No one in it to win it? I'm quite surprised as I thought Brink would be a lot of people's cup o' tea

Was pretty meh about it till I saw the character customisation stuff and the RPG-like progression. Anyone else picking this up?

Pre-ordered. I've thought it looks fantastic since day one. That and LA Noire for me this month.

(Has just ordered Mortal Kombat too)

Just joined Lovefilm, so going to get into the habit of renting more than buying, for a while... but, yeah, Brink was always a Day One.

May's looking busy towards the end but I'll be having this, a bit of DiRT 3 and a bit of LA Noire.

That should see me through for a bit.

I really want this, but will try to stick to my policy of waiting at least a week after release to check reviews, and patches before buying.

Some decent prices testing my resolve though ( 21 here )

Ditto on the 'wait a week' thing, though may's going to test my resolve.

Saw it running at the EG Expo, couldn't get to give it a try as it was so busy but I was so impressed I have PC and 360 versions pre-ordered.

Yet another FPS? What's so special about this one, then?

Probably the RPG elements and character customisation.

I say 'probably' because it's quite tough to find much about it ahead of the embargo other than some extremely slick visuals and some quite cool free-running style gameplay.

I'm taken by the art style, quite weird and 2000AD-esque.

Launch trailer.

There are plenty more videos at Gamersyde.

From watching them Brink is basically a team based multiplayer fps. The campaign mode looks like it is has very similar structure to that seen in Unreal Tournament 3, where cutscenes are used to link a bunch of multiplayer matches.

The action in Brink is class based which not only determines what weapons you can use, but also how nimble you are at free running around the maps. Also it might just be me I think there is a TimeSplitters vibe to the character models.

I'm actually hoping for a bit of a Shadowrun vibe from it.

Early word is that if you want this for the single player then you might want to rethink. It's very MP focused.

Shadowrun was a thing of beauty.

I loved Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, which splash damage also made. I really hope Brink turns out good, and there's no first week server disasters.

Visit the 2nd link I posted and watch the training videos (especially the 'Get ready for BRINK' video). They give a very detailed picture of the gameplay, weapons, controls, game modes, classes etc.

It looks like it will be great fun online, but I'm not sure about the single player mode. It will depend on how good the bot ai is and whether there is much variety in the gameplay. Not that I will be buying it anyway. I'm waiting for Lego Star Wars 3 to hit the bargain bins. It could be some time though as it is still quite high up in the charts!

Sounds like the 360 version at least needs some patching ( Ars Technica ).

Yeah they refused to review it didn't they?

Real mix of scores but I'll keep my order in place for the 360 versh.

Loved one of the comments I read about the character designs. They really are Bo Selecta-inspired aren't they!

Also shit that there are no female characters. Boo!

Mine's being picked so I can't cancel it - but yep I reckon it's going to drop in price quicker than an end-of-day clearout at Dunkin' Donuts.

The reviews seem a bit all over the place, I managed to kill my PC pre-order (PC version has horrendous problems according to GAF) but GAME sent my 360 copy first thing this morning, which is bloody weird to say the least.

Ditto with my copy. I guess they're shipping 'em ASAP to try and stop people cancelling their orders in light of the reviews apres embargo.

I read SP's review on EG. It's the standard EG stuff. Something that slams the game all the way through then rounds it off with a positive "Yeah it's rilly good, 8/10!"

Rubbish excuses aside, it's another case where it's extremely telling that there's no pre-release demo but then again demos seem to have dropped off lately anyway. A heck of a lot of recent big releases and even secondary stuff haven't been demoed.

Guess I'll find out tomorrow...

Oof. More details seem to be emerging. A tiddly, tiny 8 maps for Multiplayer (So there's inevitably going to be a shitload of premium DLC then? Quelle surprise). Buggy 360 versions (texture pop in, slowdown, tearing, all the usual Bethesda specials :)

Pisser, once again a lesson learned, should've cancelled my preorder.

...actually, just hit the cancel button and it didn't say nay, so fingers crossed...

Bet it'll turn out to be great now :)

I've probably asked this on here before, but once again - why do people pre-order games? I just don't get it. Unless you're a big fan of a particular series, and/or it's a sequel by a reputable developer that is guaranteed to be good, or maybe you've found it for a silly price that you just couldn't pass up... why bother?

It's not like we ever get any stock shortage issues with games. Hell, nowadays you can wait for the embargo to be lifted, read a few reviews, then order online and still get it only a day or so late. Surely that makes sense? I don't mean to criticise or anything, it's just always baffled me!

I mostly preorder just to save myself the ballache of having to remember release dates. I don't hang around on EG any more and the only time I see release dates is if a big release crops up either on here or gets muttered about on Twitter.

I rarely bother to preorder anything months and months ahead (mostly because release dates chop and change all over the place) so for me it's purely a memory thing. I absolutely do not bother to preorder on the basis of the 'tat' you get from various e-tailers as an exclusive - Christ, who would!

The only other reason I preorder is if a price seems ludicrously cheap (as with Brink, the place I ordered it from had it for 34.99 - a lot cheaper than other sellers, so I made sure I ordered it at the cheap price in case the buggers hiked the price up later - which has happened in the past...)

Stuff that contributed to me cancelling:

1) Poor AI - which for the extremely limited Single Player campaign is pretty damming.

2) 8 multiplayer maps - Which sounds tiddly. Very tiddly with a lot of stuff held back for DLC

3) Majority of gametime spent on character customisation and progression. Which is great if the game doesn't rapidly turn into a grind with extremely samey gameplay

4) No lobby - which means organising games, swapping hosts etc goes back to the heady days of old PC FPS games

5) A lot of patching required. I'm reading stuff about laggy gameplay, missing textures, draw in, tearing, choppy framerates.

The more I read (and I've yet to find anything that's massively positive, even EG's love-in) the less I want. Even cheaply.

A pity, because I think I'd have enjoyed the character creation stuff.

Roll on Rage.

It's a team based game, CoD players probably don't know what that means. ;-)

Ha, no, not because of that. But because the first mission just throws you in at the deep end with no explanation of the controls, who's doing what, how to do what and it felt like I'd been dropped in an Unreal Tournament Assault map rather than a single player FPS campaign - which clearly it's not.

I'll play it properly tonight - I got cut short yesterday.

From what I've read elsewhere, the challenges act as the tutorial so they're a good place to start.
