Couldn't find the official thread (this is where someone turns round and says "here it is you baldy slacker!) so here's a new one.

Watching the footage from the retail release, I can't help but think it's actually going to be alright in the end. The intro movie is nuts though.

Anyone else still excited about this, or has Yamauchi's pissing about and delaying tactics ruined the whole thing for you?

Car PokemonPorn = good, right?

The fact that the game features actual racing disciplines lifts my expectations somewhat above the snorefest non-sim that is Forzabut I haven't played a GT game since the first one (barring a little play on GT4 at ECTS 2003) so I'm not sure what to expect.

As the front page says, this finally gets released on the 24th of November.

The long wait has not dampened my enthusiasm for GT5. I've always been a massive Gran Turismo fan and even thought the PSP version was great! What I've always thought what GT gets spot on is the variety of tracks on offer. The fantasy tracks that Polyphony Digital create are the best in the business, far better than the lacklustre efforts in Forza 3.

Roll on the 24th :-)

Either that or it's going to end up with a day one patch that'll take 3 years to download :)

A day one patch is a given, Peej. ;-)

I'll post what I posted at another forum:

I've preordered but after three exceedingly drab, boring Forzas and the travesty that was GRID, I'm a little disillusioned with racing sims at the moment. Only Race Pro and Supercar Challenge have been worthy of note recently.

I'm hoping the random track generator and the racing discipline mini-careers can hold this one above the crowd.

Have to question why there are 51 types of Skyline and no variants of the Reasonably Priced Car though. What's the point of having the Top Gear test track if there's no RPC?

I thought they'd already said there'd never be any DLC for GT5?

From what I've seen of videos the dynamic racing line hasn't been changed to something that's actually useful. By the time the track turns red you're already over it and it's too late too brake. It's not a very good teaching aid. It'd be better if it warned you earlier so you know where to slow down safely for a corner, then you can experiment by braking a bit later.

You can't learn as quick with their current setup as all it does is force you to guess. Guess wrong and you're in the shit and probably a bad state in which to tackle the next corner. So you aren't going to learn much on that one either.

Racing games are a little soulless, the GT series particularly so. Not really much you can do about it though. MSR/PGR livened it up a bit with the Kudos system, rewarding you for basically pissing around. The career challenges were great too. Going round a snowy Nurburgring in the Maserati 250F was exhilerating and challenging. Bizarre chose their cars well, Polyphonic and Turn 10 try to put in too many.

I always used the little gear indicator that told you to switch to a lower gear as a break point indicator. :)

I agree that GT5 is very soulless, but I probably end up buying it anyway.

So there's 1000 cars and not one Suzuki Liana / Chevrolet Stinkmobile?

Maybe they have a new reasonably priced car in the new season that coincidentally is also in GT5. :)

indeed, I doubt if whoever currently sponsors the reasonably priced car bit would be pleased if the previous sponsors were in there too

Optional install. If you don't do it will install it all over time as you unlock stuff. Bit like Home I reckon

This is what Sony said:

“GT5 gives users the option of an install. This makes loading times throughout much faster but is not a requirement when first playing.

If users choose not to install the data straight away it will do it in stages as news areas, tracks etc are accessed during normal game play.”

As so often VG247 made a bigger deal out of it than it really is.

Initial impression: it's headed for a 7. The content is INSANE! There's so much in this bloody game it's incredible! The Top Gear challenges are excellent and the level of choice at any stage is staggering. The photo mode nets some unbelievable results and the track creator is indeed impressive

All that said, it's extremely sterile, much more so than even Forza 2 or 3.

Haven't tried online yet

Played for about an hour last night (before returning to FO:NV). Huge games with masses of content. Looks gorgeous and plays exactly like GT.

So far, it's everything I hoped it would be

It has got a lot of content, and yes it's very GT but it's the most disappointing game of the year for me. Technically, it's a fucking mess. Graphically it's archaic. I need to play it a lot more but it'd be heading for a 2 out of 10 if I'd just shat a knee-jerk review out like most of the "ten seconds after the embargo" reviews seem to be.

Bloody hell, I know it's not amazing but did Kaz kick you in the bollocks or something? The "Specials" alone elevate this above a lot of games. :-D

As for "graphically archaic", I'm really not sure where that comes from. Example

The presentation of the game really is a fucking mess, I'll give you that, and the "Forza/GT" mode is a shockingly disgraceful example of how not to make a racer but everything else adds up to still give you a decent package.
