Oooh now wouldn't that stuff the Wii 2 strategy up...

According to Develop (industry online news site), EA's got the next Xbox on desks at one of its core developers and though EA and MS are keeping schtum, big announcements are expected at E3.

Thoughts?

custom PC boards or actual dev machines?

Awesome.

I've said for years the way to kill sony is to get a new console out 3 or 4 years before they can afford to.

Sony is fucked, if the rumour is true!

With this entire perfect shitstorm they got them selfs into there is no way they can release the PS4 any time soon.

Anyway I'm completly out of the arms race in gaming rigs... I won't be buying NGP, PS4, POO2, XBN, PC rig et al.

The rise in taxes and the IMF mesaures are going to kill gaming and the lifestyle I have... :'(

I would rather see a new XBOX in 3 years. (Same for Sonys next console). Would be great if they wouldn't release all console in the same year.

I look forward to COD 9.

Exactly the same but with slightly higher quality textures.

EA has rubbished the rumour (which you'd expect, I guess) but so has a "source close to EG" so I'm happy regarding this as untrue.

I actually think a big battle between MS and Ninty would be ideal for Sony, who would become the only budget console option on the market, and would be in a much more advantageous position when they eventually do launch a new console.

Chances that you will only be able to buy a bundle from Game at launch in the region of 1000?

I still can't believe the 750 bundles they put together for the 360's launch. They're worse criminals than whoever's shagged by PS3 online gubbins.

I can't remember how much we bought the PS2 for, but it was at launch, from Dixons, and it was a bundle offer (including DVDs... exciting at the time) so I'm sure we were taken for mugs.

I'll only be allowed one if they launch too close together. Not fair!!

Even if this rumour were true, how on earth would a dev kit in a rough PC shell suddenly be ready for a public unveiling in just four weeks time? I'm sure that, in light of the Wii 2's impending unveiling, MS will definitely make some noises at E3 about a new console, but I doubt we'll be seeing that console anytime soon.

Because they announce specs and a mock up of the design, same as was done with the PS3 and the rest. Doing that a year before isn't unusual.

Don't think they will though.

EA calls the claim a 'complete fabrication' according to Edge.

Though if there's going to be a NextBox within the next few years you'd at least hope that some developers other than MS' internal studios are doing something for it.

Likelihood is that MS won't be doing to the 360 what they did to the original Xbox anytime soon.

The new Wii? As this is Nintendo, can I assume it'll be just the same as the old console, only ten percent thinner and in pink?

MS already has my cash for the next Xbox, however.

Yep mine too, even with the red ring of death I'd still leap at the chance to grab whatever MS does next.

Assuming of course that they can produce the bloody thing in sufficient numbers at release to ensure that big high street chains don't lock you to some sort of retarded bundling deal.

I've always thought all they need to do for the nextbox is up the clock speed, bung a newer gfx card in, a few more cores (maybe) and some more ram. The actual architecture or API stuff doesn't have to change, so it could be fully backwards compatible.

The real HD could start there :)

Aye I'm thinking that might actually be quite a shrewd move. I doubt anyone would object to that s'long as it didn't come with an arse-reamingly expensive price.

If MS really wanted to pep things up, they could bung in an SSD (though they're still prohibitively expensive for bigger drives), a BR drive for optical, quieten the whole thing down a bit - and stick with XBL for both 360 and Xbox Next.

That'd do most gamers.

The bolded bit is probably the most important thing for me. Don't need a graphical leap (though it would be nice), I just want them to be near silent when I'm playing games and in particular when I'm watching movies.

Ditto. Particularly when I'm playing games and want to concentrate on the music, sound effects or dialogue with the sound turned down a fair old notch (in the evenings I usually have to use headphones to avoid waking my nipper up)

The 360 is sodding noisy if you play games from disk (and sometimes you do simply because you just want a quick blast on something from your games library without the inevitable 15 minute wait for the thing to install)

The PS3 is quieter - till those fans start kicking in or you get that undampened Blu Ray or Hard Drive "clonk" noise when either is seeking.

Oddly enough the Wii is probably the quietest of the three consoles but I guess it's not exactly thrashing the crap out of its GPU :)

My PS3 makes hardly any noise. But we keep it out in the open.

I do - mine's one of the first run old fat 'uns. The new slim ones are almost silent.

Mostly it's the br drive that's noisy and the extra fans only seem to kick in if I'm watching movies, or playing games at the height of summer...

Still, as noisy as consoles are, nothing compares to my PC when it kicks things up a notch. 8 fans aren't quiet by any means :)
