I can't help but feel that we're stagnating a little bit recently. Some of that has been down to me not being around so much what with me having a house fire and all of that, but I can't help but feel that I need to inject something into the site.

So, this is your chance to tell me you what think needs to be done to the site in order to attract more people.

Go team...

More content is all I can think of without doing promotions and other things that will cost money. The quality is fine, it's better than most other stuff I come across.

Maybe use something more like the blog style format instead of the current one? It would certainly encourage me to read more of things like the news if it was all in one long stream (clearly marking news/features/other).

It would help with it being a more iPhone friendly format too.

The stuff that seems to kick off hits is iPhone stuff, and lewd stuff. So I guess more of those two.

Really though it is always down to the age-old problem of generating enough content to keep that front page ticking over. And there's that old chestnut of the Metacritic / Gamerankings thing. Weirdly other sites seem to get hits purely from the sort of sad individuals who like to trawl MC/GR, look for low scores and then barrack the reviewers to defend their purchases.

Changing the site design to a blog style view is definitely an idea I'm going to give some thought. At least that way the site continues to at least look fresh and busy. Though I don't want to take the emphasis away from features and reviews, so a good balance needs to be struck.

If you're going with a blog-style look and feel for the main site, you've already got a really nice design with iPhone Gamer so if you went for something like that, it could work out well.

One thing occured to me that might kill two birds with one stone and keep the front page looking fresh as well as getting people more interested in the news stories would be to do a similar thing to iPhone Gamer and have a fixed-width image for both sites that you can upload along with a news story. It's not too much of a ballache to find images, the ballache comes with trying to get the bastards in the right size and format :)

It's an idea though - but for AATG I think you'd still need a reviews / previews section and some sort of regular cycled splashes so not sure how all that would fit together.

Have two streams instead of one as it is usual for blogs? Left side news, right side features reviews. Might not look very good, though.

Peej - yeah that's my big worry. That big features and reviews would get bumped down the page by silly news stories.

I think I'll look into displaying articles in that style but still keep the right hand side of the page for highlighting certain things like "Recent Reviews, Comments, Posts" still it's just about presenting it nicely.

Maybe we should just spam EG and other sites?? ;)

But on a more serious note, getting on GR or metacritic seems to be a start point, perhaps smartening up the front page as discussed and keeping up a decent flow of news, reviews and previews.

Alternatively, you just need to get hold of a few thousand beta keys for some up coming MMO or something :)

Edit: Or porn

Email a few porn stars and find out if they play video games. I bet some do and then run a feature on porno gaming.

How about something like rockpapershotgun, you know where they keep the big stories/reviews/what-have-you at the top in a box and change them every so often. Then just have the regular updates below that.

Porn works for me too though.

I dunno, if you go blog style, you will be treated like a blog.

You could have a blog option, like EG has, but if you ask me, there's just something more legit about the proper layout you have now, that vanishes when you become part of the scummy "blogosphere".

Porn seems to be the general consensus doesn't it?

How are dataflame with hosting porn then?

Alternatively, you could try and join the Eurogamer empire - Eurogamer West Midlands or Eurogamer Ireland for instance :P

I can see where NewYork is coming from too though, maybe going down the blog route would bring the site down the wrong road.

Large box of a set colour with image and a few lines of text (deliberately written as an intro before the break) for full features/reviews then for news/silly a different, more subtle colour with no image? In each case clicking through to the complete article.

I only have the preference of no white text on black backgrounds. It hurts.

Yeah that's a very good point and something I'm conscious of. Though having said that, Joystiq, Kotaku and VG247 seem to do OK that way. I'm just not sure we're churning out enough content to do the current design - which I really like - justice.

Well, those are all blogs in the intentional sense that next to none of their content is their own*. All their blog posts link to legit sites that aren't blogs.

*Neither is AATG's content its own, for the most part (news-wise, I mean), but again once you go blog-style, you give off that image that AATG is just a portal to legit news sites.

Besides, you think lack of new front page content is noticeable now, it's going to be really noticeable in blog form.

Would you be against hosting flash games? If you put up some stuff, perhaps with a strong user-generated level slant, it might get visitors and you could flag up the content along side the games.

Thing is, the main reason people go to those sites is because they've got full time staff sitting around twiddling their thumbs schmoozing press offices and videogame companies, going to launches, generally getting news that people want to read. No one goes to VG247 because it looks nice. Do they?

Same goes for Kotaku. Though I like 'em because I think they've got a sick sense of humour at times - like my good self.

Yeah I'm thinking that some sort of combination of the two might work.

We have a decent through-put of news stories but as they take up only a small space on the front-page, they're not obvious and the front-page doesn't reflect that output.

I'll play around with some draft layouts this weekend and see if I can come up with something. Problem is, and I do this every 6-12 months, I worry that I'm un-necessarily re-decorating.

You are. :P

Re-decorating is so side-stepping the actual problem: lack of new content.

(Note, I'm not complaining about lack of new content. I come here regardless :) )

I think the problem with the lack of new content is that we tend to just review stuff as and when it's released. We rarely get promos or preview copies of stuff, and when we do it still takes a while for a "normal" person to sit down, play the game enough or complete it to then be able to write about it. So by the time we've done that, some other site's already been there, done that, blagged the freebies.

We could do with a lot more original articles. Stuff like the gaming tattoos news story was a hoot. Not necessarily more stuff like that (we don't want to tread on Spong's toes do we?) but thought provoking gaming articles.

That was a blatant throw-away piss-take. Though I did find being 'nasty' quite cathartic.

In all seriousness, if you want to open a "Shirtless Taylor Lautner" section, I'd update it on the daily.

I'm still reeling that so many reasonably fit women deface themselves with really fucking horrible tats. Fat gaming nerds - yeah you'd kind of expect it because no one's ever going to want to see 'em shirtless so the tats never see the light of day, but hot women? Naw, come on love you're just going to look cheap :)
