Anybody else tried out Google's new soacial networking site Google+?

I've been giving it a go over the weekend after one of my mates dropped me an invite. It feels like a less busy Facebook, but with more control over who can see what you post. You add your friends into 'circles' and use these to decide who you will allow to view each post you make.

The Android app is nicely put together too. I can't really comment much more on how good Google+ is as I've only got one friend so far and he has hardly posted anything yet! The one thing I'm not sure about is how are Google going to convince people to leave Facebook for Google+, especially if Facebook implement their own version of circles?

If any of you regulars fancy trying out Google+ then I'd be more than happy to send you an invite. I'll be able to set up an AATG circle then ;-)

If I'm reading correctly and you can create separate circles - i.e. one with real-life contacts, another with online buddies, another for work etc. - with different posts/info in each one, then I can see it being quite useful.

Not sure if I can be bothered trying out yet another social network though, as Facebook is a load of crap (both the site itself and 80% of its users, I find). Twitter seems better, mainly for news and info, but never tried it myself.

Also, it's Google - aren't they supposed to be all evil and stuff nowadays?

That's it exactly!

It really is just Facebook, but with more control over who sees what.

Add me to a circle and then I can add you to one of mine. You get the chance to do it when you send an invite, but I forgot ;-)

Facebook has never and will never appeal to me, I don't think, and this doesn't seem to offer anything different enough. Twitter is the only social networking device I really see any value in, specifically because it's not so much about invites and circles and whatnot.

Against Facebook they are the lesser of two evils.

On one hand I want Google to win for the sake of people moving to a site with better coding and better privacy. On the other hand the dominance of Google in every internet avenue would worry me.

I've been using it for about a week now and as nice as it is, it's deathly quiet in my stream, with only ten or so 'people' (it's nice not to be using the word 'friends').

The Circles idea is pretty much Facebook lists, but presented with a much more intuitive UI. Still not sure I can be bothered to post stuff that I would only want a very specific group to read; I long ago assumed everything I posted on the Internet was public, and can't see that changing any time soon.

Oh, and remember to disable re-sharing if you don't want your nicely targeted post to be disemminated with the rest of the known universe.

Invites for Google+ are only needed at the moment because it is in testing, a bit like how Gmail was at the start. Once you are on Google+ it works in a very similar manner to Twitter. You can follow whoever you want without them having to accept any sort of friends request. The difference with Twitter is that everybody has the option to limit who sees what they post with the use of circles.

Now that I have a few more people in my circles Google+ is becoming a more interesting place to visit!

Ah, interesting, cheers. I still like the bare-bones approach of a twitter feed over the idea of a "page" or whatever to manage, but at least that is something.

Quite like this. For starters it doesn't seem to have the 'mong' appeal that Facebook does. The separate 'circles' idea is a good one (particularly if you don't want your family and loved ones exposed to a bit of ripe language and constant gaming banter). It feels pretty barebones but I'm sure there are plans to pollute the API with all manner of social networking nastiness (games probably, blech!) which will cause the whole thing to become a glitchy wasteland of graphical abhorrence just like Facebook and MySpace before it.

It'll never compete with Facebook, it's too ingrained in the world's subconscious at the moment (I can't believe how it's become the best way of pushing products at people by the world's biggest multinationals, and can't believe even the Beeb are shrugging off their own online presences to leap into bed with Facebook).

For the time being though it's like an extended Twitter and people don't seem to be too twattish on it yet.

I think the fact Facebook exists makes huge shifts more possible than ever. If Google+ buzz generates on FB, there's where the shift comes from.

And not to mention the immensely powerful launchpad that is the google.com home page.

It's not unprecedented that people will move home on the internet if a better service comes along. Just ask Myspace. :)

I remember looking for info on a band on Myspace, finding their site and thinking that someone had basically eaten a HTML manual, and shat the results onto my monitor. Horrible horrible thing, and won't be missed.

Wait, didn't Murdoch buy MySpace?

In 2005, for $580 million. And then sold it to Specific Media and Justin Timberlake (?!) for $35 million in June 2011.

So that's about a 6-year window that you were probably being spied on.

Two days in and I'm liking Google+ a lot. It would be great to some more of you AATG chaps on board!

A couple of things I would like to see improved. Firstly the Android app is seems to take ages to download the thumbnail pictures in the stream view. It is as if they aren't being compressed for mobile viewing like what happens with the Facebook app. I notice this especially when you only have a 2G signal.

I would also like the Google+ page header to update when you have a new notification, just like the Facebook and Twitter sites. Then if you see 'Google+ (3)' at the top of a tab you know you've got 3 notifications. I do like the fact that when you get a notification and click on it, you get shown the the relevant info in a drop down box.

Liking it too. Same sort of deal as Twitter with a bit more depth perhaps.

AATG has a google plus 1 thing on most of the articles now so fire 'em away!

I'm on it and have added a whole bunch of people but I haven't actually gotten into the whole habit of, you know, actually using the fucking thing yet.

I'm happy with Facebook for now and don't see it being usurped as it's so ubiquituous now, but we shall see.

I'm not sure I have room in my life for two social media devices.

Cheers for the invites guys, just signed up. It's a shame that I can't link it to my Hotmail account though. I never use my Gmail account.

Anyway, seems so nice and clean compared to Facebook. I guess I might as well start adding some people. Oddly enough I can't find any option to add the person whose invite I used to sign up!

Edit: Do we have an AATG circle thingy yet?
