Ha, you know I kinda suspected this all along. Phoenix has put in some great performances over the years and to seemingly go so far off the rails was a bit of a stretch. I had a feeling something else was going on.

I remember his spell as a hi-hop MC/rapper.

Tragic. But if it was all acted then that's been some journey.

Easy to say now, but certainly neither David Letterman nor anyone on his staff had much of an idea when Phoenix went on for that interview.

Read the second post :P

And I'm not even trying to be smart about it - the majority of people knew he was putting it on. The most you could say about Letterman is that he wasn't in on the joke during the interview, but I doubt he was taken in during the long run.

This isn't Hollywoods "best kept secret", or anything :D

Heh, fair enough, I was aware that people thought it might be being put on due to Affleck's documentary, guess I just enjoy not being so cynical and going along for the ride :p

Ahem... also, Letterman was in on it.

However, in an interview conducted last summer for Nuvo, Late Show writer Bill Scheft said that Letterman was part of the hoax, and compared Phoenix's performance on the show to late comic Andy Kaufman.

"Dave knew about it and Dave loved it because he could play along," Scheft said. "He could do whatever he wanted with it. And he did, and it was great television. But I will take credit for the line, 'I think I owe Farrah Fawcett an apology'. That line was mine. I gave that to him during the break."
