So what do we all think of this based on the demo?

Lovely car handling. Tears like a complete bastard. But I just cannot get over how utterly bonkers the shift stuff is. It just doesn't fit with the game at all, a bit like the bonkers superweapons in Blur, it's that much of a jarring contrast between having a relatively nice looking real world setting, licensed cars, then some fucking weirdo that can metaphysically project himself into other drivers to take over their cars.

Sheesh, couldn't Reflections just hire someone who can do the out of the car bits rather than coming up with something this utterly bonkers?

I didn't like the handling at all. It didn't feel like the cars were really in contact with the road. Shifting from one car to another is however great. Actually just flying through the city zooming in and out is more fun than driving.
The story sounded completely bonkers...

PS: The game would infinitely better if it was styled like a 70s cop show with proper disco music. :)

When the guys who made Driver 3 give an interview explaining they released that game unfinished, but that this new one will be great, my opinion is that they can go fuck themselves. Not even wasting the bandwidth downloading the demo for this.

You should, oh you should...! It's about the most surreal thing you're ever likely to see in a driving game.

None of it makes sense! None of it at all. It's as mad as a box of otters

Wow, I really hated this, alot.
The handling was all over the place, the 'jumping' into others cars added nothing, it looked odd and the voicework was apalling.

The acting was terrible wasn't it! I think there must be some unwritten rule in voice acting for games that states "Game dialogue requires you to be over-earnest about EVERYTHING!"

Meant to have another go with this last night but succumbed to Bayonetta's charms instead.

God help me, I tried the demo.

It's ... fucking retarded, man. What a dumb premise. And the handling is worse than in Driver 3.

Quelle surprise.

The MP demo should be out today in Europe, I quite enjoyed the bonkers aspects of the single player but the multi is looking like a serious amount of good fun.

MP demo out now and is rather fun, it helps when you're the tagged car and people who are trying to catch you make terrible decisions about what to shift into or they can't drive around corners too well. :-D

I did wonder whether it might have that Midtown Madness vibe going on despite its shortcomings. Looks like it has.

Sounds like great fun for a bit of cops and robbers action. Still not touching it at launch though.

It'll probably review badly and be sub-20 pretty quickly I should think.

I have to say that it works fine just playing with randoms though so that's a nice change.

It's representation of Lombard Street (the famous twisty turny one) is hilariously wrong though, the shape of the road is fine but it's like a highway in width and certainly not what I saw when I was in San Francisco last.

However it was quite fun in a game of tag where the tagged car drove down there and two players blocked off each end with a bus and a car transporter. Unfortunately because of the aforementioned hugeness he still managed to keep hold of it.

Hah yep I remember laughing about Lombard St in the single player demo. I had to drive a whale of a Chrysler down that thing. Beautiful car but like all yank cars, cornered like a whale (Chrysler Sebring) and that road would test even a Fiat 500 (in fact you can try that in the demo if you wander off the beaten track a bit).

Definitely think this will drop in price rapidly. Out in 2 weeks innit?

As Whizzo said, the multiplayer really does have that Midtown Madness vibe to it.

I was insanely bad at it when I jumped into a game with four other randoms. It's a bit too easy to spend a lot of time jumping into other cars and not actually driving that much :) Hopefully the multiplayer modes flesh out enough to mean that you do have to actually drive a bit :)

Very enjoyable though. I'm warming to this a lot but I really don't think I could live with the shame of picking it up on launch day

(Psst: Idiot boy, you bought Driver 3 on launch day!)

Er, point!

So, this appears to be good then...
Anyone here getting it? It looks like the multiplayer is the good part, it still needs to be a cheapo purchase for me.
oh, and rather embarrassingly, tanner's jacket is exactly the same as my motorbike jacket.

I've put it on Lovefilm as a curiosity, but the SP demo just left me cold. Didn't bother with multi at all.

My ShopTo copy arrived yesterday, due to going to a pub quiz last night I only had about 40 minutes on it but I enjoyed it. The whole Life on Mars plot is rather well done with things happening in the "real" world impacting on what is going on in Tanner's mind. One of the first things you do is shift into an ambulance driver who is in a hurry to get the patient to hospital before his heart rate drops, collisions reduce it as well as time.

Obviously it's Tanner in the back and he's imagining it all, you get flashes of him in his hospital bed later as well.

Completely bonkers but I'm having fun.

(sigh) I swore I was going to wait till this was cheap but had some Amazon credit, and it was cheap enough...so..

Alright, I'm weak for yank muscle cars, I'll admit it.

B'sides, a welcome break from the head mashingly tough Deus Ex might definitely be just what the doctor ordered.

Going for a tenner in Game if you trade in Dirt 3 (et al).

Got a pal playing it who claims it's stunning and far better than the demo.

Think I can wait. Dead Island next week, then Skyrim and Rage. That's it for day one pre-orders this year.

Rage is definitely getting done. Not sure what else is hitting in September. Dead Island can FOAD I reckon, I think it's going to review poorly.

It also ignores the fact Tanner's own car has a spoiler.

....superb.

Absolutely loving the game, tons of different things to do, loads of cars and bonkers plot line thrown in as well. Loving it.

The demo impressed me a lot.

I can take a bit of graphical shonkiness for 60 FPS.

So it turned up yesterday and I dived straight in on Story Mode.

It's....fucking nuttier than a nut-packed nutty bar shat out of the back end of a slightly crazy nut-obsessed squirrel.

But you know what? Reflections know how to nail car handling for the big yank muscle. Tanner's car is bloody lovely to control. So tail happy but always on the edge of control / loss of control enough to keep you on your toes and allow you to, from time to time, showboat like a good 'un.

I couldn't care less about the plot (random ugly psychotic drug lord, half dead cop floating in the ether, convoluted explanation of why Reflections still can't do out-of-the-car stuff so opted for out-of-body instead)

Casting all those weird little foibles aside, it's great. No really and a huge pat on the back to you if you've got the will power to wait till this drops under 20 quid as you'll be in for a belated treat.

Most fun so far. A Fiat Abarth, off the top of a car transporter, jumping two cop cars and landing on top of a huge 57 caddy.
