exact same way as that line describes. :)

Ahhh right, yeah that is an excellent moment.

There are plenty of other mindfucks courtesy of The Scarecrow though, really loved all those bits.
