... or "I've got a hard-on for this game because..."

I've decided we need a thread where we can all salivate in anticipation of releasing coming in the (near) future.

For me, the big release of 2012 (certainly following the delay on Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider) is Borderlands 2

The original Borderlands was something of a revalation for me; coming completely out of left-field and offering something different from the usual FPS crowd. The SP game is solid and fun, with the soft-touch RPG elements and brillianr looting really adding to the whole experience.

But it's the co-op play which really took BL to another level for me - having played through the entire game and all of the DLC (except Moxxi - which doesn't count) in co-op with 3 other friends, the look, feel and humour of the game really gel with the manic gameplay resulting in a fantastic game.

It wasn't perfect - far from it - but for me, the gripes were far outshone by the game itself.

With Borderlands 2, it looks as though Gearbox have listened to their vocal fanbase to iron out some of these flaws. Even in the DLC, you can see that Gearbox were upping their game - especially on the story-telling side - and we're promised that there are further improvements of this aspect in the sequel.

The risk in this is that we'd lose the essence of what made Borderlands such a revelation, but by all accounts it's still there.

Come September - I know what I'll be playing!

I think I'll be up for a bit of this, I sunk a lot of time into the original. Pissed off with the way it ended though.

I'm still hoping Gearbox actually finish Aliens this year too.

Now that Sniper Elite is here (and I still have a hard-on for it):

Borderlands 2. Got to be my most anticipated game of the year. Adore the first and still haven't taken down Crawmerax.
Dragon's Dogma.
GTA V.
Dishonoured (despite still not looking at the trailers).
Hitman.
Deadlight.
Thief 4 (this year?)

Well, if we're listing I'm also hot for Gravity Rush and MGS Collection Vita.

Hoping that The Last of Us is also out this year, but I'm not holding my breath. Other than that; I'm still catching up with 2011 releases :)

I'm playing FF13. How far behind am I? 18 months? Hehe. Stupid XBLA keeps distracting me.

Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes
Lego Lord of the Rings

The more Lego games the merrier as far as I'm concerned. Batman 2 is the first in the series with full voice acting and you get to fly around Gotham City as Superman. The LOTR game is meant to be out in October and is the Lego I've been wanting for years!

GTA V

I'll definitely be up for this now that Rockstar have finally added mid-mission checkpoints to their open world games. Before Episodes from Liberty City I'd never finished a GTA title!

Assassin's Creed 3

I loved 2, Brotherhood and I'm playing through Revelations now. After watching the gameplay trailers I'm failing to see how this is the massive revolution (except for the setting!) in the series that Ubisoft claim it will be. Just looks like AC, but with trees you can climb as well as buildings. Definitely a bargain bin purchase (let the rest) and hopefully they have got rid of those tower defence sections.

ArmA3, I'd forgotten just how great ArmA2 was until Day Z got me to go back to it, an updated engine with more features and hopefully less bugs (and Day Z too) and we're talking something very special.

Oh and Planetside 2 and Mechwarrior Online as well, this year it's mostly going to be about PC for me, this console generation is getting old.

Forthcoming games? That list is pretty short for me...
TH HD as New York mentioned already. It can't be bad if it's a copy of TH1 and 2. Unless those games were actually not that good 10(?) years ago. :)
I don't actually know what other games a due out this year. Is Tomb Raider still on the cards for 2012? Judging by F_Ps comments it's not. That leaves me with LBP Karting, I suppose, but that's not exactly a big exciting game.

I am looking forward to playing Dark Souls and Skyrim, but only if there is a GotY edition of Skyrim this year with whatever DLC and patches they will have released by that point.

I'm also quite keen on getting my hands on SSX!

So, yeah I will be playing last years games this year, because I haven't bothered to bring my PS3 with me to Sweden. I probably played less than 10 hours since last November, not counting Minecraft.

Lollipop Chainsaw, for me.

I apologize for not matching your level of effort for the moment, though, F_P. ^^;

The new XCOM game (The proper version, not the FPS). Everything I read/see about it brings me closer and closer to needing new underwear.

Yeah I'm with Jim Jam. These days things seem to sneak up on me before I know they're out, Batman is a good example, and so too Max Payne. Kinda want that now.

GTA V goes without saying. Other than that, I'm not that excited for anything that I can think of. Bio's been pushed back to next year, right?

Borderlands was good fun but grindy, so I'm not too bothered by the sequel, especially as my multiplayer time these days is tres limited.

If Colonial Marines turns out to be as good as I want it to be then that could be worth a punt.

One thing I am noticing with myself. I'm super done with massive open world games (unless Rockstar have gone and slapped it's brand on them). I tend to take one look and then sigh. I just know I will never get through them and therefor feel it's hardly worth starting.

Bring back linear gameplay!

Bioshock is a good example. A world that FEELS completely open, but is in fact a fairly linear path from beginning to end.

More of this please.

Linear. And NO BACKTRACKING. At least no backtracking as a punishment for missing something the first time.

If you really insist on backtracking in a game, also make bloody sure you have a 'fast travel' option.

Well it is a shooter and a linear one as well.

Very good it is too and quite a challenge, my death count on the Rockstar Social Club is horrendous, just as well it's quick to recover from seeing Max having a big hole blown in his skull.

We've only just got broadband online after moving, so I'll have to hook up the 360 now and get back to Skyrim.
