...one of the worst games the action genre has yet suffered"

Uh-oh. Tell it how it is. Okay, so the quote's from IGN (via metacritic rather than direct - I do have some standards).

But still...wow. The first is pretty much my favourite action game of all time. The second suffered by comparison but held its own against similar titles.

The 3rd...well, take it away, Mitch: "Team Ninja displays an obsession with new-found emptiness that anchors the action, betrays fans, and repels newcomers...Under no circumstance should you ever waste your time on this self-indulgent and abysmal wreck".

Team Ninja d'oh! or IGN quality control issue? Am looking forward to seeing some more reviews. I assumed this would be a certain early purchase for me.

The appeal of the series (certainly in its new shiny 3D clobber) was always how bastard hard it was. Under that though, it was a pretty shitty game that never really seemed to be sure what it was trying to do.

NG2 was more of the same. Bastard hard to hide the fact that there wasn't much of a game underneath and certainly no plot or story you could care about. Some fantastic tits though.

The third NG? This and the next DMC will sell like shit-flavoured sandwiches, betcha.

Shitty story and plot for sure (especially the second - werewolves in Venice??) but shitty game? I can't agree with that. It had some of the most rewarding gameplay around precisely because you couldn't mash and expect to get away with it - this made it an incredibly rewarding experience for the patient gamer who mastered the moves / weapons etc. It was essentially a fighting game with some fairly light RPG / adventure elements stuck on - these were neither great nor awful, but the heart of the experience - the fighting - was insanely good.

The thought they have dumbed down the new one and turned it into a pointless mashy bloodbath with little skill :-( Such a ridiculous thing to do, such a spectacular own goal.

I loved the first one but found the second one to be quite dull and uninspiring with repetitive, boring combat.

I'll be avoiding 3 for sure.

Don't agree with the dumbing down (I think games are far too sodding easy - and let's get this straight, developers - hard does not have to mean 'frustrating and repetitive' OK?) but I never liked the fact that NG required such mastery of the combos and moves, and the weapons therein - without rewarding you very much at all. Progression, sure - but never a feeling that the 20 or so saps you just put down in fine fashion would result in an equally balanced upgrade to your skills and arsenal.

Sounds like NG3 has just gone down the 'frustration' route with even less payoff - which really does suck.

Gave up on one; couldn't do it. Ninja Dogged the sequel and really enjoyed it. Not fussed about this... rental at best.

I remember at the time I was playing the first, so many EGers gave up on it a few hours in. I was so close to doing the same and almost smashed my controller...would have had it not been an indestructibe xbox controller.

I picked it up again and it just clicked somehow. Once you got past that, and started levelling your weapons, finding scrolls and unlocking some sweet moves, it became a joy to play, albeit one that involved occasional swearing at the TV.

Think I got as far as fighting a reanimated pile of dinosaur bones (unless I dreamed this). That was it for me.

The first game is the most legitimate fighting engine in any of these third person action games, only thing that really comes close is DMC3 or God Hand.

Incidentally, IGN didn't like God Hand much, either, so I would hope that no-one else gives a fuck what they say.

Yeah, other reviews are nowhere near as negative as this, and IGN are clowns at the best of times.

As usual, wait for Edge/EG/GamesTM.

This has lit up a few warning lights for me, but I'm still going to wait for some reviews that aren't IGNlol.

Hey, the Metro gave it 4/5! Does anyone base their purchasing decisions on a free newspapers review though???

I don't pay much attention to any "professional" reviews, no matter their source.

Obligatory - the Metro gaming section is based off the Gamecentral website, and so is actually rather good. I usually take more stock in their opinions than pretty much any other website out there.

Here's their full online review of NG3.

I'm tempted to offer my review services, gratis, to The Guardian. That's probably the weakest review section I've ever seen. Practically paraphrases the back of the box.

Hey, Charlie Brooker started out there.
