Been keeping an eye on this one for ages - Like the bastard love child of Limbo, Gravitar and Thrust but with a lot of nice looking physics puzzles, nasty baddies and an absolute truckload of exploring to do.

If the Summer of Arcade continues like this, I'll be needing more points!

Wonder if Fez will make a surprise appearance.

I saw a trailer for this the other day. If I had the time to play some fucking games at the moment, I'd be having this, Bastion and From Dust without any hesitation.

Love the B-Movie style of this. It looks like a game I'm going to be incredibly crap at. I quite enjoyed Pixeljunk Shooter 1 and 2 but this looks like it's in an entirely different league.

This is excellent. Downloaded more out of curiosity than anything. Smart demo immediately won me over.

Peej likes it too. Can't believe we're on the same page, for a change. :)

Just played through the demo and I'm certainly leaning towards a purchase as I rather enjoyed it.

It struck me as something I'd have played in the Spectrum era, it's like combo of Thrust and Starquake. If the Spectrum was able to do high res graphics and you could plug a dual analogue wielding game pad into a Kempston joystick interface.

/chuckles

I had a moment of annoyance with it last night, one single one where I just couldn't figure out why the game had dumped me in a spot without the required armaments, and there was no way of backing out.

Of course, the game's cleverer than that. There's more than one way to skin a cat and I soon navigated my way out of there.

Loving it though. As Whizzo said, this feels like an old Speccy game but in a good way - in the way that you start off on a journey with the thing not knowing quite how complex it's going to get.

There's so much to love about it though, from the B movie feel, to the controls, to the imaginative boss baddies and neat little ways of doing things. Bits feel like Limbo, very lonely and isolated with that nagging feeling that something scurrying under the surface of the planet is about to turn you into a pile of scrap, and some bits feel like Thrust / Oids / Gravitar in that you're forced to use a bit of grey matter as well as a fair amount of manual dexterity to achieve your goals.

So that's two for two titles in the Summer Arcade that I've bought in consecutive weeks. Not too sure about the rest of the offerings but this and From Dust have definitely floated my boat.

Got about half way through (but with plenty of back OCD tracking to be done). Enjoying it but there are one design issue that irks me.

Not having an aiming line of any sort coming from the ship causes me problems. With twin stick games I can always affect precise movement with the left thumb, but when it comes to aiming with the right I'm just not as good. I can be as much as 20 degrees off where I intend and don't realise until I actually shoot. It may be down to the asymetric stick placement on the pad, my brain mirroring the inputs that work for the left thumb. Some sort of aiming tool would help reduce this problem.

Yeah I find that a bit of a ballache as well, particularly for the missiles (which took me a while to get used to. Think I spent a lot of time firing the bloody things off and hitting nothing).

With the 'pellet gun' weapon, it would've been nice if the thing had the same laser aiming line that the analyser tool has.

I'm very impressed with the controls though. It's not quite as unforgiving as the traditional gravity and physics based cave shooters, but feels 'right'

Shortage of ritalin. And we allow fucktards to have an opinion.

I was going to raise an eyebrow at the fact I've hit more than 3000 posts here... and then I clocked the post counts of the two fiends directly above me.

Bloody hell, boys!

I virtually didn't post here last year, either, since I barely play games any more.

When we originally wrote the forum we came up with the idea of producing a simple piece of procedural code to fill the forum with comments and make it look busy and popular.

You're lookin' at it.

NY used to be up there with Peej but then decided to go back through the forum and delete a whole chunk of his history. He's a paranoid little so-and-so.

On a related note, has anyone topped my post count on EG yet? Surely by now someone must've. Morriss?

I don't even know who the regs are on the main EG forum these days, but checking the "EG fight" (once I remembered what your actual EG tag was, lol) thing, morriss hasn't yet so I guess he posts less these days. ecu hasn't passed you either, and I think he still posts a fair bit.

Sigh. This has finally hit a point which is really fucking aggravating me - to the point I'm tempted to quit. Not the directing rockets around slim mazes, but the redirecting of laser beams with crystals. Got to bounce a beam off about eight different sources. The claw control is starting to look very finicky (not helped by the small undulation of the ship), and half the time the crystals don't slip in place properly.

Whoever put this in needs fucking castrating.

OK, past it. Need to find something else to moan about now.

Oh yeah, why does it take my (third) 360 almost a minute to access my dlc games collection? Admittedly, there's less than a gig free on this 120gig drive, but it's been bad for a long time...

Hahah we really are in tune on this one. The final boss can fuck. Right. Off. with that shitty checkpointing.

It's gone from a great game, through a stage of being a mildly irritating game because of some poor decisions, to being something I'll never finish because of that last boss.

Grrr. And I so loved it at first!

Finally tried this yesterday, and I liked it very much! Looks gorgeous, great atmosphere, controls well... requires a bit of concentration to really get into it, but that's to be expected from a Metroidvania. However, the comments above are putting me off slightly - I like a bit of challenge, but not when it's down to dodgy game design.

So now I have to decide between this, Bastion and From Dust. All three seem good, but also have their flaws. Pity they're all 1200pts. Which one to play first?

Boss fights on this are a it of a pain, in places - and the way it swamps you with enemies when you're trying to do something that requires precision is annoying (but it doesn't happen often). From Dust is a fairly unique experience, but I haven't run back to it. Bastion... well, I've redownloaded it to give it another shot, based on everyone else's good words.

Actually, Kill Team is still my favourite xbla game for some time. Completed it yesterday. Decent bit of local co-op, too.

Yeah I hated the bit where...

Spoiler

...you're trying to manipulate some lens thing in the dark with your claw. You've got to attach the lens thing to four points in a big circular room with a nasty boss in the middle of it. Every time you energise the lens to burn out the elements around the boss, little spark creatures attack you. They're cunts to kill because only electrical energy from the lens thing kills 'em - and worse, the whole level is played in the dark as well - so the little spark things can still kill you when unlit.

I love the art direction but some of the level and puzzle design is utterly annoying and frustrating.

They also changed the mechanics of the grabber with respect to the lantern. Everywhere else in the game you can activate the grabber and then bump it into an object and it will still grab it. For the lantern, the grabber has to be touching it. For the mechanics to change so late in the game with no plot reasoning or payoff is a bad move. It also makes the Lantern Run game mode a pain in the arse.

I'm going to give it one more try later on tonight but if I don't nail it, I'll probably just chalk it up as one of those games I'll never finish.

I don't mind it being a tough game but tough and unfair just sucks really.

I get the impression that most of the 90+ reviews didn't get to the end or probably didn't even get past the initial few stages.

I had another go last night and I just cannot get past that last bastard. It crossed the line from being enjoyable, through being frustrating, to being downright fucking annoying and with enough things to annoy me as it is, I really don't need another one. So back to Mirror's Edge for now!
