Does anyone play Minecraft?

If you don't... How do I explain it? Well, the free version is a bit like lego. Run around building random things out of all different blocks. Sign up for a free account and you can go on multiplayer servers... But nothing you do is permanent.

Pay though, and it changes. It's only in alpha right now, but Minecraft changes into this adventure game with crafting and base building. Go out and about during the day, but watch out at night as zombies and spiders come out that can hurt you. It's almost kind of like a 3D first person Dwarf Fortress. Very cool indeed. I AM HOOKED.

How to survive the first night. Personally I built a door for my little base, but whatever.

I'll say yes here as well. I haven't yet worked out how to do anything (more through being distracted by other games than anything) other than dig a bit but I really want to build something massive in it.

I had a week where I couldn't do anything else but play the alpha one. Really addictive. Once you find, or read about some of the more complex recipes it starts getting really getting it's hooks in.

Didn't get as far as building any carts, though I figured out how to make them. I need to mine loads of iron which felt like a bit of a grind. The key thing with recipes is that they are generally shaped like what they make.

Started this evening and the time has flown by, the first day survival guide is very handy indeed.

As nice as my door is it doesn't stop a skeleton firing arrows through the window of it though, the cheeky sod.

My tips for starting a new map.

1. Build on a plateau
2. Make sure that the plateau is large enough for a house and a place to plant trees
3. Make sure the edges of the plateau are at least 2 units high
4. Make sure that there is at least 2 units of space between your plateau and any other plateau of comparable height. Ideally, you want 3 units as spiders can jump gaps of 2
5. Make a raised walkway so that you can get onto your plateau. Make it crooked so that mobs making a beeline for you will fall off
6. Flood your plateau with torchlight as soon as you can to stop mobs spawning on it
7. Plant trees on your plateau as soon as you can, I like them about 5 units apart
8. Expand your territory by building fences, these are effectively 1.5 units tall and can only be vaulted by mobs from a raised block
9. Either make a door or an open s-bend gate for yourself in the fence.
10. Build a farm. dig a hole in the earth, fill it with water. Put a glass block over the water, use a hoe on the surrounding 8 earth blocks. Plant seeds (hoe grass to collect) in these 8 spots and place 4 torches around it. 2 of these should do. Harvest when they go fully dark brown, you'll get wheat and seed(s). Surround the farm with fences to stop animals trampling it. The bread you can make from 3 wheat can help in a pinch.

I thought my GOTY was probably going to be RDR but after investing more time in this one man programmed Java game I'm not sure it will be.

It really doesn't look like much but this is easily the most sandbox game in existence.

After bothering to use wikis to know how to make stuff I have started to love this game. I never thought digging a giant hole in a game could be fun but Its been great so far.

After I've finished my giant tower I might start work on a fort or planet spanning bridge towards snow.

Any specific wikis worth looking at?

I'd been resisting using the internet as much as possible for crafting, but I think that times passed now, and just want to build loadsa crazy things.

Well I was only half joking about Boom blox but it does look shit.

I fail to see why people are getting so excited about something that looks shitter than the levels I made back in 2000 using the Unreal Tournament level editor.

Such a graphics whore :P

Comparing it to something like a level editor misses the point of it. It's more about discovery and creativity - it's closer to a computer version of Lego crossed with Dwarf Fortress than anything.

Well that's fair enough but how come people are falling over themselves to pimp this but then mock something like the aforementioned Boom blox?

This does look like the ultimate in "pimp this to look like you're 'in the know'" type games, though, so I do sort of see Hairy's point. I haven't played either though, so I wouldn't want to actually agree with either side.

I'm not sure where the mocking of Bloom Blox is coming from as I've never seen anyone mention that and Minecraft in the same sentence before now. Having played both, I'm not sure the comparison makes sense anyway - there really is very little common between the two.

And I think people are praising it because they enjoy it.

I only made the initial comparison because Boom Blox has a really great level editor in which you can pretty much make anything. It's admittedly a weak comparison and I only made it tongue-in-cheek because I'm still not sure what all the Minecraft fuss is about.

The only problem with this game is that it has made me start looking at playing Dwarf Fortress as well, knowing that between the two of them (+civ) I'm not sure how much I need, or want, any other games.

Minecraft's one of those odd experiences - Completely and utterly different if you're a tightwad and don't pay for it. You can randomly and quite happily muck about in the browser version for hours on end, knowing that at the end of it, your sublime constructions will go the way of the dodo.

On the full version though, some of the stuff people have built is just...breathtaking.

Can you imagine if Sony's vision of Home was something more like this - with a truly user-definable mini universe that you tapped into, rather than just some glorified marketing exercise?

I really like the idea of Minecraft. Can't wait to see what the guy does when he teams up with the new art bloke he's recruited (see the random musings thread for examples of his retrofitted game demakes)

The cathedral is incredible. Must have taken a while to build that.

In a way I'm glad that I can't buy this, because I'm sure I would lose many hours just building stuff. :)
