When I heard that was one of the "world premieres" from VGX I was a bit "huh" in a bad way... now I'm kind of "huh" in a good way.

Those vast, procedurally-generated spaces do look tantalising, you have to wonder though just how much gameplay there's actually going to be to fill them all. Exploration is only interesting as long as there are interesting things to discover, and it's the interesting things - AI, scripted sequences, bespoke gameplay and the rest - that take the time.

Still, impressive trailer, no doubt.

I think if you set the player's expectation exploration alone can keep you going a while. Like in Proteus for example, granted that doesn't last a long time.
The fish and sharks did look very much like the sharks and fish we know though, which does lead me to wonder what level they are procedurally generated at. Different coloured fish might not be exciting enough to carry my interest.

Proteus is tiny though, and as you say, only last a few hours at most. It's also surprisingly full of stuff going on - all the creatures have their own AI routines which, whilst they may not be all that clever, are all little bespoke bits of code. Multiply that across an entire planetary ecosystem, let alone across a galaxy full of millions of planets, and you can start to see the potential problem.

Yeah definitely. Worst case scenario it could well be fluff on a hollow game.

Sir You are Being Hunted has a procedurally generated set of islands, with a very focused but solid game on top. I'm not sure how much more to expect from a 4 man team.

If they could provide something akin to the original Elite with planets like this to land on and look about mine a bit, and build a base sounds pretty exciting.

The wildcard is exactly what role other players have in the game - it appears to be one of these newfangled 'mingleplayer' games (Edge's term, not mine), so it could well be that their aim is to allow other players to provide a layer of gameplay by giving you the ability to interact with them in some way, whilst staying clear of it becoming a full-on MMO.

More detail on No Man's Sky in this EG feature. Well, I say 'more,, when what I mean is 'not really any more'.

I do love their ambition to recreate the look of the classic 70's and 80's sci fi book covers though - I remember reading a lot of those myself and always staring with interest at the artwork on the covers. The concept. Art for the original Star Wars films has a similar feel to it as well.

At this point I don't know whether to applaud their ambition or to just see it as another case of a team putting out a couple of successful games and then going far too ambitious with their next one, only for it to reside in development hell for years on end. I hope it's the former though.

Yeah, I think you're right to be cautious. Hope it pans out for them.

I hadn't even considered it being multiplayer, I must admit that put me off until I heard it was "mingleplayer"(first time I've heard that used :)

BIt more on RPS.

That on-stage demo seemed like a bit of a flop to me.

Plus "I've seen better"? Get this man some media training.

Isn't this like the third year that it's been at E3? It's even on the box of my PS4. Also notable in its absence from E3 this year but on my PS4's box is that indie-developed Ico lookalike that I can't even remember the name of. That seems to have completely disappeared.

That's the one. No show this year at E3 so far, seems to still be in the works by Tequila (dev diary on YouTube from back in March). I rather liked the look of it, not too sure about the sound of the gameplay elements though.
