Simple and precise. If you had to pick one game to summarise the noughties for you as a gamer, what game would you pick?

Rule:

Game should've been published during the 00s (naturally).

Tough choice between KoTOR and Oblivion.

I choose Oblivion though - really took over my gaming life for ages.

Trying to measure it by absolute enjoyment from start to finish plus replay value.

So far it's looking like GTA 3 just because of the endless hours spent on the thing.

Hmm, difficult to say. Here are some of my contenders (if '10 counts):

Zelda: Majora's Mask
PoP: Sands of Time
Demon's Souls
LittleBigPlanet
Uncharted 2
Heavy Rain
The Sims
Oblivion
Flower
Nier

There are very few games from the first half of the decade because it was a few years before I decided to buy a PS2 (bundled with PoP) and I never bought very many games for it.

Final Fantasy XII (especially including Zodiac Job System) is my fairly easy to choose answer.

Actually, thinking about it a bit more LittleBigPlanet wins. No other game managed to hold my attention for that long. Not to mention getting involved with fansites and all that.

GTA 3 might seem like a populist and throwaway choice but (Driver aside) think about it. It's been pretty much one of the most influential titles on how modern gaming has evolved over the last ten years. Like or loathe GTA (particularly the 3D ones) they've contained ideas that have influenced and been royally stolen by so many other developers since.

It also happens to be one of the GTA games that arguably feels fully finished off and complete without needing extra padding or resorting to hour after hour of repetition in order to make you feel like you've got your money's worth.

I can't remember any other game where I've spent an entire evening trying to do something that the game really doesn't want you to do (fly a dodo for level flight over the cityscape) rather than doing things it's leading you by the nose to do.

It still feels weird playing any open world game involving vehicles where you don't hit the Y or Triangle Button on the PS3 or 360 to get into a car

If we were doing top 5s or 10s, the rest of my list would probably be equally unremarkable but GTA would pretty much be top of the tree.

Oh, and Baldur's Gate, Operation Flashpoint, Deus Ex or Thief 2.

Uncharted 2, Darksiders or inFamous for a this-gen console game.

A few more.

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, naturally. Still the purest examples of how you don't need to over-egg storytelling or lead-by-the-nose gaming in order to produce something utterly beautiful and full of soul.

SSX Tricky. Still the most fun I've had in any game involving snow and still the game I'd secretly hope EA would do in HD if they were ever considering another SSX game.

Burnout 2. The Burnout game that absolutely got the mix spot on between crashing and racing, and firmly established Criterion as a force to be reckoned with.

Metropolis Street Racer. Again because it showed that a decent racer didn't need to be a bore fest. The San Francisco tracks in MSR have never been bettered.

Battlefield 1942. Oh the hours, the hours I lost to this. The hardware upgrades each successive game forced me to roll over my gaming rig. But it was worth it. Probably THE finest multiplayer gaming experience of the noughties and with Battlefield: Bad Company 2 content, Battlefield Bad Company: Vietnam and the upcoming Battlefield 3 rolling out soon, the game goes from strength to strength and for me personally, will always be a better experience than any Call of Duty game.

Mirror's Edge. Simply because it had so many bloody good ideas in it, and the execution was nigh-on perfect for a game that really put you inside your game character's head (almost literally behind her eyes). Loved the setting, the graphic design of it, the main character was awesome. Just an utter pity that EA didn't feel the same way about it

Wii Sports. Because for a moment, a fleeting moment, it hoodwinked me enough into thinking that maybe motion control would be a really good idea.

I better start seeing more references to Gradius V and Ikaruga, or I'm... I'm gonna... fucking... shit... I'll... yeah, you... you better... right. Fucking right. Fucking... yeah, right. I think... I think you - oh, you understand. You fucking... yeah, you do. Don't come with... with that... don't gimme that "but dude" look, you... you fucking... right. You get me. Just don't. I'll... you'll see. Oh, you will so see.

Yeah, that's what I figured. :)

Anyway, it's way too hard for me to pick a single game. Zelda: Majora's Mask is the probably the best game I've played overall in the last ten years, but it doesn't really sum up the noughties since it already looked dated when it came out in 2000 (and I didn't played it until 2004).

I could do a list, but it would be very hard to narrow it down to even ten games...

Alright I admit it, it was a thinly veiled excuse to try and pump some life into the forum...and do a catchup thread on people's game tastes. You got me. Fair cop.

Interesting choices so far but given we've two (nearly 3) entire console generations in the last decade I'm not seeing games I thought I'd see in people's lists.

Hey man, I gave you one from each gen !

It has to be Oblivion though - I remember taking my dog for a walk in the park, walking past a huge plant and thinking "Oh, that's . I need some of that to give to that guy and finish a mission" before reminding myself that I was in the real world. Some games have made me think I'd quite like to have lived in the gameworld, but only Oblivion has made me forget it actually was a gameworld.

There's a fairly good mix of various generations but I meant I'm not seeing the games I fully expected to see. No Halo, no COD, no Forza so far...

I should kick myself up the arse for forgetting a couple though.

Rallisport Challenge 2. Still the most fun I've had getting a car sideways in the last ten years. Such a brilliant game.

Midtown Madness (something I spent a hell of a lot of time at LANs playing, enjoyed every minute)

Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 (certainly one of the best RTS I've ever played)

Operation Flashpoint (2001) would be my pick, nothing has redefined first person shooters since and redefined them in the way I wanted them to be. Huge maps, large scale conflict, tons of vehicles, amazing editor, great multiplayer, more "realistic" gameplay and lots of fun.

I'm prepared to ignore the many bugs (most of which got sorted) as there's no other game I've spent so much time playing co-op.

This weekend is when I fire up ArmA2 again for the first time in ages, it should be running a lot better than when I last tried (better hardware and patches) but it still won't match how much Operation Flashpoint means to me.

Please note what Codemasters put out last year, is NOT Operation Flashpoint despite what is written on the box, it's bollocks and sullies the name of the original.

Big ask, looking for 1 game out of ten years. Mine would probably PGR2 - it pips RSC2 purely because of the "two games for the price of one" aspect

Perfectly balanced racing challenges, great multiplayer, impressive graphics, plus the original and best Geometry Wars is in there too :-D

I'm seriously pissed off that my DLC has been lost on that one. The manner in which MS customer support handled my queries about that this year are a prime reason for my giving up on the 360

For me it's WoW, GTA3 and CoD...

WoW became the benchmark (and doom) for all MMORPG for good or worst with the quality seal of Blizzard and high production values that we known from previous games, just overtook anything that was on the market and forced all that came after to readapt to the new reality.

GTA3 created an all new genre (the open world crime sim), since it launched the number of wannabe pretender to GTA crown has grown in a exponentional way... Saints Row, Red faction, Mercenaries, Saboteur, Bully just to name a few... And above all it was fun, had a great map (Yes Vice City hills, you know what that is? HILLS) and an awesome main PC (didn't speak, you made your own story and dialogs).

CoD... Well, you know CoD, took a genre that was fun but most of the time brainless and introduced highly scripted sequence that made you feel like you where in a classic war movie (Saving private Ryan, Thin Red line, The longest Day).
It was awesome, until it went Michael Bay with CoD4... :(
Now every game want to go CoD way... :(

This are the games for me that marked the 00s!
