Oh my, new details on the PSP2 then:

A la the mythical front page

Time for a bit of a sweepstake on the price. £600?

It certainly looks like the PSP2 is going to be a powerful, feature-packed piece of kit.

Expensive - certainly, but £600 would be suicidal! Something in the £200's would be excellent, but I wouldn't have an issue dropping ~£300 on one, provided the launch games were enough to get me excited.

I might pay more for PS2 compatability and the promise of a substantial number of titles at reasonable prices soon after launch.

Consider me very excited!

I'm gonna aim for £300 in the sweepstake.

PSP Go was officially £250 at launch, but it was more like £200 online (that's how much I paid for mine).

I reckon PSP2 will be somewhere in the £280-£350 region, they'll market it as a high-end multimedia device again with internal storage this time (around 32GB at least, hopefully).

One thing I've not seen mentioned anywhere yet is what physical media it uses (if any) - surely it's not just going to do 3G downloads or WiFi only ffs!

£349-£399 is my guess, plus a £10pm 3g contract which will be mandatory since there will be no user replaceable sim card.

Hoping the 3G's an opt out. No bloody way do I want to pay £10 just for the privilege of downloading stuff extremely slowly.

Bet it wont be an opt out. Perhaps it will be bundled with network play or some other subscription but I'm sure they'll make you pay for it even if you don't need it.

Hmmmm if they do, I bet an alternative version will come out not long afterwards that has no 3G. I'd definitely be waiting till then.

I think it'd be very unwise to make 3G compulsory as they'd potentially sever a chunk out of their market (kids whose parents won't want to sign up to some monthly sub just to keep the thing ticking over). Mind you, this is mad uncle Sony we're talking about. I'm just moderately surprised the thing isn't powered by raw onions and only comes in one shade of lime green.

Can't see it TBH, but if that's true it'd probably kill my interest in the device.

I'm sure they'll have separate versions in that case, like the iPad.

Wouldn't surprise me to hear 'em announce more than one SKU.

Guess we'll all find out on thursday. I'm fully expecting at least one official statement that makes me sigh "Oh FFS Sony! WHY!"

If not more than one.

Have to say I agree with Kay and the others that if this was the case, there would also be a wi-fi only version of the hardware. No chance people in general would put up with this for a handheld. Unless you mean "bundled with some other optional subscription".

Far more interested in this than the new DS. Basically just waiting to see how Monster Hunter evolves with it.

It'll be interesting to see what games are announced on the thing. If Codies are working on it, a portable DiRT 3 could be in the offing (and would be very welcome).

I'm also wondering if EA aren't skipping broader support for the 3DS in favour of just working on the PSP2 instead.

There's rumours of new portable Wipeout and Motorstorm games which would potentially get me interested, but I'd love to see something wholly new and original that suits the portable platform more than just a bunch of big console games shoved in the shrink-o-tron.

£299.99 and if out by the summer perhaps a £249.99 by Xmas / Easter.

Can't see it having 3G personally, would lose focus. More interesting is the media argument. disc/cart/download.

I'm thinking download, but this would be very limiting for Sony. Have there been any stats banded about from the PS store? Does it do well enough to sustain a whole platform? I don't know anyone that has PSPGO ??

I think the PSP store has improved of late. AFAIK all new releases appear a few days before they hit retail, and Sony's done a decent job of releasing most of the older PSP titles.

That said, aside from a few exceptions, pricing's still not competitive enough (new release PSP games go for about £18 at Amazon). I'm hoping for a physical media-based system, personally.

Hopefully we'll all know in 24h

Is it just me or is the PSP2 (ahem, NGP) sitting in a bit of a curious middle-ground between a true handheld/portable and the larger tablet devices? To me it just seems to sit quite awkwardly between two stools - too big to be properly portable (like a phone), but too small for really being able to comfortably game with it (the twin analogue sticks are nice but I still think it'll be arm ache-inducing, simply because there's nothing to properly 'grip' on the back of the device.

I do like the touch pad on the back of the unit though, I'm not entirely sure how easy it'll be to use but it does seem like a smart solution to the problem of trying to control games on a touch screen without obscuring half of the screen with your hand.

Overall though I just don't really see what it brings to the table that's new and interesting - and I'm not really sure where it fits in the market between Nintendo and Apple (and Nokia, and everyone else).

Overall pretty impressed, although it does look as though Sony have shoe-horned as many different 'features' into the PSP2 as possible.

Really hoping for a 2011 launch and a decent array of games. Apparently it's compatable with PSN purchases for PSP, although no mention of whether it'll play PS2 'classics'.

In terms of size - I'm not complaining about the size of the screen, but how does it compare dimensions-wise to, say, the PSP1000?

The thing that tasks me about the NGP is that all the games (or theoretical games) I've seen announced for it AREN'T the sort of games you want to be playing on a portable. The PSP1 had the same problem. Big sprawling time-consuming games like GTA Liberty City Stories were marvelous but not the sort of game you could spend hours playing on a PSP1 (more because your bloody hands would fall off than because the game was a bad conversion).

Likewise, I can't imagine playing something like Killzone, Call of Duty or Resistance 3 on the NGP - simply because those are games that A) work best as multiplayer experiences and B) require hours sunk into 'em.

Like you said Neko, it's like Sony don't quite know what to make the machine - a kick ass netbook-style-games-machine or a fairly high spec console in its own right.

To answer my own question - PSP1000 was 170x23x74

So about a centimetre wider and taller, but about half a cm thinner... Not as bad as I feared.

4-5 hours according to EG.

I also quite like the idea of a touch-sensitive area on the back of the device.

I don't understand the touch sensitive thing on the back. I think I need to see some demonstrations to understand wtf it will be used for.

I'll admit to being disappointed. I was really hoping for a different form factor, the original one was fine for about 20-30 mins play but after that it ALWAYS gave me crampy claw hand. Looks like it'll be the same dealio here.

Will I be getting this or a 3DS for Vince at xmas? hmm... ;D
