Don't really understand the in's and outs of it but theres a well known PS3 hacker called Math who has had a bit of code "leaked". From what I've read it gives you access to the unique key from your PS3 (which can't be changed...although take that with a pinch of salt since apparently jailbreaking couldnt be patched out!).

What this would is allow is for an exploit to be run which will tell the PS3 to ignore any public keys (ie. the ones that got updated after the last hack) and so you can basically do what you want with it. Of course, Sony can upgrade the firmware so that games call on assets contained in the new firmware, but at that point, someone will just incorporate it in to a new custom firmware.

Read one comment that went along the lines of "this will basically make the PS3 as open as the PSP".

Hairy/peej, if this isnt the sort of thing you want on here, go ahead and delete.

I'm cool with this. We're not hosting dodgy files or linking to illegal downloads, it's just a discussion about what could or couldn't happen.

If you remember, a while back, I wrote a guide on how to soft mod your Wii.

Freedom of speech (within reason) and all that.

It might have been overstated now anyway. Now some of the initial "excitement" has died down, people are saying this isnt a holy grail (although it does represent progress). It also needs OtherOS installing which isnt that easy.

My quest for a console based XBMC continues.

Furbs have you looked into running XBMC off a jailbroken Apple TV? That's what I'm currently running and it works quite well. There's still a few minor glitches they need to resolve but it's still far better than any other solution.

I currently use this skin.

Hmmm interesting.

If I don't have an iPad/iPhone/iPod, is there an included remote?

Edit: Nevermind, just found out there is.

If only there was a firmware hack that made the Dual Shock 3 turn into a decent controller.

Furbs the silver brushed aluminium remotes you get with an Apple TV (which are only £90) are really lovely - just make sure you're not unlucky and get the dodgy white plastic ones. Which, incidentally, you can't use to jailbreak the ATV as it's missing a button you need.

You can also use your iPhone/iPad as a remote control which looks fantastic, though I haven't yet tried it myself.

I ended up buying a NAS box, sticking a couple of 1TB hard drives in it, jailbreaking my Apple TV and now I have access to all of my TV and Movies from any device in the house. I have my ATV connected to my big living room telly, can stream stuff through my 360 in my games room as XBMC also acts as a DLNA server, and I still have my soft-modded Xbox 1 in the bedroom.

It's perfect. Apart from the slight lag with navigating and the occasional crash.

If you're desperate for a media player box I can't recommend the WDTV Live HD highly enough. Does everything, subtitles, all formats, all streamed or from a local USB disk.
