I can't stop watching the trailers for this - I hate RPGs as most of you know, I can't stand all that dialogue and all that piss-arsing about with stats. And I'm not super keen on elves and goblins either.

But watching the latest trailers for Mass Effect on Live last night, I think I've got the serious horn for this.

It almost looks too good to be true. Mass(hah)ively ambitions, tastier than a whole pack of jaffa cakes, and seemingly a very good mix of action and waffling.

What say you?

I says aye cap'n.

Looks damn tasty to me. Sci-fi GRAW-like action combined with a big sci-fi adventure with pant-wetting graphics - sounds like just the ticket.

I think the only thing that would spoil it is if it's horribly linear.

Hmmm I wouldn't mind that s'long as it's got a fair amount of "free" roaming around as in something like Freelancer...

The character animation and stuff on the hi def trailer really does look spoogetastic tho

I didn't really get on with KOTOR, but Mass Effect looks great. In the videos way you give orders with the action paused looked very sensible.

Must admit this did lose its appeal a bit after the last trailer. Not because it looked too action heavy or anything like that, but because the female character's voice (the one in the shiny white suit) is just horrible!

It does looks lovely though. All my teenage sci-fi fantasies rolled into one game. Well almost all of them.

Yeah, it looks fantastic overall - definitely one I'm going to pick up at launch, barring any disasters.

Regarding linearity etc, I think they've been pimping the idea of travelling throughout the galaxy etc to present the illusion of free-roaming (or wide choice, at least).

I reckon at any one time you'll be able to select numerous planets, space stations and deserted spaceships (some of which will be marked for advancing the story). BUT it'll be a case of clicking on the space map and essentially entering a fairly linear dungeon - maybe less boxed in than KotoR.

That's what my inner pessimist says, anyway. It should still be good - combat looks pretty interesting.

But when are they going to make a real space exploration RPG for consoles, eh? Bastards.

Someone do an updated Starflight please.

Mass Effect may turn out really well but I bet it's a lot more linear than most people will want.

The dialouge in the 'gameplay' movie is pathetic and the acting likewise - as in most games or sci-fi series really..

/loves sci-fi, hates shitty sci-fi like Star Trek and all those series.. (Serenity was ok)

Wouldn't really mind at all if it was linear, as long as there is some freedom how to do things within the linearity, and some exploration.

Exactly, I'm getting a bit tired of 'Linear' being used as a put down for games.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with an invisible guiding hand as long as you enjoy yourself.

..that sounds a bit rude.

Of course, there's still Fallout 3 to look forward to.

And have weird dreams about...

And get all excited about and need a cold shower about...

With Bethesda doing it, it's more like have nightmares about.

And I still want an updated Starflight, one of the greatest games of all time.

Fuck that - I want Bethesda to do a Terminator: Future Shock followup. Still one of the best FPSs ever made IMO.

If you played Jade Empire, combat will be more like that. This game is right at the top of my wishlist, and is the main reason I'm finally caving in and going next-gen. Loved KoTOR and JE, and really looking forward to this.

You didn't get the memo then that a lot of that stuff was place holder done by the team because the voice actors where still in the process of doing their thing?

IGN first hour preview, a bit vacuously written as ever, but I'll have every detail I can get, thanks.

Check out that lovely red dusk screenshot. Sounds like the combat could be a lot of fun, and I love the fact there's a GRAW-esque cover mechanic, albeit a simplified one. I fancy the sound of the adept class, myself.

And as if anyone needed any more convincing: space zombies!
