I've written a piece for the Culture Vultures blog on the death of the Zombie genre if anyone's interested :)

They were looking for someone to write to the title, and I thought I'd have a pop :)

If I win the car I'm up for, I might jack all the blogging in, it wont get better than that ;)

Naw don't jack it all in, remember there's an entirely new console generation coming up. At least don't jack it in before that arrives :)

If there's anything I know about zombies, it's that they're always about to come back to life just when you least/most expect it. I think the WWZ movie will be massive tbh, so I'd expect another mini-infestation after that.

I read WWZ on holiday (twice, it's that easy a read) and I concur. If the movie captures the essence of the book it'll be huge, not merely because it's got Brad Pitt attached to it and the bits and bobs I've seen about it look and sound awesome.

So no death of the undead just yet.

BTW if the genre really is dead, then how are people still making millions of dollars out of relatively low-end zombie-related projects? Latest one I've heard is a podcast generator that randomly splices 'war of the worlds' style underground broadcasts into your music collection on your iPod / iPhone about a supposed Zombie outbreak. Took about 2 days to code and made the developer $1.5m. Crazy. I'd like a slice of that sort of 'dying genre' please.

Anyone that enjoyed WWZ should read Zombie Apocalypse by Stepehen Jones.

It's a modern take on the Zombie Apocalypse that instead of reading like a traditional novel is instead made up of collated excerpts from emails, blog posts, tweets, Facebook conversations, diary entries and the like. It all ties together brilliantly and in my opinion is on the same level as WWZ.

Sounds interesting. I still need to pick up the rest of the Max Brooks stuff, love WWZ to bits. It's the only Zombie books I've ever read that actually makes the Zombies piss-scary, like they should be.

There's only two Max Brooks books isn't there?

The Zombie Survival Guide isn't as engaging as WWZ to be honest.

I thought there was a third that was a graphic novel-style treatment of the best bits of WWZ and the ZSG. Could be wrong though.

I really hope the film isn't shit.

So you can either go for a zombie infested Manor House, a zombie infested Shopping Mall, or just get the regular zombie experience via a day trip to Milton Keynes?
