I love my PS3 for all those first-party exclusives and iPlayer.

The former was what I bought it for. But whenever I see multi-platform stuff being whinged about on the PS3, I do silently titter to myself that I've got a 360 n'all.

Aye, and as it was then, this is a developer problem rather than a system problem.

My PS3s main function is still blu-rays despite it now having plenty of good games.

I don't really know why I have any consoles any more, I barely use any of them for anything other than FIFA.

So I start up my PS3 for the first time in ages yesterday

Oh, it's the dreaded system update

Spend at least 20 minutes letting that download (dodgy wifi connection) and install

Okay, finally, now to the store to download that game...

"You need to update the store software"

Ooookay... fine...

Another 10 minute process

FINALLY get the game downloaded (another fifteen minutes) and installed. Play it. Meh.

TODAY: Yay, time to play PS3. At least today I can just go straight into the game!

"You need to update the system firmware"

OH COME ON

I did something similar recently, found I had twenty minutes to spare and thought I'd have a quick blast on one of the PSN games I've got on there, then between a system update and patches for every single game I tried, I basically lost the entire time to watching progress bars tick slowly across the screen. Bah.

At least it seems like they also appreciate the problem and look to be improving things with the PS4.

The current system is certainly something only an electronics company rather than a software one would come up with.

The PS3 wake up function for game updates etc that PS+ gives is nice but it shouldn't be needed.

it's bullshit. Consoles aren't consoles anymore.

A PC with an SSD is quicker to get into games with.

Very funny, but in terms of serious options:

1. Buy a new PS3
2. Wait for PS4 and thus not get to play all the PS3 games I'd been meaning to, including TLOU
3. Convert to PC gaming which seems so cheap in comparison but is a bit gay like Xbox, really

Bad luck NY :(

I'd suggest going for option 1 - especially as there's stuff you still want to play on it.

Edit: Have you considered fixing it yourself?

Couldn't hurt trying, I guess. Especially to rescue my files.

I saw a hairdryer method online that I might have a crack at.

I'm guessing the PS3 will drop in price when PS4 comes out. Kinda how the PS2 hit the £99 mark. I can wait. Sony aren't screwing me twice, dammit :D

Is it THAT good, though, really. I mean, people say Uncharted 3 is good but we all know deep down that it isn't.

Meh, "people" say that Uncharted 3 is good, *I* say that TLOU is good. For context, I think Naughty Dog were the most over-rated developer out there until this game.

I sure hope TLOU lives up to the hype, as I'm planning on getting a PS3 to play it.

Wh... what? If anything I'd say they are under rated considering the huge number of people without PS3s that will never play their games (IMO, the best games of this generation)

I'm a few hours into The Last of Us. It felt like something that I just *had* to play (despite it being a "AAA" title, and therefore not something I'd enjoy as much as the 4/10 pish I seem to love so much).

It really is as good as regular gamers are saying (I'm just not quite sure it's as good as all these evangelical critical reviewers are suggesting). The prologue really knocked the wind out of me, but the following couple of hours, which brought me into the mechanics of the game, didn't seem to scream "this is it!" Now, I've taken a break for a couple of days, and I'm dwelling on the story, mood and characters... yes, it's a terrific game. As far as games go.

Just cycled to town and came back empty handed after hearing Game might have been selling new 320GB PS3s for £150.

All they do new, now, are the super-slim models.

Which are apparently cheap tat that can drown out lawnmowers with the noise they make.

Anyone have a super-slim?

I just bought one yesterday, and it's super quiet. Honestly can't hear when it's on. Obviously not as quiet when you're playing a disc, but still better than the 360 or Wii.

From what I've read noise wasn't an issue anyway, it's the general build quality and cheap glossy plastic that people had an issue with. Not the best-looking of consoles, true, but all that matters is if it does its job, and quietly.

yeah, mine is quiet. the plastic lid thing is super-nasty but beggars can't be choosers.

also, it doesn't do that annoying CRACK that the old slim did after it warmed up.
