So, inspired by NY's suggestion this morning, and as an attempt at mixing things up a bit, I'd like to start creating AATG specific features. Something different to the norm that hopefully gets the community involved and make the site stand out.

The first one, I've provisionally titled "VS." and the basic concept of it is that 2 opposing sides, either 2 individuals, or we open this up to the whole forum, debate the merits of a particular game, character, series, console or piece of hardware and at the end we pick a winner.

Sounds pretty simple and I haven't seen anything similar elsewhere and I really like the idea.

So let's bash out a formula, as well as topics to battle it out over.

Off the top of my head.

Halo - really that defining?
GTAIV - as good as everyone said at the time?
Censorship
The Wii
The PSP
3D gaming (as in 3DTV)
The iPad as a gaming platform
Kirby
Motion Controls
Games Journalism
Casual Games

Quality concept, although will this be a front page article thing, or a thread within the forum?

Other possible topics:
Digital Distribution - the future?
Do games reviews need scores?
Something about whether the speed at which games are discounted at retail impact on developers/quality/innovation etc

Well depending on whether it's a 2 person, or 2 sides thing, will determine if it starts on the forum and then gets edited into a front-page article. I quite like the idea of the latter.

I think game vs. game ones would be especially popular.

Like, if I saw "Blur vs. Split/Second" on a aggregator website I might want to click through to see which is better, and might get riled up that my favourite wasn't argued for well enough, etc.

I think that should be the primary focus.

But whatevs.

BTW: who the heck is against Kirby??? :O

Hmm never thought of doing games vs games - good idea again NY.

And Split/Second vs Blur is very on topic.

D00d, that was the original idea I presented :P

NewYork said:How about "Versus" articles? No, not like EG's PS3 vs. 360 articles. But like have two people arguing why their chosen game is better than the other's.

A good one right now would be Red Dead vs. GTAIV (or some other sandbox game or western game)

Weirdly I'd actually planned to do the reviews that way if no one else tackled Split/Second before I got Blur

So, do we limit this to just two people or the whole forum?

I would say try it with two people first as that is also easier to edit in the end.

If its front page hits you're after, I say limit it to two people. You can always then link to the forum to debate it?

PS. I'll happily have a go as an Anti-Halo type if you need someone to stick their head above the ramparts.

PPS. I think it could work well as a general discussion, as well as a more specific Game X vs Game Y. Although maybe calling the feature "Vs" gives the impression its going to more be about the latter?

I'd have two people. If you have the conversation on the forum itself, then others can chip in, and then in the edit just incorporate that into the conversation as though one of the two people said it.

But overall, the idea of one person vs. another would be the format, I think.

Any more and you're looking at more of a "roundtable" article (which is another cool thing to do, though).

Agree that 2 people is the bestest option. Should make for a lively comments thread through :D

Cool idea, should produce some great articles. I have seen it before in the form of "Devil's Advocate" or something like that in either PC Gamer or PC Zone, but imo they did it in a pretty poor way where the individual pieces were deliberately very fanboy-esque.

Nope I was actually waiting to see if you'd started one. The "Blur vs S/S" thing wouldn't really be a review per se, just an opinion piece but I will gladly take the place of the Blur proponent if you want to do a head to head on S/S later.

Superb, looking forward to reading it.

I've actually mellowed a lot about S/S's heavily scripted stuff, it's still utterly jaw dropping in places. I think though it has a similar problem to Pure in that the main "hook" (the powerplay meter) is a bit of a missed opportunity, just like the "trick to boost" thing was in Pure.

Nevertheless, both games are bloody fantastic.

The multiplayer bit of Blur certainly is absolutely brilliant and deserves some attention. Whether or not the single player career mode is up to scratch remains to be seen (hopefully I'll find out tonight as my copy's apparently been dispatched).

Depends if he has admin rights over here or not...

Re. Blur and S/S, without wanting to steal anyones thunder, they're actually pretty different games - and although understandable, it would be like comparing Burnout to Mario Kart really. Bad scheduling by both companies IMO.

They are indeed very different games but they're both arcade racers so you can do a few comparisons between the two - It's certainly worth a go and probably got more of a point than say comparing something like Forza 3 and Mario Kart.

Incidentally, if anyone fancies teaming up for a fucking huge argument about how shit Bioshock 2 was, I'm up for it :)

Just remember to go into it with a set schedule so you don't end up meandering and rambling. Like:

Compare graphics
Compare handling
Compare experience (loading, interface, layout)
Compare longevity, challenge
Compare tracks
Specific pros/cons
Summary arguments

etc.
