Had a go of the demo (360) last night and I liked it, alot. The combat and guns felt great, the cars handled nicely and I thought it looked lovely.
This has gone from a maybe to a day one purchase.

If you think it looks lovely, you should see it on a decent PC! :-)

I loved the first game and this is very much its sequel so I'm happy.

This thread on OcUK has some pretty good screenshots from the PC version, I didn't get around to taking any myself last night as I didn't have much time.

Did anybody play it on the PS3?! is it me or there is alot of tearing going on?!

And I didn't like it that much... There was something missing for me, but I really can't put my finger on what it was... :(

Quite surprised really, I liked the demo, even if it was a bit technically lacking.

I looked at the reviewer's name then dropped down to the score. That guy's ruined a few surprises in the last couple of games he's reviewed... and he's a bit too scathing (and factually suspect) on things he personally doesn't enjoy playing.

That said, if I had to pull either him or Dan Whitehead out of a bear pit, the rope's going this guy's way.

I have serious doubts about EG's quality control when it comes to reviewers these days.

Sad thing is that save for the original Mafia review when EG gives a game a mark that is seen as "controversial" when people look back on that game in a month or so (or even a week in Kane and Lynch 2's case), it's *generally* agreed as being pretty much right after all.

Or so it seems to me anyway.

Sometimes (most of the times) you're right. but in the last year I can rememeber Dragon Age and Risen being a good lenght off.

In my opinion in the last 2 or 3 years EG has been more off on the RPG genre than anything else (maybe because of the lenght of the games).

But this is maybe a matter for a different thread.

Has anybody tried the PS3 demo?

Too much tearing for a game supposedly this big... :(

I haven't passed the first 15% of GTA IV, so I really can't comment but this type of critics can be mirrored to all GTAs, some really lenghty missions with really shitty checkpoints placing.

Mafia II does have checkpoints mid mission, so that's a few points above GTA IV for me :D

That really does look lovely. I am aiming to try the 360 demo out when the gaming embargo lifts next tuesday but the PC version looks really atmospheric and pretty. I'd never get a look in if I bought the PC versh though.

I think he was trying to behave (had the speed limiter on as well) to avoid a bit of extra cop attention. That's ace if running red lights gets you chased though :)

I rather like the car I was driving (it's one you nick as a test of your lock picking and police avoidance early in the game), it had got really bashed up earlier in the evening and I'd not long spent $200 to get it fixed.

Of course as soon as I pulled out onto the road from the mechanic's I hadn't looked properly and that's the reason why my right headlight didn't work and another $70 bill when I got home! What a muppet!

In a lot of games I probably would have just nicked something else and not given a toss but I feel a bit different in this for some reason.

I feel the same way about hanging on to that car, Whizzo. I'm a few chapters further on than you, and better cars are now available... but there's something about that old clunker that appeals.

This is fantastically atmospheric and has been a joy to play so far.

If you're handing out a 4/10 for something of this quality, then you may as well just shave a monkey and have it throw shit at a keyboard, because that review would have more integrity, frankly. (Incidentally, I didn't read the EG review, but I understand it was recently altered... some factual accuracies were withdrawn. Are EG cloning Dan Whitehead now...?)

I had it on normal driving mode, simulation is a lot more realistic in how cars handle but my repair bills would be a lot more than they already are!

I've not read any reviews and haven't been following the game's progress but virtually everyone that's played it can't seem to understand where EG's metacritic-baiting 4/10 came from. Some sort of homage to the review of the original Mafia?

It sounds alright. How much is there to do outside the story strand? Is it another one of those sandbox games that's all box and no sand?

There is absolutely nothing to do outside of the story. Nada, zero etc. etc. The free-roam is entirely pointless.
