Does this really annoy anyone else ?
I'm struggling to think of good examples of the top of my head, but it seems most common in the 'urban' genre.

On the radio just now i think a Tinchy Stryder track called 'Take me back', the chorus goes :

"I'm sorry i misleaded you pretty lady,
I'm sorry i mistreated you pretty lady"

Argh.

Spot the man who's never been north of the Watford gap.

Hairy speaks like that ALL THE TIME.

It's frickin' Tinchy Strider, what did you expect? :p

(he's named after the game, btw, fact fans)

Yep, this isn't exactly rare in hip-hop music but you get used to it - they are rappers, after all. For example - one of my all-time favourite rap songs has this bit:

When I dream of fairytales I think of me and Shelly
See she's my type of hype and I can't stand when brothers tell me
That I should quit chasin' and look for something better
But the smile that she shows makes me a go-getter

Can you spot the grammatical error? Didn't even pick up on it until someone pointed it out, tbh.

I think "urban" acts (such a crafty euphemism) have a bit of leeway in terms of dodgy grammar, because who am I to question how the youths talk in Camden? :) As long as the flow is good, it's excusable. Though from what I've heard from Tinchy Stryder, which isn't much, admittedly, he doesn't have much flow at all. He's more like a guy singing in one note, rather than rapping.

But it's very jarring in most songs where you can tell the sentence structure is unnatural just to force a rhyme. To make up an example:

Girl, you should stay with me,
Together, forever, we will always be

EUGH! My made up example fills me with rage!

Should it be "Shelly and I"? :D

"I can't stand (it) when brothers tell me" ?

Being diagnosed as dyslexic I can't always spot bad grammar but I can spot something that reads as slightly jarring, and that does.

But as you say, you can't really just pick on hip hop or urban acts for this sort of stuff. I'm always pleasantly surprised when anyone under the age of 20 can read nowadays, let alone string a sentence together :)

There's some other equally abysmal hip-pop song where the line is something like:

"I never would have knew"

You fucking what?

Also, Timbaland deserves executing for "The way I are".

That's just as pedantic! Can't be it :)

Is it that he confuses dreaming with thinking? Hmm... this is bugging me :)

C'maaan, d00d, that was just for coolness! He didn't even rhyme it with anything!

My type of hype?

And does he mean "go get her" instead of "go-getter".

Yeah, that Timbaland one is clearly deliberate, but why? It still looks stupid. Great song, though.

As for the earlier grammatical error... it's very subtle so I'll just point it out.

But the smile that she shows makes me a go-getter

The whole thing actually doesn't make sense with that word at the beginning of the line... think about it, he's actually supposed to be backing up his earlier statement with that line, not arguing against it. :)

Christ and we thought the other ones were pedantic :)

Starting a sentence with And or But is a no-no but a lot of songs do...

Nah, I see what Kay's saying. To translate it to suburban: "I can't stand it when my brothers tell me to look for someone else, but I love the way she smiles!"

Yes, it makes no sense! :O

The "but" should be a "'cos" or something.

It's not that (hell, I do that all the time), it should be 'because', or something.

I can't stand when brothers tell me...
'cos the smile that she shows makes me a go-getter

This isn't grammar, but I was just trying to think of non-urban annoying lyrics, and I remembered:

Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak
Somewhere in this town

THE JAIL.

I hate double negatives in songs too.

I don't want nobody...
I aint seen nobody...
I ain't kissed nobody...
