I really think we ought to add in an Indie Games category to the thread category list.

Kerbal Space Program is awesome. Go and download it!

A few facts and tips to help you.

-Atmospheric drag occurs all the way up to 34.5km so any orbit's perigee must be greater than this or it will fail.
-You'll need to be travelling horizontally at about 2.4km/s at 40km to achieve orbit. At higher altitudes you can go slower.
-Correction burns are best made perpendicular to the pull of gravity, use the nav-ball horizon.
-If you are falling, burn in the direction of travel, if you are climbing or want to re-enter the atmosphere then burn the other way
-If you are in a high orbit and burn directly toward the planet you will gain speed and might not deviate enough to clip the atmosphere and you'll be stuck in a large and very eccentric orbit
-If you have trouble visualising any of this, go and play the attractor levels on Osmos

To fly further you need more fuel, but fuel is weight which requires more thrust which is more fuel and more weight. Build lean and with multiple stages. Solid boosters have more thrust but don't last very long. Use these when your rocket is at it's heaviest. You als want to use them for the initial launch as the liquid fuel boosters aren't strong enough. As you climb the rocket will get lighter as it burns fuel and jettisons stages. The atmosphere will get also get thinner and more thrust will go into accelleration instead of drag.

You may think that because of drag it's best to fly as slow as possible. That would be true if it wasn't for gravity. You want to deploy as much thrust as you can right off the bat. The further from the surface you get, the easier escape comes. Don't reduce throttle until you're almost free of the atmosphere.

If you are looking for a low orbit, tilt the rocket about 20 degrees when 10km from inner space (inner space starts at 34.5km). Gaining lateral momentum earlier is a waste as it gets lost to drag. As soon as you hit inner space, the rate of acceleration you will be capable of will increase dramatically and there will be zero drag.

Too much time. The game really needs a an option to accelerate time, I've never had tha patience to wait for a full orbit. It will get one eventually since they want to add moon missions at some point.

In the meantime I'll just play around with trying to land rockets vertically. Last time I tried it toppled over but the Kerbals survived.

I built a rather natty little space plane that I somehow fluked a landing on (looked a bit like an Eagle Transporter from Space 1999 but with a few extra boosters).

Trickiest part of the game seems to be ensuring that the weirder designs will hold together long enough for booster separations and stuff. Damned good fun though.

A few days ago saw some episodes of Space 1999... GoD I love the show but it desperately needs and HD remake!... :P

The sets look great as well as the uniform design still looks good but everything else looks awful, the monsters look what they are (most a guy in a suit or some puppet on strings) and if the crew touches the set it wiggles like jellow!

But I love the show!

I find this rocket is just enough to get a low-mid orbit. (= in-line detacher; - side detacher)

The big fuel stage is a bit tough to steer, mind. Use 'T' to toggle SAS on so you don't have to keep holding down 'F'. Set the Fuel engines to start burning at the same time as the solids and detatch the solids when spent.

Quite happy with the 100Km I got with a fairly simple rocket, the triple fuel engine combo with a second stage single fuel rocket and as it had such good velocity it kept going a long way when I finally let the command module off on its own. Fins at the bottom and SAS kept it very nice and stable so I could just concentrate on when to switch stages.

I do wish I'd found the symmetry button earlier in my building though!

Anyone got a good site for parts?

Only the site linked in the main front page article.

There are quite a few others people keep pimping at me but so far I've not had time to try them out.

Very addictive little game, it'll be interesting to see how they expand on it.

Where!? That's the problem I'm having. Oh, and actually piloting my rockets. I usually get a few km up before going into a total, incontrollable spin :(

Great fun though :D

Circle at the top of the screen on the left, by default it'll be a dot, keep clicking on it and it'll change into different pie segments to indicate how it'll add pieces in symmetry.

I think X may do the same as well.

There is now a moon (or 'Mun' in Kerbalese). That is all.

Stable orbit reached! o/

Found that there is a demo for this after watching Giantbomb's Quick Look. Wish could buy it, but they only accept PayPal.

Edit 6 hours later I've made it to the moon. A unmanned mission would have been wiser though... :)
