I'm not sure what it is about this latest developer diary but I think rallying may be a little more prominent in this game.

I notice the pivot point question doesn't really get answered but from the reaction I think that's a no to central pivoting... :-)

I would love a return to Colin McRae Rally game, losing all the extra shit that isn't rally... WRC proved it can be done (although really ugly done)!

Really hope they focus as much on actually rally driving as is suggested in the trailer. I would be fine with some trial races as well, but please no boring circuit destruction derbies.

Judging by the footage on the front page story, you'll get real rallying this time round . Gotta love any game that gives you those insane rally cars of the 80s!

Still don't trust 'em. Codies race team have totally lost the plot - none of their recent games even come close to the goodness of TOCA 2, Colin McRae Rally or TRD 2 :-(

Seems to be decent. Think I might even buy it at full price.

Just been replaying Dirst 2, which you get free with Dirt 3 via steam.

Have upgraded my PC since I last played it, and have to say it looks gorgeous. Looking forward to seeing D3.

There are some more videos on the Youtube channel I linked to earlier.

Apparently especially the Gymkhana part is a lot easier with a controller than with a wheel. Not sure if anyone here actually uses a wheel.

If this gets scores in the 8s and 9s I will pick it up. The presentations seems a lot better than in Dirt 2 and I feel like some not-too-serious off-road racing.

For some reason I'm suddenly excited for this.

I loved the first one and completed it but didn't play the second one for very long as I think I exhausted myself on PGR4 and GRID around the same time. But I'm ready for a racing game now having not played one properly in a while.

I did really enjoy Dirt 2 but like virtually all rally games, once you have raced on every track it became a little dull. Probably pick this up though as I do enjoy rally games.

Wish they would do a direct sequel to the TOCA series though, GriD was good but not great

Dirt 2 was awesome. It might not have had that much real point to point rallying in it, but what there was really put me in mind of Rallisport Challenge in places.

Plus I did actually do a fair job of kicking ass online (once I'd unlocked that bizarre thing that looked like a cross between a buggy and a bulldozer)

Very much looking forward to DiRT 3 and a good look at the new Ego engine in action. Really hope the London / Battersea tracks make a return appearance in this too

I will, I promise. :D

Bought a cheapish wheel, to have a go on iRacing, but have spent most of the time 'dirting' it.

I know it's pure arcade rallying, but it's so much fun. Anyone picking this up on PC?

Wonder why this hasn't had a demo yet?

Big releases never seem to get demoed these days, just awful stuff. And usually not till after release :(

Played the DiRT 2 PC demo last night, feck me it really does look gorgeous.

Does anyone know whether this has indirect online play, i.e. racing against your friends ghosts or at least times?

The lack of locations is a bit of a shame. Four locations is in my opinion not enough for a rally game at this stage. Even V-Rally on N64 had more than that. This doesn't even include a Corsica stage. :(

Just watched the Gametrailers review and looked at the FAQ on the Dirt 3 forum. There is no mention of those two game modes unfortunately.

The Videogamer does mention these modes

time trials and single-events can be tackled if that's your thing (complete with ghosts and leaderboards as expected)

Gave this a good go over the weekend, first thing to say is that it looks great, nice and smooth with little noticeable pop-up (I don't actually noticed tears in games and frame-rates I only notice if there is stuttering, I like to think I am lucky in that respect)

The handling is really what you would expect from a Dirt title, bordering on arcade but with enough control to give the impression of simulation, this is more noticeable in the Gymkhana areas, so really, if you can drive a virtual car around in most racing games with no problems, you will have no problems here.

The game itself is split into seasons and these seasons are split again into events, with 4 or 5 "events" within the events, these range from point-to-point, Trailblazers, RallyX, Trucks and Gymkhana, higher you place, the more reputation points you get, get so much and you reputation rises giving you access to more events and teams, the teams basically giving you better cars as you go along. Each even is then finished off with a head-to-head final.

It does feel a little, well, lonely and without structure, gone is your little mobile home, you now have a menu and some voices talking to you, the seasons themselves just feel like random events with no real structure to progression, pick an event type, race it, get rep points, go to the next, feels like a step backwards in my opinion.

I found I got most fun from just doing the time trials and getting my name on the leader boards (I am the best in the world on one track, but then only 4 others have actually placed a time but I will bask in any glory I can get!) going back and thinking where you can get an extra 10th or 2 is one of the great aspects of rally driving and when more people start placing times, the better this will becoming, especially as you can have up to 5 ghosts, the WR holder, your PB and up to 3 friends PB's.

That'll do for now, haven't been able to try multiplayer yet as PSN is still down and I can't redeem my code, oh and Gymkhana, whilst a great addition, is HARD, hopefully it will click soon but I am having a lot of trouble trying to do controlled spins and donuts, fun though, if frustrating

Good stuff Fletche, great first impressions.

Is there much weight to the rumours that there are only 4 distinct world 'zones' to play in? I thought that sounded a bit tight, and sounds a bit like the game's been strip-mined for DLC...

I think the bit I'm most looking forward to is the gymkhana mode - if the car handling is as sweet as it looks then it should be superb.

Bit of an arse that this didn't get a demo before release. Mind you, that seems to be becoming the norm lately. Even EA (who are usually pretty good at putting out demos) didn't bother with Shift 2

Are you playing with a wheel, by the way?

Well so far I have raced in Norway, Finland, Kenya, USA, which equates to Forest, snow, Desert and err construction site, Battersea is reserved for Gymkhana.

Forgot to mention the weather effects, they are fantastic, driving at night in a snow blizzard is something every gamer should experience.

@Syrok I play with a controller, never got on with wheels for some reason

Ahhh that sounds pretty promising then. Lord knows where people are getting this 'only 4 areas' thing from then.

Nice to hear Battersea's back. Loved it as a quick trials track so it should be ace as a Gymkhana venue.

Wonder if the new Rally minis have made it into the game somewhere...

Good, good. I don't have a wheel either, so it's good to hear that it works well enough with a controller. :)

My copy is in the post so I'm rather looking forward to it, 360 version for me but I'm sure I'll pick it up on Steam when it goes on sale.

DiRT2 was a freebie with my graphics card and it does still look great.
