Anyone stumping up a couple of hundred notes for an Xbox 360 Slim?

Considering it at the moment but I'm thinking it might be worth waiting for a few people to get one and report back with the problems and bugs before leaping aboard.

I'd love one but really can't justify the purchase. Not least when I've got a shit ton of DIY to pay for.

Nah, I haven't got a particularly loud 360 anyway, which is the only real reason I can see to upgrade.

I might see what bundles become available with the Kinect - for my daughter, honest.

This should have been my answer, especially since only using my Elite a handful of times this year.

Sadly, I have one pre-ordered /o

I too have a ton of DIY to sort out. I think I'll be spending most of September up to my elbows in paint. Bah.

One of the conditions for me doing up two bathrooms, the kitchen and my daughter's room is that I get to build some awesome new storage for my games collection.

I've been patiently waiting for my current 360 - which I got a few months after launch - to die but sadly it seems to just keep on going despite regularly showing signs of being about to keel over.

It'd be nice to have a bigger HD (mine's a 20Gb which does get a bit annoying because you can only have about two games installed at once), but otherwise I don't really have any great reason to upgrade, especially as they've managed the remarkable trick of creating a hardware revision that's even less visually appealing than the original. Well, maybe, I think I might've just gotten used to the current design.

It does look rather "bent" in the middle. Like someone kicked it downstairs.

I want first hand reports from those of you who are getting one. How "quiet" is QUIET.

As long as you can hear a console (or computer) while playing it's too loud in my opinion.

I'm not going to buy one. Don't see the need to own two console that are virtually the same and play the same games.

If I can hear my console over the telly in the evening, it's too loud. The 360 is too loud unless games are installed to HD so the new slim has to be about as quiet as the PS3 (which again can get a bit on the loud side when the auxiliary fans kick on or the blu ray drive goes on a seek offensive).

The Wii's very quiet (again with the optical drive being the noisiest bit) but you can't beat the old solid state consoles for being super-quiet.

I'm very tempted, purely because my current 360 has RROD'd twice and is now out of warranty. I was initially thinking of trading it in, but my aversion to Game and the trade in offers not being great, I'm not so sure now. I'll probably just wait until it breaks again and see what deals are around then.

One other thing I'm wondering about is if the 3 year warranty still exists or if MS have got themselves out of it with the redesign. Anyone know what the deal is?

I will definitely be getting one (haven't ordered yet as I'm hoping shopto will reopen preorders - they closed very quickly) to replace my busted UK machine.

Not really worried about problems and bugs as much as you seem to be, peej, I think MS have come along really far in their 360 production.

I don't see any reason for Jasper owners to pick this up. Same old noisy DVD drive. Until they fix that, the requirement to install the game to HDD means that the Jasper runs very quiet anyway.

You're kidding? I thought that was one of the fixes this time round - a quieter DVD drive.

Fuck that then. If they haven't at least fixed that, then it's not worth bothering with.

The Slim uses a newer version of the Lite-On drives found in the Jasper machines. They've fitted a strip of rubber to the back of the drive to dampen vibration and make it less noisy. According to Anandtech it is 3 dB quieter ;-)

I always install my 360 games to the hard drive just so I don't have to put up with the noise of the dvd drive.

Aye I usually install mine too but even with the bigger drive in the Slim, you don't always want to install *everything* (specially not lightweight stuff you just want a quick blat on from time to time).

lite-on drives are OK (I've got one in my PC at home and it's pretty quiet) and at least it sounds like they're doing a few cheap tricks to try and lessen the noise a bit.

My Jasper arcade is as noisy as fuck though, drive wise and because I tend to game in the evenings when my nipper's asleep, I tend to have the TV turned down to a minimum (or wear headphones) and the seek noise for games streaming off the disk is ridiculous.

Mind you, the PS3's not exactly whisper quiet either but a damned sight quieter than all the 360s I've ever owned.

I dunno man, I guess it's different to installing everything on PS3, but I am planning on installing at least the ten games I play the most, which is probably seven games more than I'm ever actually actively playing. Are there really that many games that you randomly load up and play?

Yep from time to time - usually just old stuff I haven't finished and am stop-gap-filling in time between bigger releases (was playing The Force Unleashed yesterday just for a bit of a reminisce and it was a pain in the arse to have to queue the thing up installing, wait around for ten minutes or so, then get into a game which would only last 20 mins or so anyway).

I have a PS3 and Wii, but have never owned an XBOX 360. Having nearly caved in at the start of the year I decided to hold off, anticipating that a new model would be released this year.

The funny thing is, now that it's here, I'm not sure I want it. I haven't played Assassin's Creed or Red Dead yet and have waited to get them on the 'superior' platform, but as there aren't any 360 exclusives that I fancy playing (maybe Alan's Wake, but that is about it), I can't help feeling it is a waste of money. As soon as I think that however, I know how anoyed I will be playing the 'lesser' version - even if in reality I wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway.

My enjoyment of Bayonetta was severely dented by everyone banging on about how crap it was on PS3 - I couldn't not think about it whilst playing :-

I was hoping there'd be more of a price war with the new Slim but everyone seems to be doing it for around the same price.

Still trying to convince the missus that I truly really need one but in all honesty I can think of a brace of stuff I'd be better off spending the 200 notes on.

it's such an underwhelming update. I suppose they had to change the cooling system now that the CPU and GPU are on the same chip, but it's a far cry from old slimmy: http://i32.tinypic.com/334rfi8.jpg

I want your PS3. Mine , and always has been, is as loud as two rutting teenagers. You put a game in, you play for 10 minutes, it cuts to a scene where the character says something along the lines of "let's take the battle to them and des....WHHHHIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" and then that's it until I turn it off. Fucking noisy fucking useless fucking piece of fucking shit.

I tried to play it on Saturday. It's on top of a unit. Dust free. Not enclosed. Plenty of air-space around it. Yes Saturday was hot. Yes I was sweating like a bastard. But I don't expect it to go WHIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR as soon as I turn it on, and sound over the TV, even when the TV was up above what you would class to be normal listening volume (i.e. much louder than the average voice). To put it into perspective, grab one of those really large tall fans you can buy, stick it on the highest setting, and listen to it. Then imagine that multiplied by three and that's my PS3, without exaggeration. It's a shit piece of equipment.

My slim is very quiet. It takes a couple of hours in this heat for the fans to kick into overdrive.

I have a NAS box that is louder though, so I can't play in quiet bliss either.
