Official name is Dark Souls. Details from Famitsu this week (via NeoGAF):

- This is the official title of what was previously Project Dark

- This time they want to increase the amount of field exploration in the game.
- All fields are seamless, so whatever you can see, you can reach and explore. If you see a fortress or castle walls in the distance, you can eventually get there.
- There will be no map display in the game, just a position display marker.

- They aim to make the game just as challenging than Demon's Souls, but also just as rewarding when you succeed. The sense of achievement is important.

- The gameplay will be similar to Demon's Souls in concept, where it's about trial and error and learning from your mistakes to play better.

- The game does not share the same world and story as Demon's Souls.
- The game will not use the same format as Demon's Souls in terms of having 5 worlds connected via a hub.

- Instead all maps in the game will be linked seamlessly in a connected world. The pace of the game will feel more about exploration and discovering locations, which you can then go inside into a dungeon or whatever and explore the interior further.
- There will be more complex level designs in the game using more vertical design in areas and such.

- The world setting is based on medieval dark fantasy, and will contain themes like "high fantasy of kings and knights", "death and the depths of the earth", and "the flames of chaos".

- The character creation process will not be class based.
- The play style of the player character will have much more freedom this time.
- There will be many more spells and items, and the animation and uniqueness of weapons will also be increased.

- The online elements are very similar to Demon's Souls. There is cooperative and PvP.
- You can still leave messages, and see players who died at various places.
- There will be no Soul Tendency this time because they don't want to have to use dedicated servers to handle that shit again.
- Instead this time there will be more features allowing players to engage in "mutual role playing" which they say are still under wraps. They'll reveal more when it's time.


And it's multiplatform I believe.

Can't wait. Demon's Souls was fantastic. :)

So a sort-of sequel to Demon's Souls. This is awesome news!! Loved DS, so this'll have to be a day one purchase!

Just don't make it too hard :)

a) How long is the first game?

I think it took me about 25 hours or so. I imagine the length could really vary.

I personally think Demon's Souls is unmissable and if you like the sound of it - gloomy medieval / gothic bastard hard incredibly immersive and satisfying RPG - you ought to try it. It's an odd comparison but in my mind I come back to something like Shadow of the Colossus for a game that similarly immersed me in something rich and strange.

Though it is very tough, I don't think I got frustrated once with the game / its mechanics. More my stupidity and needless risk-taking.

Don't hesitate if you see it for a good price.

As FF said, definitely worth getting. It's hard, but never unfair and every death simply makes you more experienced and better prepared.

25 hours is a bit shorter than me - current 35+, although not yet finished. It's a game where some people will happy sink in 100+ hours, through multiple playthroughs.

Essential purchase, and pretty cheap at Zavvi at the moment...

It may well have been 35+ hours to be honest. I know I certainly didn't rush through, and as you say, you can certainly expect a few "training" runthroughs of a level before you get to grips with it!

@ilmaestro: you can definitely play it in far fewer than 80 (though as FP says you could happily play for more, too). And £15 is a bloody steal!

Wonderful game.

Never did get a chance to play Demon's Souls, so yeah, looking forward to this - although it won't help that Skyrim is coming out so soon afterwards.

I tried to like DS but there wasn't much in it to draw me back; one day I just loaded something else and never went back to it. Didn't miss it in the slightest.

From what I've read DS wasn't the most accessible of games - seems like it needed lengthy sessions to get the most out of (especially with no pause function), not sure I would have had the time for that. Hopefully this one will be a touch more accessible in that respect, without it compromising the "hardcore" gameplay too much.

I think the "hardcore" thing was overblown. It just punished you quite hard in terms of penalties for dying, but otherwise, nothing unfair.

Not to mention there's always the option of calling in some online co-op backup!

Agree - tough but never unfair. Most levels took quite a few goes to get through, although I did manage to do some first time ^_^

I suspect a lot of people gave up before even completing 1-1 (or getting killed in the 'tutorial', which in many respects is the most challenging level.

Awesome game, and already pre-ordered the Dark Souls Special Edition from Game.

Yeah, I reckon 1-1 broke a lot of people's spirits. I started off as the rogue and had a rather tough time of it, but it was really addictive, because each time you retry you get more right.

I mean, actually, there was a lot in that game that was fairly easy, once you got used to it.

What I LOVED about playing 1-1 the first few times was having a generally tough time with these pansy-looking zombie enemies, and then suddenly you turn this corner and there's GIGANTIC DRAGONS in the distance! Amazing moment.

Yeah, I found 1-1 the most rewarding part of what I played, gradually getting further each time, and getting used to what seemed a fairly non-typical game system.

This is probably my most anticipated game this year, despite the fact I gave up on the first, I think I got to world 4 but found I didn't have the time needed to invest in the game but with Mrs Fletche studying hard this year I have to do something to keep me amused :o)

Loved Demon's Souls even if it was as hard as nails, the atmosphere was something that is rare in video games, IE. Good, the sense of loneliness and isolation was unlike anything I have felt since playing ICO and SOTC.

I just hope that they have kept everything that made the first game great and simply added to that although looking at the previews it seems that is the case

Flame Lurker was annoying. Don't thing I would have been able to beat without knowing the few places where he can't go.
I think if this game was flawless it would have been a lot more difficult. ^.^

Flamelurker was the hardest boss I've faced so far, not helped by a long and difficult journet just to get to his fog gate. Even the Tower Knight took fewer attempts.

Not finished 5-X or 1-4 mind...

The bosses of 5-x aren't too bad. Everything else is though. ^.^

I had the most problems with Man Eater and getting to 4-1. Haven't finished the game yet though. Can't get passed the dragons in 1-4 (I think that's the level).
