Release date confirmed for 8th October on PS3, 360 and PC.

78 stages, 550km of roads, 13 countries and all the support classes too. Really looking forward to a proper WRC game.

My only concern after watching this making of video is that the stages won't actually be based on their real life counterparts. Rather the developers will just make up the layout of the stage using the appropriate road conditions for whatever country that stage is in.

What I always liked about the Evolution/Sony PS2 WRC games was how they recreated the actual stages run in real life. For me the proper stages are just as important a part of having the WRC license as the cars and drivers.

Depends on the track design but I share your fears and I can't quite understand why they didn't at least try and recreate some of the official runs.

The absolute proof of the pudding for this game though will be the handling. It looks like they've done a fairly good job with reproducing the cars, the environments and the look and feel of proper "tartan thermos flask" rallying - but if the handling's shite, then it'll be all for nothing.

Gameplay trailer

Looks like it could actually be a good rally game. Obviously it doesn't look quite as good as Dirt, but I rather have a racer with good handling than a racer with great visuals but unsatisfying handling.

Dirt was garbage! O_O

Anyway, that looks amazing. Doesn't look too simmy but then that might mean it scratches the arcade-rally Rallisport itch

I've really come to despair at rally/driving games this gen. I just don't see why someone can't nail the bloody handling. (It wasn't really an issue last gen).

That said, Dirt 2 may well have the worst handling of any driving game I've ever played.

I love Split/Second and Blur, but other than Fuel, TRU and BP, I wouldn't give anything else house room any more.

Ok, Flatout... even with its "broken physics". :)

Very true. Dirt, Grid, Shift have all been rubbish, primarily because they're trying to invoke an emotion associated with driving rather than just trying to create good AI and decent handling models. Forza 2 and 3 are dry as hell and have a really weird "driving a camera, not a car" feel to them.

Supercar Challenge is a particularly good racer and I'm really enjoying Race Pro at the mo too, but I agree wholeheartedly that there's ben a dearth of decent racers this gen.

I loved GRID, too. I don't much like racing games, though, which could speak to the issue.

Nah I've moved on. Now I'm likening that sort of handling model to a sparrow impaled on a kirby grip.

If you can bear to tear yourselves away from doing a reach around, the demo of this is on the live marketplace at the moment. And....it's bloody good too. Pro settings are brutal and challenging. It's not the prettiest game ever but the gameplay is excellent and there's no tearing. Definitely picking this up.

Cool, I don't think the PS3 demo is out until Wednesday but will definitely try it.

That said, with GT5 and Hot Pusuit round the corner I don't know if there's any point in my investing in another driver this year :-(

Forza 3 is severely lacking in the track department, imo.

Tried the demo, got pissed off at the co-driver telling me about a sharp corners AFTER I pass the braking point for said corner. Deleted it.

Other than that, pretty standard rally game. Not as fun as RSC, even though the tech is more realistic.

EDIT

Just read that gaf post. Glad to see it's not just me.

I reckon the co-driver calls are out, but after a lifetime of being back-seat-driven by the missus I tend to ignore them anyway. Extremely satisfying risk-reward structure in expert mode, and the game works beautifully with the MS wheel. It is pretty ugly though but I haven't seen any of the frame droppage. That lens flare did make me laugh though. It's the exact same effect used in the last Screamer Rally game :)

Played this a bit more over the weekend and then downloaded the demo of Dirt 2 to compare both. WRC feels more rewarding, if you play it on expert, and I found out that you can set it so that the co-driver is a bit quicker, but overall I think I would prefer Dirt 2, even if the presentation (i.e. menus) is really off-putting and the handling a bit too forgiving.

What's the next non-arcadey off-road game to look forward to, aside from GT5 and Dirt 3 next year?

My cheapo copy of this turned up last night so I cracked out the wheel (and the ironing board) and gave it a go. No matter what I do, I just can't seem to get on with the game on medium settings. It's as hard as nails, seriously steep difficulty curve right from the word go, even if you work your way through the Rally School / Tutorials.

I can see why this didn't click with people, particularly people (like me) who came straight from the nice tail-happy and predictable handling of something like DiRT 2 to this.

I'll persevere but I'm really glad I didn't grab this at launch.

My copy is still sat on the shelf. No rainy days to try it out yet!

I've not heard great things about the wheel implementation though. Stick to the pad?

Wheel support is actually very good, in fact it's close to being the saving grace for the game's rather bizarre controls. Have to say though, something's definitely changed between the demo I played and the full version I've been struggling to get to grips with. No matter what I try, I can't seem to get the game set to the same settings the demo was in by default.

In the end I'm considering just getting rid of it and writing it off as a bad job. Perhaps I've just been spoiled rotten by DiRT 2 and Motorstorm but WRC just fails on every level to be any fun.

Bump!

A WRC3 demo is now on the PS Store. It actually is really quite good!

I think I prefer the racing to Dirt 3.

Wow that's big talk, I'd better take a look at that - the last couple of WRCs left me cold.

Word is, the game is turning out to be really rather impressive. Someone's actually made a decent rally game after all these years!

I have WRC, liked it, but didn't bother with the sequel. The new engine on this seems pretty impressive.

Is it still the game guys who did Screamer Rally? See, that alone meant that I thought the first couple of games would be great but the handling was terrible.

I will definitely be taking a look at this though.

Hopefully there's the option to stop the co-driver screaming like a little girl every time you clip a kerb in this one :)

Just had a quick spin. It's a massive massive improvement over the last two games, but oh what a terrible choice of track for the demo. narrow - really narrow, and requires you to be absolutely pinpoint accurate in your steering or braking to get anywhere near the top ten places in either single stage or challenge mode.

But it's very good indeed. I am sorely tempted to drop some money on this, the handling is absolutely brilliant but it's a real tough game, at least that hasn't changed from the previous games.

Stevas would love this methinks!
