So... this any good? Took me long enough to work out what the little symbol was by people's names on my Friends List. Does it kind of pay for itself with lower prices on some things on the store, or is everything like the couple of things I checked and you only get the "proper" price if you're on PS+, and things get jacked up otherwise?

So far the free games have been stuff I'd probably never have tried, yet pretty good, so that's been worthwhile alone for me. I really bought it for the automatic patching as PS3 patches are so rudely large, and it has done that very well for me, if a new game says it has a patch I just skip it and let + get it for me. Likewise firmware patches.

I have bought a couple of special offer titles too and the free minis make it still worth picking the psp up every once in a while. I'm sounding like a salesman a bit here, but it really has been great value for me already and it's only the third month or so...

Funnily enough I thought I'd give it a go and signed up last night. 12 (3 month sub) got me:

- Killzone 3 beta
- Critter Crunch
- A couple of free Minis
- Syphon filter

And that's just on the first day. I've been watching the "heads-up" alerts and the Plus content seems to be updated pretty frequently.

Even if this had jiggling tits on every PS+ Store Screen I wouldn't buy it.

frod, if you were trying to be a salesman, you've done a decent job of it there. I didn't know anything about "automatic patching" benefits, exactly what does it do? Background download updates and such?

Auto patching eh? Now if Sony actually promoted it based on that rather than shitty free XMB icons, themes and rubbish minis, they might get a few more takers.

It looks at your game library and offers to download patches in the background so games are ready *before* you put the disc in and find that the thing needs a vital update. You can even set a time for it to automatically check overnight so things like XMB updates happen behind the scenes

Clever, definitely a big tempter to sign up. Does it actually power the PS3 up to check overnight, though, or can it do it while in standby?

You set a time in the menu for it to power up and update every day. It'll patch firmware and games

This. I got Plus for the games and this is a nice bonus. The fact that it's included as part of Plus is utterly cuntish.

You seriously can't believe it, York? I'm surprised you don't have to pay a sub just to play the games that you buy these days. :p

it seems to update every other day. It installs them for you as well, and also completes any other paused downloads you might have queued up. I normally hit up the store on 'new stuff day' and then try it all out at the weekend. No waiting.

Fantasic bunch of freebies with the newly upgraded Plus service.

I'm nabbing free copies of Motorstorm Apocalypse, LBP2 and the new Virtua Fighter later.

Starting to make MS's subscription service to play on Live (without all the Elite, etc, BS) a rather poor cousin.

Yeah, literally this minute got off the phone with a mate agreeing that PSN with PS+ is better value than Live, now.

Certainly isn't free. Still have to sub to Plus to get the 'free' goodies.

Alright, negative nancies. But that's twelve full retail games I'm "renting", for as long as I'm a Plus user, on top of the regular free stuff (which is often avatat, obviously).

Giving away LBP2, MS:A, etc, seems quite a step up.

Sure, they'll probably be giving away our credit card details in a month again, but this seems worth cheering for.

I ended up not buying anything in case it came out for nowt on plus, then just forgetting to ever bother looking at the PS3, and not missing it at all. I wonder if anyone else was like this.

Not sure about the renting thing. I got free plus membership as part of the Sony 'Sorry our network security is shite' apology thing, and they still work - in fact they still allowed me to reinstall and play them once my plus membership had lapsed and I recently stuffed a bigger drive into the machine. Not sure if that's still the case though but it was last time I looked.

Still, 12 quid for a 3 month sub just to grab all the freebie full games is probably one hell of a bargain but even though Plus has had a bit of a shot in the arm, most months it's piss poor for content.

If you want to play semantics, the games are free "with a PS+ subscription". Since there are other benefits outside of the "games you don't have to pay extra for", it is up to Sony's definition of what you are paying for and what comes as a "free" extra.

TBH I don't actually mind that, considering how sodding long the PS3 can wrap itself up when it's updating stuff.

As Retroid said t'other day, the whole process of downloading a digital DL game (at a whopping 4 gig or more), then patching the bastard can take hour after hour even if you're on the zippiest connection. It's a bit late in the day for Sony to slicken the operation up a bit but ffs it does make the whole thing a bit tedious to say the least.

Deus Ex Human Revolution is rotating in as a new "free" game.

Considering subscribing. Even 12 for three months is pretty good value for the games on offer.

I was considering subscribing but then I found out that any games you download for free will only apparently continue to work while you're a subscriber. Also, you can't download any of the games that were previously made free.

Or can you?

But there are about 10 'free' games at the moment. I've been tempted to sign up for PS+, but know I just won't properly take advantage of it....

I'm also in this position, will I be able to justify the 5 euros a month? I mean, shit, my back catalog extends to around 100 games... :(
